Crap... I knew I should've saved allegaeon for the finals :zeltar:

Oh well, a fair analysis of the album, thanks for having me around, and not kicking me out in the first round like I did to you. I had a feeling we'd click a bit since you had that streak of wins in the losers bracket of my roulette. Best of luck to the other participants!!
Haha yeah I figured you'd at least do a little better than I did in yours, and I have a feeling I'm gonna like that Allegaeon album. The Algorithm was epic.

darn, worst song of the round is still up for grabs so it's one of mine
I'm glad you realized this yourself

Yes yes! Keep those expectations low, I like not having to disappoint anyone because they've already disappointed themselves

I'll be out pretty much the entirety of tomorrow, but maybe I'll be able to churn out the #4 write-up tonight (veeeery likely not) or tomorrow night (a bit more likely).

To endure the extremely long wait compared to all the other rounds of the entire roulette, let's do an album cover guessing game:

I'm afraid it is time for the nice old man on the right of the picture to sit down as well :(

#4 TAC: Ezerath – Overture: The Heir Apparent

If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you picked up on the fact that Slice the Cake’s latest is one of my favourite albums. This album definitely feels like it is trying to be that album from time to time, only with less fluctuation between heavy death passages and atmospheric soundscapes, less diversity in vocal techniques, less punchy riffs in the breakdown sections and an overall less appealing sound. That sounds like a whole bunch of complaints, but comparing to one of my all-time favourite albums will always make music seem like shit.

The best way to describe this musically is one big string of strong tech-death craftsmanship. Unfortunately the weak point is definitely the vocalist, he could have been the extra flavor this band needed by adding a bit more diversity to the music, but instead he sounds very one-dimensional, even in the spoken word parts he sounds kind of the same. Luckily, the music is good enough to lift this up to fourth/third place. Granted, the drum sonics are kind of odd, and together with the technicality of them sound a bit predictable and robotic, you know, not organic-sounding. But let’s get on with some of the individual songs.

In reality, most songs on here have something really appealing about them, whether it is the overall preachy church-like atmosphere overwhelming “Temple of the Forsaken”, or the medieval mid-section followed by an emotionally charged guitar solo in “The Sound of Knell”, or those cool synthesized bell sounds in the chorus of “Whispers of Ruin”, some of those moments are just overshadowed by the incredibly-on-the-forefront tech-death/deathcore that has been spewed all over this record.

I don’t want to make it seem like I did not enjoy this album, because man I did for real, so let’s move on to the best song and one of the best of the whole round, “A Heart, an Eye, and a Womb”. Opening with acoustic guitars and spoken word tracks, this sounds very suspiciously close to an evil version of Slice the Cake’s “The Lantern” but quickly moves out of that section into brutal deathcore, and from deathcore into almost blackmetal-like tremolo picking, providing that great atmospheric soundscape. It is for that reason that I also love the lead guitars around the middle of “In a Gale of Inferno”, they add an extra melodic layer to the music that overtakes the brutal rhythm section that dominates this album. What I also love about these two songs is that the vocals are more complimentary to the music than on some of the songs where it sounds more like a heavy rhythm layer burying the other instruments. The way the lyrics were constructed on this particular track definitely helped in that regard. And then the medieval mid-section that I get reminded of later again with a similar one on “The Sound of Knell” moves the song back into that fast, huge sound. An incredible effort of progressive deathcore, this tune.

After one listen, I was sure you would end up on the bottom, this is a pretty hard album to get through (especially for one that’s only 46 minutes long) but the pay-off wasn’t bad. The end result is some great musicianship, with okay songwriting and an average choice of vocals, I can see this band being great with some minor adjustments, right now though it’s just good but not much more.

For the longest time I was thinking you and the fogeys were messing with me through PM, jokingly letting you send super heavy music and see how I would react to it, but the longer it went on the more I started doubting that theory. Maybe you just really like extreme music. :lol

Is Train biased towards the Dutch band? Does Cardiacs not suck as much as most seem to think they do? Has Parama's music become acceptable to the more normal DTF'ers / has Train grown to like his bad music? Find out in the next episode of Train Roulette III: The Cool Kids Edition!

Thanks you Dennis for having me. I never thought I'd make it this far.

Two songs in the Top 10!!!!!!

I'll take it.

Between this roulette and my last, there is some truth to this statement.
If anything I've trained my ears to get more used to technical deathmetal :lol

I was shooting from the hip for the last few rounds, tbh, but it forced me to really explore some things I wasn't familiar with. I sampled lots of stuff in order to find something.
The good news was that I didn't send anything that I personally didn't like or didn't enjoy. I really liked the Bloodshot Dawn, but after the writeup, I almost pulled back the Ezerath. But there are a few tunes on the Ezerath that I love. Once you mentioned that it had already been recommended to you, I figured, fuck it. I'll just go with it.

Thanks for being a great host. I had a lot of fun!

Yeah Tim, great to hear this has also expanded your tastes! If you ever want to, sometimes we hang out in the DTF plug.dj room and play eachother music. It's a bit inconvenient sometimes because timezones but it's a great way to discover music from other DTFers. When someone's in there, they post in the official thread.

And yeah those two Ezerath songs were just amazing. I'd say the top 12 are all songs I love, and approximately from #30 until the bottom of the rankings were songs I had some major gripes with but only the bottom 5 songs I had major issues with and mostly wasn't fond of. I'm still glad I got 'forced' to listen to the Ezerath album as many times as I did.

Sorry for this silly suggestion, but could you colour-code the songs so we know which songs came from what album? I don’t know any song titles, so that would help to see where everybody ended.

Hey, it might not be super heavy but I think the Semistereo album is best classified as progressive metal so still technically metal

Does that mean #1 is actually sarcasm?
This whole roulette is one big joke and you're all part of it, so it only seemed fair to turn our #1 into a meme, so that's what I'm gonna try to do

I posted the #4 yesterday ::) and if I was doing write-ups in advance I still wouldn't have put out anything because clearly I only have 2/5 done so far. I don't know, seems more fun to me to do a countdown with a bit of time between albums than to have a longer wait until the #5 and then all do them within 2-3 days, but maybe that's just because I'm not the one having to wait in suspense.

#3 and #2 are really damn close btw, working on write-ups and listens between now and about 2 hours, let's see if I can get the #3 out there before I leave for the night.

Wow, at this point you should know my album better than me :lol
I could have sent a more difficult album like On Land And In The Sea if I knew you were listening them so much. Jokes aside, it's great to read that you have listened the albums a lot and I can wait some more days.

#3 LordCost: Cardiacs - Guns

Cardiacs is one of those bands that I got scared to check out merely by the amount of comments flying around about how weird and crazy they are. Well, this album certainly explains some of that, but I expected it to be waaaay out there which is honestly isn't. This album sounds like Orbs, The Mars Volta and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard at the same time. Kind of an odd combination but it works surprisingly well. The album genuinely feels like a trip, it's psychedelic in the weirdest way, chaotic in the most inoffensive way possible, and well-structured. The male/female ratio is very well done, none overpowers the other too much, and whenever the female vocals come in there's no feeling that it is forced or out of place like the feeling I had when female vocals appeared like once on the Ezerath album.

From fast-paced rocking tunes like “There's Good Cud” and “Will Bleed Amen” to the more quirky and dancy “Wind and Rains Is Cold” (which by the way totally sounds like the Thomas the Tank Engine soundtrack), this album has a wide range of moods that it goes through pretty seemlessly, and it retains the catchiness.

Most all the songs are short and don't exceed a length where the ideas become worn out and boredom takes over. That was actually one of my biggest fear, but as it turns out this was the easiest album to get through front to back out of all of them. Now here's my problem with the album, when you build it around a bunch of short songs, they all leave a certain impression, but the impressions are stronger than with long songs that contain some good and some bad parts because one element of a song makes up a bigger portion of the song. This became worrisome on “Clean That Evil Mud Out Your Soul” and “Song of a Dead Pest”. The former just had that crazy motif throughout the beginning and the latter just didn't do anything for me, because it was so clearly a resting moment on an album packed with joyful, energetic, upbeat tracks. (More about this on one of the other two write-ups, if I'm talking about your album, you should know which track I'm talking about)

“Cry Wet Smile Dry” is an example where everything clicked. Frantic beats and vocal melodies, check. Euphoric slightly louder chorus, check. Over before overstaying its welcome, check. On the other hand, the track you seem to like the most, “Jitterbug (junior is a )” was great, especially those subtle guitar licks on the background. But opposed to my aforementioned favourite of the album, this one didn't have as much staying power because of its longer runtime. The psychedelic quiet section was still great, but it's not a song I'd return to anytime I feel a certain way, which “Cry Wet Smile Dry” on the other hand definitely is. “Sleep All Eyes Open” is another example where everything just worked for me, and it also turned out to be one of my favourites on the album, but it didn't quite match the best. The instruments add a nice punch to some of the vocal lines to give it a more in-your-face rock vibe.

Overall, this was the nicest surprise, since it was the only one along with Ezerath that I had any real preconceived thoughts about the band, and this one got me in a complete 180, excited to check out their other work. Despite some moments where I thought they overdid the whole theatrics/showroom vibe, this was a great listen and probably a solid 4/5 album.

I would have never guessed Cry Wet Smile Dry as your favourite even after you told me that your best was in the middle of my personal ranking. It's one of the least special talking about songwriting, but I still enjoy it a lot. One night at 1.30 AM I woke up my entire family trying to hit the highest note of the chorus  :lol. That one and Sleep All Eyes Open are the closest pair of songs on the album to me and it makes sense that are both your favourites.
I take Jitterbug as my favourite because it's a unique track and I don't know how such a thing has been conceived, but it works.

4 songs in the top 12 is well above my initial expectations, maybe Clammy Lammy and Spell With A Shell will rise the ranking in the future because they are both amazing (Song of a Dead Pest is another one I love, but I get you can be indifferent about it).

It was really a fun roulette, the singing parts registered by yourself in one of the first rounds were cool despite noone has guessed anything and the suspence was high for every elimination (Gentle Giant vs Rush in particular for me). Fogey jokes deserve a special mention too  :lol
