Finished 13 Reasons Why's second season. Weaker than the first, I'd suggest it only for hardcore fans who are really invested in the fate of some characters.

Started American Gods' second season, I hope it will be good - the first one was OK but, even if I can't properly pinpoint why, it just didn't translate the sheer magic and atmosphere of the book unto the screen.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

"When they see us" on Netflix. About the Central Park Five.
Watched the whole series over the weekend. It was frustrating, infuriating, inspiring, brings out all the "ings".

It was really good.

If any of y'all are looking for a new series to watch over the summer, I've compiled a little recommendation list. I've personally seen all of the shows on here except for the first two, so I can vouch that they're all quality stuff.

I Want to Watch...

...something casual and funny:

* The Office (a lot of seasons)
* Brooklyn Nine Nine [ongoing] (a lot of seasons)
* Phineas and Ferb (4 seasons)
* Dragon Ball Z Abridged [ongoing, slow to update] (60 ~10-20min episodes; first like 10 episodes are kinda eh, but trust me it gets good. Funniest show I've ever seen)
* One Punch Man [ongoing] (2+ seasons; main character is so over the top powerful that it circles right back around to hilarious)

...an action-packed thrill ride:

* Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (1  Season; a show about humanity being trapped underground, and a small group of people piloting giant robots to reclaim their world from beast men. 2 seasons. The most hot-blooded and action packed thing to ever exist)
* My Hero Academia [ongoing] (3+ Seasons, new season airing soon; almost everyone in the world has super powers)
* Cowboy Bebop (1 season; jazzy space opera. Watch the English dub.)
* Shakugan no Shana (3 Seasons; ordinary high school student finds out that he's actually dead then teams up with a flame sprite to fight soul-eating monsters. Extremely influential)
* Baccano! (1 Season; "So, a crazy murder cult, a band of robbers, a gang of crazed mafioso, a serial killer, and a bunch of immortal dudes all get on a train..." also, it's told out of order. Fantastic. Watch the English dub.)

...something that starts out casual and funny, but then it hits you in the face:

* Steins;Gate (2 Seasons; first half is a quirky comedy about a bunch of losers accidentally inventing a time machine, second half and second season are non-stop time travel thrillers/train to feelsville)
* Assassination Classroom (2 Seasons; Season 1 and first part of Season 2: Hilarious with a weird premise about an ultra-fast octopus man destroying the moon and threatening to destroy the earth in a year unless a bunch of high schoolers can kill him, Season 2 Part 2: Edge of your seat, Last 2 Episodes: All the tears. Watch the English dub.)
* Gravity Falls (2 Seasons; first half is an above average Disney cartoon about two kids investigating the paranormal at summer camp, second half is a crazy sci-fi thriller)
* Selfie (1 Season; unfortunately cancelled. Criminally underrated show about a guy having to teach a self-obsessed influencer social skills and empathy)
* Princess Tutu (1 Season; a duckling gets turned into a magical ballerina. Goes completely off the rails in the best way towards the end)

...something dramatic, even if it has a slow start:

* Person of Interest (5 seasons; first two seasons are an above average procedural drama with a super intelligent NSA-esque AI, the last three seasons go from 0 to Mach 20 in a heartbeat and are the best seasons on TV)
* Agents of Shield [ongoing] (6+ seasons; first season is unanimously agreed to be meh, second season is okay, third and sixth seasons are good, and the fourth and fifth seasons are incredible)
* Clannad + Clannad After Story (2 seasons; first season is an above average high school romance anime, second is pretty much "the first 10 minutes of Up!: the series")

...something that's dramatic right from the get-go:

* The Netflix Marvel Series (especially Daredevil; about 2-3 seasons each)
* Attack on Titan [ongoing] (3+ seasons; humanity is forced to live out their existence in a giant walled city that's surrounded by giant man-eating titans)
* Breaking Bad (5 seasons; a mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher starts a drug empire)
* Broadchurch [UK version] (2 seasons; a small town investigates and recovers from the murder of a child)
* Code Geass (2 seasons; basically the political scheming of House of Cards/Game of Thrones mixed with giant robots mixed with a dystopian teen novel)
* Death Note (1 season; a super intelligent, low-key kinda sociopathic, idealistic high school student finds a magic notebook that can kill anyone. Basically a detective thriller)

...something that's a good balance of drama and comedy:

* Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (1 season, ~55 episodes; two brothers try and fail to bring their mother back to life using alchemy, and then spend the rest of the series trying to find information about a magic artifact that has the power to bring the dead back to life. The #1 anime on MyAnimeList for like a decade)
* Avatar: The Last Air Bender (3 seasons; The Legend of Korra is optional)
* Scrubs (8 seasons; a medical dramedy, perfectly balances hilarious witty comedy and gut-wrenching drama. Skip the last season)
* Stranger Things [ongoing] (2+ seasons, new season airing soon; 80s nostalgia bomb about a bunch of kids discovering an alternate reality and a psychic girl)

...something that will absolutely traumatize me:

* Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion (1 season and a movie; starts out as a mecha anime. Goes full depression (with a side of cosmic horror). The movie is an alternate ending, which bumps the psychological and cosmic horror elements to beyond even David Lynch levels. Also has a 4 movie retelling of the series called Rebuild of Evangelion which diverges a bit, but is still great)
* Puella Magi Madoka Magica (13 episodes; a cutesy show about a cat that gives little girls magic powers. 3 episodes in, and it completely goes off the rails)
* Serial Experiments Lain (13 episodes; 90s anime about the internet and technology, and that's literally all I can tell you. Literally cannot be described. Fantastic, but drenched in symbolism and not a light watch. Has aged extremely well)

Hopefully this helps

I haven't watched many shows over the last few months (really only Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, MacGyver, Law & Order SVU and Gotham), but some others are picking back up now:

Agents of Shield
Fear the Walking Dead
Nos4a2 (new on AMC)
Chernobyl (wrapping up tonight)
Ash Vs. Evil Dead (need to finish Season 2 and 3).
Designated Survivor (Season 3 comes out Friday on Netflix)

Great post Ninjabait! Breaking Bad has five seasons however  :D

Since I want to wash my mouth of the clusterfuck that Game of Thrones' final season was, which are some shows praised for their great writing? I understand that The Wire and Sons of Anarchy are highly rated through and through, any other series like Breaking Bad whose general consensus is "basically a masterpiece from beginning to end"?

Oops. Fixed it. Thanks for pointing that out.

And for your question. From what I've listed (although all of them will work):

Person of Interest has decently written first two seasons, but they do follow a typical "case of the week" format for the most part. The last three seasons are incredibly well written however, and there is not a wasted moment. Super serialized. It has several episodes with ratings above 9.5, and the average is well in the 9s. Very satisfying ending.

Broadchurch [UK] is short by Western TV standards, but it kept me on the edge of my seat consistently throughout both seasons. The finale for Season 1 has a 9.1/10 on IMDb, and most episodes are in the high 8s.

Attack on Titan is currently ongoing, but this current season has continuously topped itself and has been consistently praised for its storytelling, character, and writing. A lot of 9s, and it currently holds the slot for "highest rated episode on IMDb".

Gravity Falls is a slow burn, but the first season is littered with clues that make rewatching it more fun. One of its episodes was the second highest rated episode of all time, just beyond Breaking Bad's Ozymandias. Extremely well written.

Steins;Gate (watch both the original season and Steins;Gate 0) is also well known for its great writing, storytelling, and characters. Every officially released episode in season 2 has at least an 8 on IMDb, there are several 9s in both seasons, and it averages somewhere in the high 8s.

Avatar the Last Airbender is...Avatar the Last Airbender. I'm just gonna assume you've seen it.

FMA: Brotherhood has a shaky first episode, but it is almost unanimously agreed to be the "best starter anime" and it's writing, characters, and story are all iconic.

Death Note is also a fantastic series that has been consistently praised for its writing, intriguing twists, and characters.

Scrubs is weird because it's a comedy/drama, but it does have several episodes with 9/10 or more on IMDb and gets surprisingly profound. If you wan't to watch something lighter with great writing (comedic and otherwise), this would be good.

And that last category is...something else. They're the kinds of shows you THINK you're ready to watch, but you're actually never ready to watch.

So just pick one that fits what you want to watch best lol.

Just started randomly watching House of Lies on Amazon Prime. It's a Showtime show but Amazon has the whole series for Prime members. Really enjoying it.

I have so much on my to-do list it isn't even funny. Trying to get to everything is crazy.

Thanks for the suggestions Ninjabait!  :tup

Oh, and since we're throwing out suggestions, I strongly reccomend the funny and incredibily clever The Good Place. You start it for fun, to enjoy the whimsical afterlife the protagonist is in, and by the end of the first season you suddenly realize the author is a genius.

Prof Peart, now I understand why you said you were rewatching the first season (and possibly the others). It's so incredibly satisfying to go through it again knowing how the story develops further!

Knocked out season 2 of Fleabag on Amazon last night. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is just an awesome writer and that show was so good. Sad that she ended it.

It's incredibly hard for me to watch multiple shows at once, but I recently watched all 4 seasons of Better Call Saul. Amazing stuff.

I'm also watching Six Feet Under with my fiancée, who has never seen it before.

On my own, I started The Americans. Getting close to finishing the first season. Love it so far.

The Americans is a great show and some of the opening show deaths on six feet under were really funny especially the porn doll balloons and the lady thinking the rapture had come.

I am currently watching the Salem series on amazon

Nice one! for some years it was my companion in October / November alongside Penny Dreadful, dark shows for the dark time of the year. While Penny Dreadful's writing was superior, Salem was quite enjoyable and especially the first season is quite strong.

I just finished that atrocious abomination that is American Gods' second season and I'm planning to start Chernobyl.

Penny Dreadful had Eva Green in a charismatic and memorable role, where her acting skill shone brighter than a thousand suns. I spent all time admiring her acting skill that I didn't even notice how drop dead gorgeous and hot she was. I really admire her since I've seen her in PD.

Agreed, she was absolutely fabulous on this and she was above all of the other "heavy-hitters" in the cast. Quite beautiful too!!

Designated Survivor (Season 3 comes out Friday on Netflix)

I never followed this show, but my wife picked up on it at some point.  She got me started on it last night, and we marathon'd 5 or 6 episodes.  I'm really liking it.

It's fantastic and Keifer Sutherland is always good, no matter what he does.  I love the idea - the 20-somethingth in line for the succession of the presidency gets thrust into office, navigating everything in that role, plus trying to heal the nation.

Since season 3 is a Netflix original, they were able to include some more mature themes and the occasional vulgarity that network TV doesn't allow.  They kept it within the realm of the show though, so it's not all of a sudden out of place.

I dropped NOS4A2...the first episode was boring as hell and explained nothing.  The second episode wouldn't play on my DVR and I had no interest in going to the AMC app and watching it anyways.

I watched S1 and the first few episodes of S2, but then got sidetracked.  I really want to get back to it, but have a few others in line ahead of it - Travellers and Colony specifically.  I love when shows go from the traditional networks to Netflix.  The themes and occasional curse bring an added and subtle depth of realism.

Binged Dark season 2 like a madman. Worth it though, excellent series, watched season one over the last two weeks. I really love the concept of this show, seeing characters throughout different points in their life is really well done. And I just love these mystery type of series.

This is apparantly a trilogy series as planned, so thus far the plot is tight and supposedly they are now filming the final season. Really looking forward to it.

I do think season 1 had better cinematography, I recall many great shots that season, this season looks good and seemingly has a bigger budget though.

I love that Netflix is getting these non-American productions that are excellent and feel like top notch productions. Kingdom and this in particular.

I also watched Umbrella Academy and really enjoyed it.

Trying something with my streaming. Picking a 30 minute-ish comedy and an hour long-ish show. I just did that with Dead To Me and season 3 of Jessica Jones and I liked it.

So yesterday I started The United States of Tara on Hulu. My hour long show will be Hanna on Amazon.

I have so much I want to watch and I like how this setup worked. Based on my mood, I can either go comedy or more serious and have just 2 shows to choose from so I can push through these.

Watched the first three episodes of ‘Barry’ last night. Man, it’s pretty good...wasn’t planning on picking a new series up yet but it looks like I just did.

I'm watching Deadwood  :hat
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Krypton
Swamp Thing (DC, cancelled after only one episode aired, probably the best of the 'DC' comics shows out there)
Starting season 3 of Legion.

Way behind on Sabrina season 2 and Jessica Jones season 3....
