I love Nick; I can only take so much of Schmidt (though he's funny with his taking the politician).

With time it became the opposite. I find Nick unbeearable and I can hardly put him with him and his manchild antics. I can't really put it down, I watched the first 5 seasons in a relative row, then forgot about it for at least a year, came back for season 6 and dunno, it was hard to get through it, and Nick certainly didn't help. Jess is always great of course.

BTW, I started something that was on my watchlist since quite a while, Broadchurch. The Tenth Doctor and Queen Elizabeth II trying to solve a crime on a small sea town with huge cliffs. First two episodes are quite interesting!

Zooey Deschanel reminds me of Tea Leoni in a way.  When Tea Leoni was coming to prominence in the mid-90s, she was pumped up so much for her looks and abilities as both a comic and dramatic actress, but she never really found a good vehicle and kinda dropped off the radar in the new millennium (until Madam Secretary).  Zooey Deschanel has done more and more diverse stuff, but she's never had anything that had mainstream success (other than New Girl if you consider that as such).

The problem with that approach is that it's so subjective.   I had to really think about your comparison, because my knee-jerk reaction was "they're NOTHING alike" and I realized that there are a lot of similarities, and it's only because I really like Zooey (I actually have one of her CDs that I got by accident and it's not as bad as it should be) and on her best day I can take or leave Tea Leoni (I think she's pretty in an... odd sort of way) and on her worst I'm willing to actively ignore her (Madam Secretary is unwatchable to me).  I know seller's got to market, but I'm always fascinated when that extends to actors themselves and not the work they do.  The idea of a "vehicle" in that way is sort of... off-putting.

(There are others too; you can tell who's agent is really hustling, or who charmed a studio executive, because they bounce from show to show to see if something sticks.  Zoe Lister-Jones was that person for a while.)

What Zooey CD do you have, Stadler? The first one I found (and still my favorite) is She & Him's second album simply called Vol. II. I absolutely love the sound of it, although it might be all I ever need of that style of music.

I have "Classics", classic songs covered with an orchestra.  Just writing that makes me cringe, but it's pretty good.  As I said, "better than it should be".

I'm currently rewatching Babylon Berlin, this time with my wife, and this time with the dubs on instead of subtitles.
The dubs are horrible but my wife's eye sight makes the subtitles problematic.

I watched the entire series and overall enjoyed it. Some of it was a struggle to get through because parts of the plot were a little hokey, but I stuck with it because I like the atmosphere and background of it from an historical perspective. Besides which I think the female lead is a real stunner.

It's pretty awesome, a detective story with a political background along with a beautifully detailed look into the late 20's.
I compare it to Boardwalk Empire, just cause they present the same era. And Babylon Berlin wins, with only two seasons in.
Netflix splits the first season into two btw, shouldn't matter to your viewing experience but the first story takes up the first two seasons on Netflix and then the 2nd is an entirely different story but with the same core characters.

I initially watched the first season of Babylon Berlin in English but then switched to German. I’m just not a fan of overdubs in general.

If you enjoyed Babylon Berlin on Netflix, I’d also recommend Road to Calvary, a Russian drama that takes place around the revolution.

Very intrigued by the descriptions of the show, added Babylon Berlin to my list. Never been bothered by subtitles, I always prefer that to dubs. Dubs never get the tone of the acting right IMO.

Dubs never get the tone of the acting right IMO.

Dubs has inevitably to chase the original language. I'm italian, we generally suck at english and we generally have a lot great actors and also voice actors, so growing up seeing dubbed movies was the normal thing for me and everyone else. It's still the normality in cinema, we see everything dubbed, I wouldn't even know where to start to look for movie theaters that play movies in original language, they do exist but I never see them advertised.

Once I was fluent enough to understand english movies, I did the switch and basically there was no turning back. Sure, the actual performance of an actor impersonating another can be good, we have many actors very good at that, but there's no performance good enough that can replace the fact that a dubbing has to chase and work around the original language and line, thus ruining all its charm. Different languages, different grammar rules, different ways to construct the sentence, and that weighs down a lot in a dub.

For example, in the english language you say "All I want is you", but in italian we don't say that. The way we phrase it can be literally translated back into "I don't want anything else than you". Every language has different grammar and so a dubbing never compares to the original.

Also, jokes get completely lost. Think of the Hodor thing in Game of Thrones. I remember the first time that I laughed a lot on How I Met your Mother, and decided to stick with it, was when the protagonist was trying clumsily to dump a girl and was saying that the situation was "ineffable", with the girl asking back "so, I'm not F-able?".... how do you even start to translate that???

Also, thank the gods for having watched Breaking Bad in the original language. Dou remember the iconic "I am the one the knocks" line? I shit you not, in italian for whatever reason it became "a guy open the door and gets shot and you think that's me? no, they cannot shoot me". Ouch.

And since I'm on a rant, let me recoil in horror at the idea of the Futurama episode of the were-car. You know how it was translated? "the car that was". Because they didn't get that were-car was a play on werewolf, they took it as the past tense of the verb be.  :hefdaddy

New season of 'ALONE' has dropped on History channel. The boys and I love the show. It's just fascinating. This seasons different though......if any contestant makes it 100 days in the Arctic they win $1 million bucks. Pretty safe bet by History channel considering in the previous 6 seasons no one has made it 100 days in more hospitable environments. I think the longest was 93 days by the winner in Patagonia.

The Last Kingdom - season 3

Will watch the season finale tonight. Hated Skade, probably the worst character on the show so far. Horribly miscast, bad writing, terrible dialogue, served as nothing but a basic plot device. Really disappointed actually. Season 2 had much better antagonists.

Hey MirrorMask, is Rocco famous in Italy? Like outside of the porn circles?
I know it seems out of context but I was just watching a documentary about him on Netflix before I saw your post about being Italian :lol

Yeah, I'd say he's quite famous. Definitively and by far the most famous porn male actor in Italy, if not THE only one. Case in point, I immediately realized who you were talking about and you didn't even have to write the surname. Nobody of his male coworkers has even a fragment of his mainstream fame. It's not that he's an A-list celebrity that gets hounded down by hordes of paparazzis and screaming fans, but he's definitively one of those persons that "everyone" kinda know who he is.

My current lineup:
- One episode to go and then I'm done forever with New Girl
- Started yesterday season 2 of Dark. Mindfucks all around!
- Season 2 of BoJack Horseman
- Season 5 of Brooklyn 99, amazing as ever
- Dead to Me (a bit weird but I want to see where it's going)
- Finished Broadchurch season 1, quite good and atmospheric, it's just that the resolution felt a bit hollow, with no forewarning

Finished season 4 of The Last Kingdom. I think this might be my least favorite season of them all? I lost interest about halfway through. Not into the characters or the contrived plots this go around. Not much focus on the Danes this season. Oh well. Season 2 was my favorite, 3 was pretty good towards the end too. Hope whenever it comes back for season 5 that it's a bit more interesting.

I watched the first half of the first episode of Space Force last night.  It failed to earn another 20 minutes of my time for me to finish the episode.  So phenomenally dumb.

Also, Lisa Kudrow is not looking great these days.

Just started Silicon Valley.  A few episodes into Season 1 and this is good.

Oh boy you're in for a ride  :metal the first season especially is tome one of the funniest and most clever series of comedy TV, period.

Season 1 was great, and Season 2 was really good as well, but a few episodes into Season 3, I can already see the decline happening.  And several co-workers are basically like, "Yeah, you've seen the best stuff already." Bummer, as I was hoping for a longer peak than this.

KINGDOM on Netflix (not to be confused with The Last Kingdom)   It's Game of Thrones meets The Walking Dead. Set in China/Japan back several hundred years......after messing with resurrection of the recently deceased for military purposes......the 'Kingdom' is faced with 'monsters' or 'zombies' that are blood thirsty. They're the '28 days' version of zombies also.....quick and relentless.

Then add a bunch of political stuff to it and it's a pretty cool show. Two seasons......six episodes in each. I have (3) left to finish the series.

I will give up Netflix for the summer, but they allow you 7 days to renew your payment method. Actually I had an 8th day and didn't know how to take advantage of it, so I binged a short series: After Life.

I wish I would have seen it sooner. Starts with a very cynical, bitter and depressed man distraught by the death of his life that behaves like a angry (but witty) asshole to everyone, but it's far from behing a nihilistic experience - it becomes surprising and heartwarming. Highly suggested.

Other stuff that I've finished:

Bojack Horseman, season 4. I will definitively finish the series sooner or later.
Lovesick, the entire series. Love, relationship and other issues framed with the story of a guy testing positive for chlamydia, and having to contact his previous partners to warn them. Starts very good but by season 3 becomes boring and trite.
Dead to Me. Black comedy (or dramedy) revolving around the mystery of who ran over and killed the protagonist's husband. Liked it overall, but definitively didn't love it, I won't bother with a third season.

And now I'm watching Killing Eve which is entertaining as I expected  :metal
