Well this is a bit of an unexpected entry considering your previous ones - is it probably for the better? Maybe.

I don't know, it's pretty heavy and has solid riffs but it doesn't resonate too much with me on an emotional level.

This is one of the weirdest songs I've received on this roulette so far, and it's not very good.

Although it's quite proggy, it's fairly listenable actually. Even creative at times.

This is one of the weirdest songs I've received on this roulette so far, and it's actually pretty cool.

This has a bombastic, even majestic vibe to it.

Yeah this got a nice relaxed vibe, but dunno if it's any special.

At times this reminded me of Tool but better.

There's nothing very special about it, but it's enjoyable and less cheesy than expected.

For some reason expected it to be awful generic crap, and... well it's not great, but kinda good?

Interesting to see how [ARTIST] has been involved in many varied projects, and this seems promising.

It's fine, I can listen to your entry when I get it and might go ahead with the rest and post results without yours until I've given it enough time.

Also, results are done, just formatting, sorting, adding up scores, etc. So... :soon:

Parama: Exist - If or When
The counterpart to Trainy's entry, this is one of the weirdest songs I've received on this roulette so far, and it's not very good. Yeah it's not generic at all and that's always a bonus on my eyes.

However, this is not really up my alley for the most part. Sure the riffs are solid for the most part, but I don't really like the harsh vocals here - they don't annoy me or anything, but I usually associate extreme vocals with extreme emotions and I can't connect with those here, reason why I prefer them in angry music in general. Thus I prefer the calmer sections on this song, mostly between the beginning and the heavy section the middle, with those great vocal harmonies.

But then there's this boring instrumental section on the second half, I don't really care about the guitar solo here at all and it drags a lot imo. Even without that section it wouldn't appealed me a lot, though. 2.5/5

Tomislav95: Paradise Lost - Faith Divides Us-Death Unites Us
This has been a band that I think I might have listened to many times during plug sessions but never really catched my attention, and this track isn't very different. I don't know, it's pretty heavy (kinda) and has solid riffs but it doesn't resonate too much with me on an emotional level, which I guess was what the band was aiming for. It just feels like standard modern metal, in terms of structure and melodies - surely they might have had a hand in influencing that, but it's... just a solid song. Wouldn't say it's generic either, they have their sound, but it's not a very unique one. Maybe they have more interesting songs, but this one doesn't do much for me. 3/5

Evermind: John Illsley - Only Time Will Tell
So there's this guitar ballad here and... there's nothing very special about it, but it's enjoyable and less cheesy than expected. It's kind of a love song I think? Or maybe looking back on a past love - I don't care tho. I like the male / female duo, it's nice. And... that's it I guess, there's not much to say about it. 3/5

Bolsters: Anneke van Giersbergen & Arstidir - Pavane
Well this is a bit of an unexpected entry considering your previous ones - is it probably for the better? Maybe. I received an Arstidir song on my first roulette, and although I haven't revisited their self-titled much, didn't enjoy enough to ban them.

So this is a curious entry, hearing Anneke singing mostly in a capella for the most part, with some guy on the background harmonizing with her. It's a nice mood, accentuated by the strings. But I feel the song doesn't really go anywhere - seems that this is an album of covers so maybe I'm just not familiar with the original pieces? It's nice chamber folk music, yeah, and relaxing, but I feel something is missing, probably on my part. It just doesn't feel like a very memorable piece in general. 3.5/5

Kattoelox: Kings of Leon - Muchacho
I don't know where but I feel I've listened to something like this quite some times, mostly the guitars here. They're nice, yeah, but I feel I've heard this style a lot since the Twin Peaks soundtrack, and even on some unrelated records like Angels of Light's How I Loved You, which is pretty folky and kind of country. Also on lots of post-rock albums. Beyond that, it's... got some nice bass, yeah, and the occasional piano is nice, but there aren't very unique ideas here, and it ends up pretty quick before they can fully develop so... yeah, a nice relaxing track, but just that. 3.5/5

Elite: Stone Temple Pilots - Tripping on a Hole in a Paper Heart
For some reason expected it to be awful generic crap, and... well it's not great, but kinda good? I mean, it's got a lot of alternative rock and grunge here, so didn't have any hopes. But it's just a decent track, short but goes to the point, it's catchy, production sucks, riffs are ok, not very creative, some personality here, got nice grooves, yeah it's ok. 3.5/5

ariich: The River Empires - A Dimmer Lux
Interesting to see how Casey Crescenzo has been involved in many varied projects (this is the second of his I receive on the roulette so far), and this seems promising. It's a bit of an energic folky song with the acoustic guitars and violins, but kinda proggy in how it's written in terms of melodies and structure. And for some reason it feels more as a piece of a bigger whole than a strong song on its own, likely the case seeing this is part of a massive double concept album. Seems the record is pretty varied in terms of instrumentation and structure so maybe I'd have liked this song more in that context. 3.5/5

home: The Family Crest - Beneath the Brine
This is one of the reasons why I don't like elimination roulettes - sometimes one of the bottom players ends up sending a surprisingly solid track late in the game. to the song: this has a bombastic, even majestic vibe to it. The chorus is huge, with the strings, percussion and acoustic guitars reminding me of some movie soundtrack in a way, but this track has more personality and its roots in indie music rather than classical. The singer somehow reminds of the TDH guy, and even some of the melodies here are TDH-esque, but more up my alley tbh. My main complaint is that it gets a little repetitive and would have appreciated more instrumental bits. 4/5

kingshmegland: I Mother Earth - God Rocket (Into The Heart Of Las Vegas)
Oh yes, I really like this atmospheric, electronic intro. Weird guitars kick in and things become interesting the kicking into the chorus, which sounds similar to what Brand New would end up doing years later - most of the calmer sections are like that, but I'm not complaining. Then back to the heavy part, at times this reminded me of Tool but better. Very solid riffs and the calm / heavy structured in the middle works quite well.

So yeah, I don't have much more to say, great riffs, solid melodies, and the Tool influence is always welcome. 4/5

Nekov: Dave Kerzner - Hypocrites
When the first chords kicked in, and after seeing it was 8 mins and a half long, expected some boring progfest or dadrock worship. And although it's quite proggy, it's fairly listenable actually. Even creative at times. Yes, vocals have quite some 70's flavor to them, and guitars for the most part are maybe too inspired by Rush at times, but around the third min they change of tone for a far more modern sound, and the song does too. This part reminds me quite a bit of Porcupine Tree, then come some nice synths and the guitar kind of soloing in the background.

And it keeps evolving from here, only maintaining some core melodies and chord progressions. That's its biggest strength imo, and what keeps this track always interesting instead of having a more conventional structure. Although it is clearly very inspired by both modern and old prog, is the solid songwriting (this particular kind being one of my very favorites) that ends up making it stand out. +4/5

Train of Naught: öOoOoOoOoOo - Fucking Freaky Futile Freddy
I recall some of my friends going nuts over this album when it was released (even followed the controversy about its artwork) and just ignored it because I assumed it was probably black metal or too avant-garde for my taste. I might have been wrong tho!

This is one of the weirdest songs I've received on this roulette so far, and it's actually pretty cool - there's this kind of childish yet twisted playfulness. I saw it being called "what high school kids would think weird music is" and it's partially true, I mean, the vocals are kind of dumb but not out of tone, and there's this electronic organ on the background :lol. But, somehow, I like it! It's fresh, catchy and memorable, and quite fun. Took some time to grow on me but I think it was worth it. +4/5
