Interesting. I'm gonna have to go back and listen to it at some point. Been a very, very long time since I've willingly sat through it start to finish. I never listen to SoC - I remember two sections of it but that's it...
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Everyone always says ToT is heavy when there's like three heavy tracks on there. The rest is either ballad/powerballad stuff or plodding midtempo stuff

Come on, ToT is a completely unbalanced album.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

I would actually prefer it if ToT was metal 100% the way through, like the first two tracks. It'd be the Kill Em All of Dream Theater records
Jordan took Moore's boring, pedestrian parts and elevated them considerably to take them from barely palatable to stellar.

But, seriously, why rank it so low? I just had a long walk home listening to DT on shuffle mode. BAI came in and, man, that song is as good as it can get. The rest of the album is amazing too.

Ranked the albums in tiers, but listed them chronologically after that, because it's not really fair to ask me which is better or worse in a particular tier. Note that the bottom tier is not BAD albums, I just have particular things I tend not to like about them, which keeps them from being enjoyed all the way through.

Perfect Albums
Images and Words
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Octavarium

Solid-All-the-Way-Through Albums
When Dream and Day Unite
Scenes From a Memory
Train of Thought
Dream Theater

Good-but-not-great Albums
Awake
Falling Into Infinity
Systematic Chaos

Bottom Tier Albums
Black Clouds and Silver Linings
A Dramatic Turn of Events
The Astonishing

My thoughts on why someone would put ADTOE so low (like I did) is the inconsistency. While it does have some of their best material (Bridges, Outcry, Beneath the Surface...), it also has some of the worst stuff they ever wrote (BMUBMD, Lost Not Forgotten...) Also, I've never been a huge fan of BAI (it's not bad, but the way people drool over it around here is, IMO, cringe-worthy - it's got a serious case of "longest song on the album syndrome").
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

I'm in the "they ripped off Images and Words" camp. Bridges and Breaking All Illusions are the only two I really go back to anymore. I can forgive BAI for being LtL part 2 because it's still a great song. This is the Life is pretty good too. The rest of the album is just boring re-treads of better songs and songs that just kinda suck.

I agree on the fact that some structures/arrangements are very similar between the two, but that doesn't prevent me form ejoying the album, which, once you forget about it being "IAW 2", is quite amazing and has some incredible moments from all the 5 members of the band  :metal

But it's fine that you dislike it, it just surprised me because it's the one out of the MM era albums that most people tend to prefer.

... actually, I might just listen to it later tonight

I'll never understand how Y sounding like X is a barrier to one's enjoyment of Y. By that mark, you're not allowed to enjoy any songs with the standard verse-chorus structure except the first one ever to have that. It's ridiculous! Stop putting all these restrictions on your taste, and it will become a ton healthier as a result.

You do realise that like, 90% of DT's songs are only slight variations on the standard verse-chorus structure, right?

It's not about just sounding the same. OTBOA and LNF are literally stretched out versions of PMU and UAGM. Metallica's One and Fade to Black share the same structure but are completely different songs. Same with Endless Sacrifice and Sacrificed Sons. Lost Not Forgotten is Under a Glass Moon. Finkle is Einhorn.

After listening to these albums for the first time in awhile I want to make some changes.
1. Scenes From A Memory
2. Awake
3. 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance
4. Octavarium
5. A Dramatic Turn of Events

9. The Astonishing
10. Train of Thought
11. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
12. Systematic Chaos
13. When Dream and Day Unite

The Astonishing was much better than I remember, but that they may have been a result of trimming it down to 20 songs. BC&SL has not aged well for me and makes me even more happy that MP left because his fingerprint is all over BC&SL and SC.

6. Falling
7. Systematic
8. WDADU

10. Train of Thought
11. When Dream and Day Unite
12. The Astonishing
13. Systematic Chaos

This is all from personal preference. I am not going to sit here and dissect each track from each song and say how each album flows or doesn't flow. But I will say this.

As DT is my favorite band, you'll notice that from I&W through SFAM the releases were totally unique from the others and that's what, in my mind, used to set apart DT for other bands (regardless of genre). It was also a mark of an incredible band. To be that diverse and yet that good was unparalleled.

In addition, each album has strong tracks. Although Systematic Chaos is my least favorite from the band, I really dig the song, The Dark Eternal Night.

Hello, DTF.  :)  Longtime lurker here, finally decided to make an account. This seems like the right thread for my first post.

1. Awake
2. Images and Words
3. Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
5. Falling into Infinity
6. Octavarium
7. Train of Thought
8. When Dream and Day Unite
9. Systematic Chaos
10. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
11. A Dramatic Turn of Events
12. The Astonishing
13. Dream Theater

9-12 are all different kinds of average, so they're pretty close. If you want to argue that BC&SL is "better" than SC I wouldn't necessarily disagree, but SC is more enjoyable. ADTOE loses to both on account of the flat production.

First and second, as well as fifth and sixth, switch places from time to time. But right now it'd be:
1. Images and Words
2. Awake
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
4. Scenes from A Memory
5. A Dramatic Turn of Events
6. Octavarium
7. Falling into Infinity
8. Train of Thought
9. The Astonishing
10. Dream Theater
11. Systematic Chaos
12. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
13. When Dream and Day Unite

And let's rank live videos just for the hell of it:
1. Score
2. Live in Tokyo
3. Live in Budokan
4. Metropolis 2000
5. Breaking the Fourth Wall
6. Live at Luna Park
7. Five Years in a LIVEtime
8. Chaos in Motion

The "meh-ok" ones:

The bad-i-don't-even-bother-to-listen-again ones:

DT12, The Astonishing, When Dream And Day Unite, Live At Luna Park, Breaking The Fourth Wall
