I never much got into his music other than the Wildflowers album in the 90s.. but I can appreciate that he touched a lot of peoples lives through his music.  Sad day.

One source saying he was taken off life support.  Conflicting info right now.

I too heard he was taken off life support. Terrible news either way. His music was one of the first I remeber hearing growing up, my parents were huge fans. I became a huge fan when I got older and saw him multiple times.

Didn't love his music, but cannot say I ever heard anyone say anything bad about him either as an artist or a person. Damone and Stacy need to have a quick reunion fuck in his honor.

Older Heartbreakers stuff was good, LOVE the song "Mary Jane's Last Dance", and like the Mudcrutch stuff.  He lost me when he became hip (i.e. worked with Jeff Lynne and became the darling of Rolling Stone).  I got to see him twice, though and both times were rockin' affairs (one was the "Strange Behavior" tour in '89, and one was the "Dogs With Wings" tour in '95).  I thought it was a rip, though, that he and the Heartbreakers were in the RnRHoF in what, their second year of eligibility when other, more deserving acts were still out.  I know for me growing up in the late 70's, early 80's, he was a minor artist, relatively speaking.

Sad to see him go, though, at 66.  By all accounts the new tour was going well.

This is one death that genuinely came out of left field for me, he was in such a good form. RIP Tom, as MP said, today everyone's heartbroken.

He had the ability to write simple but good, catchy songs. Many of which are timeless. My personal favorite is "Refugee." He will be missed.

Prayers and condolences to his family, bandmates, and friends.

RIP

I was never a huge fan, but I used to play in a band that covered Mary Jane and always had a great time playing the tune. I did like a lot of his hits, and always had a lot of respect for him. To be able to touch so many people for such a long time in the music business says a lot about what he meant to them.

He just hit his last number, and walked to the road...

Sad sad day

I didn't really listen to his music. But he does have some great songs. Mary Janes Last Dance and Running Down The Dream are my faves.

Refugee is one of my all-time favorite songs, that Hammond is so tasty. Oh, I highly recommend Dave Grohl's movie Sound City. Besides being amazing overall, it also has lots of great and hilarious interview bits with Tom Petty.

Big fan of his music. As a teenager his music spoke to me and all of my friends. We were into Metal and Prog, but Petty got a free-pass as far as music was concerned. His music was cool, and excellent. I've seen him 4 times; the last just this summer. It was a very long and powerful concert. Several times he stoppd the show and became emotional expressing his sincere gratitude to the audience. My wife and I both felt that somehow he knew this would be the last tour. Like he knew something we all didn't. It wasn't until about a month ago that I learned he was not wanting to tour anymore really. I read a quote that said, "I don't want to be on the road the rest of my life."

What irony that they just wrapped up the tour a week ago today?!?!

I never met him, but did meet Mike Campbell on the last tour. We had box seats that were up front but along the side of the arena. The hallway right next to our seats was heavily guarded by security. Joe Walsh opened for them, and during his set, Mike popped out of the tunnel and stood next to me watching Joe. My wife nudged me to get my attention, and I looked over and said, "Youre Mike Campbell!" He was very cool and shook our hands and said hello to a bunch of people right next to us. We all watched Joe solo for a few minutes then he turned and said, "He's amazing isn't he? I gotta run, but it was nice to meet you all."  Very cool.

This one was a punch to the gut. I'm 54 fucking years old. I guess those nearly daily reminders of my own mortality will not abate from here on in. I also heard he's not gone yet, but that he's been removed from life support with no brain activity.

RIP. Thank you Tom Petty for the music and having a part in the songbook of my life.

I think what he means is that maybe Tom Petty had not his last dance with Mary Jane quite yet...

Okay, bad jokes aside, I have always liked Tom Petty's music.  Not a huge fan, but I like him.  Wildflowers is the one CD of his that really stands out, and I like a lot of his other hits.  Breakdown and Don't Come Around Here No More are killer tunes.  And the video for You Got Lucky was one of my favorites back when we first had MTV back in '82.  Good songwriter who will be missed (when his time comes).

Alright, officially dead now. We can all stop dancing around etiquette and terminology. While I'm sorry to hear about the death of a guy who seemed pretty cool, the back and forth about whether or not he was dead was pretty interesting.

Pretty shite news to wake up too.

I only really got into Tom Petty music in the last few years (shame on me).  I've loved discovering his back catalog, truly great songwriter and by all accounts one of the good guys.

It's sad. He was a legend. I was never into Petty, but I know people that stood by his live show as great. He had my respect as an artist for sure. Refugee is one of the all time classic rock songs.

I made a greatest hits that's like 60 songs on my iPod that I've been playing while flying today. You really get to listen to some of the nuances when you're by yourself. It's nice.
