1979 was the biggest hit by Smashing Pumpkins and one of the most popular alt. rock songs from the 90's.

How would you rate it and why? Musically how much does it appeal to you?

Nothing about this band appeals to me.  Zero stars, if that option were available.

4 stars. Better than the average song, but not a great song.

1 star because there isn't a lower option. I cannot stand TSP or Billy Corgan

5 stars baby, MTV and the masses got it right with Mellon Collie album being a huge hit.  That album is a work of art and 1979 is a really awesome song.

Not the hugest Smashing Pumpkins fan overall, but I got Mellon Collie at a pawn shop for a $1.00, and I have to say, it IS a work of art.  Twenty-eight songs, with not a ton of filler, and a fair amount of musical diversity.   That's not an album that was just dashed off in eight days or whatever (and there are, I believe, about four CDs worth of outtakes and alternate versions, some WILDLY different than the album versions).   I have a CD single of Zero that is 45 minutes long (with only the title track as overlap) and a CD single of 1979 that is 15 minutes long (also with only the title track as overlap).

I get it if one doesn't like Billy's voice or whatever, but that is not a minor work.

I just YouTubed this.  Don't think I'd ever heard it before.  It was, at best, boring and, at worst, annoying.  Sounds like something that would've been really popular in the mid-90s.  2 stars.

I went with 4 - I think it's a great song and one of their finest hits but it's not in my personal top15 Pumpkins songs.

I mean just a quick look at your RYM ratings there's really nothing among your highest ratings that sounds remotely close to Pumpkins so maybe it's a taste thing? :P I think Mellon Collie is a 5/5 but it's more up my alley musically as well.

I haven't heard the album.  But I've heard plenty from the band and legit do not understand the praise for them at all.  Well, actually, I "understand" it just fine--it's all about tastes, and I just generally don't like that genre, and like that band even less than many in the genre.  More accurately, I just personally don't agree with the praise.  So I guess you and I basically agree.

To put it differently, if I had a Smashing Pumpkins collection, I'd be perfectly fine giving it to TAC and letting him leave it in a shopping cart in the middle of the highway.

I actually don't find their music to really be up my ally and I never really liked grunge. I was a kid when those hits were on the radio and I got into them because of that, with Mellon Collie being my first album from them and I loved it even though I didn't and still kind of don't "get it".  It's just a bizarre artsy album and I think THAT is why it ends up working for me. It's just not like anything else I listen to and it stuck with me after all these years.  To Forgive almost had me in tears when Billy performed it a couple weeks ago.

Yo! I used to post over at the MP forum and have been lurking here since it got shut down. Not sure why this thread got me to post, but 1) I really like the Smashing Pumpkins and have been listening to them a lot lately, and 2) my enjoyment of this song was enhanced by this Rick Beato “What Makes This Song Great” video.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GVDWSTCKgng

It’s mostly just a catchy pop song that reminds me of being a kid, but there’s also some cool production stuff going on under the hood as well. I love a good pop song with interesting production. I gave it 4 stars.

I don't know the song by title..

….youtubing….

OK, yes I've heard it. And it has to be one of the most uninteresting songs I've ever heard.
