Two hip-hop fans react to DT's "Metropolis Pt. 1"
« on: November 21, 2017, 11:16:21 AM »
There guys are really funny!  I've watched their Megadeth and Metallica videos.  Just noticed that they posted a Dream Theater video today...

I thought their observations were pretty solid. MP1 is heavy on the wankery. Shame they didn't go with LtL.

What amused me most was watching them bob their heads to the beat, and then slowly losing it when they'd extend or shorten a bar a little bit, and then by the middle stopped altogether. Happens every. single. time. someone first listens to a DT song  :lol

Yeah, that was funny.  Loved these guys.  It's very interesting to see peoples reaction to DT.  Nice to see that they said DT are very good musicians and very technical.  Certainly, it's difficult for someone to get the musicality of the song on the first listen.  I'm going to watch their other reviews now . .  .

These guys I can't watch because they pause the video, everytime they comment.

I haven't seen the video yet, but these guys are very cool.  Watching them talk about Master of Puppets or Holy Wars was like hearing the song for the first time all over again.  It's great that these guys are open-minded enough to try different genres, especially something as tricky as Metropolis.   However, that's not really a good DT entry level song.  I'd have recommended Pull Me Under or As I Am, which are more straight-forward songs with less wankery.  Even something like Endless Sacrifice or Sacrificed Songs, both of which build quite nicely before exploding in the the instrumental parts.  But Metropolis is truly hard to get a grasp on, especially upon a first listen.

In my early stages of DT love I was immediately in awe with Metropolis. The absolutely mindblowing verses and vocal lines and delivery were enough to hook me up and not put me off during the instrumental section, which is still very melodic and never drifts off the mood of the song, I think I could hum along my way through it all, something I can't definitively say for recent solo sections.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

The Lost in Vegas channel is great.  Discovered it recently when they released their Holy Wars reaction, and I've been cheerleading for Metropolis review since.  Glad they gave it a listen.

Love how these guys are so opened minded. They could easily have torn this apart.
Funny how they chuckle at the keyboard sound. I was waiting for their reaction to when James starts to sing, but nothing.
My favorite is the Warpigs video. They really appreciate that one. Goes to show how early Sabbath were pioneers and deserve all the praise they get.

11:55 - where's the saxophone at? Where's Kenny G with the saxophone? :lol

That's a different song, but it's right there on the album. Although it's not Kenny G. I believe the guy who plays it is Jay Beckenstein? From Spyro Gyra?

Do you any of you know of reaction videos of Metalheads breaking down Hip/Hip songs like these two are doing for Metal? I'm quite curious, based on my experience that Metalheads are more prone to brush off any other genre of music.

I explored a little bit of their page, they react to various genres, including country and R&B.

Their Gojira video is awesome! They really enjoy great drumming

I had just found about these guys a few weeks before this thread was posted! Small world. I don't think Metropolis was really the best song for them to react to, as it's a tough pill to swallow, but the video was great. That battle of the bands comment was spot on :lol

My favorite reaction video so far is the Meshuggah - Bleed one. It's hilarious how much it catches them off guard when the song starts.

Their reaction to the opening of As I Am is hilarious when they rant at the fans for Metropolis Pt. 1 being the recommended 1st DT song.  They then said they enjoyed the opening to AIA more than all of Metropolis.

Just watched. This is the song (or PMU) they should have started with in the first place. Now I think they should do PMU, Peruvian Skies, Panic Attack, Lie, 6:00, Breaking All Illusions, Enemy Inside.

Those guys are cool!  I'm glad they liked AIA and they are pretty insightful for it being their first listen. They are probably pretty accurate about Metropolis 1 from the viewpoint of the average listener. It's alot to take in if your not used to progressive metal.

Yes, totally agree with everything you said. The guys are really genuine. And Metropolis Pt1 for a non-DT listener is way too much to digest.
