Doug Jones [D] wins Senate race against Roy Moore [R] in Alabama

Quite the interesting development in American politics. I assume most people here thought it was too out-there to think this could happen.

I'll bet Trump REALLY regrets appointing Sessions to AG now.  Tomorrow morning's tweet-storm ought to be the thing of legends.

I honestly expected Moore to win, but I'm very, very happy to see Jones pull through.

Even before the recent string of allegations against him I pretty much loathed Roy Moore.

That said I find it very satisfying to know that tomorrow he will have to wake up to the realization that he lost... to a democrat... in Alabama.

That's impressive. And not a Jones is an amazing candidate impressive. It's a Moore is a truly awful person impressive considering that the lack of so many write-ins or turnout amongst Republicans in even marginally better than the low numbers would have swung things.

He won by 1.5%. Any chance they'll go for a recount or fight it some other way?

Moore was a statewide embarrassment even before we knew he was a creep and I'm thrilled that he lost.

I don't even know shit about Doug Jones. He might suck. Don't really give a shit right now.

By law, recounts are only supposed to happen if the margin is <0.5%

Since the write-ins are within the margin of victory they now have to go through and look at those, and I hope we at least see some funny candidates with a few dozen votes.

It was pretty fun watching the evening turn from "dead even race" to "Moore up by 10 points, looks predictably like he'll stay in the lead" to "holy crap Doug Jones is winning at the last minute." Did anyone see Roy Moore's speech, if you can call it that, afterwards? So uncomfortable.

Ahh, that makes sense. But even if Moore hypothetically somehow won every write-in ballot, he'd still trail Jones by 1%

NYT had Jones winning from about 30 minutes after polls closed. I was relatively unsurprised. CNN seemed like they were leaning Moore for a while, especially when he was up 7 or so points with 60ish percent of the vote in but for as long as I watched the results, NYT never dipped below like 64% that Jones would win.

Just watched it.  "God is always in control"  Damn right, bitch.

So basically, his message was 'We lost, but we're going to find every loophole we can to dispute it'.

The headline there was misleading as hell. Homosexual conduct and homosexuality are two very different things. In 2005 Moore was very likely referring to the Lawrence v. Texas decision, and while I disagree with any laws mandating moral behavior the case itself wasn't a referendum on homosexuality by any means. Moore's still a fuckstick, though.

Having said that, this guy might be the dumbest person I've ever seen in politics. The whole swearing on a bible thing was painful to watch.

Thank goodness that awful excuse for a human being lost.  With any luck, Roy Moore will disappear into nothingness, never to be heard from again.

Just think though...someone actually brought that guy through an interviewing process, and in the end said,"Yup, he's the one for the job" and ask yourself again who is the dumbest...

That guy is proof that competence means nothing in politics.  How else does one get to the level of speaking for a US senate candidate and think it's the law to be sworn in using a christian bible?

We all wish that, but you know what?

If that same match comes up in 2020 Roy Moore wins. A lot of folks who elected to stay home instead of going out for him go to the polls for the other races and end up begrudgingly pulling the lever for him. Don't know if he'll make it past primaries after losing to a Democrat, but it's certainly a possibility.

Moore loosing was the best thing that could have happened to the Republican Party.

Eh, I don't know about that. Everyone who didn't outright say he needs to step aside in the race will still have the stink of endorsing him on them, and they don't even get to keep the seat for 3 years. There's a much better chance the Senate flips now in 2018 (still not the most likely outcome, but considerably more likely).

Everyone who didn't outright say he needs to step aside in the race will still have the stink of endorsing him on them..

Maybe for a week or two. Then it will be old news.

I like to think of my self as "Conservative, not Republican" and can't honestly pinpoint one thing that would be "best for the Republican party"  - at least for my political views. But I am finding myself less and less in their wheelhouse these days so to assume they would do anything to better align with my views is foolhardy.

I'm kind of in the same boat.  I lean conservative in my personal views, but it seems that doesn't align with the Republican party at all.

That's me, too.   To a T.  I'm finding both main parties to be extremely wishy washy on key terms.  (For the record, I don't consider "social issues" to be key terms).   Less and less do I identify with the nonsense that comes out under the official "party" platforms.
