I'd love to hear your thoughts. I watched the first three seasons and while I will follow it if they renew it on Netflix, I have some pretty strong feelings about that show.
Overall, I am digging it. There are times when I am a bit frustrated with it, but it's been good overall.
Some of my frustration is the characters making extremely poor choices, like Grace separating from Ben and having him move out, or Micaela and Jared's one night stand. The former was frustrating on two counts: First off, it made me REALLY dislike Grace. But more than that, it felt out of character for her based on what we had seen so far, and felt like poor writing. Not sure if it was Paul Holahan's directing or Laura Putney's/Margaret Easley's writing that is to blame, but that seemed to come out of left field and felt very contrived to drive a temporary wedge between characters that didn't really need to be there. Micaela and Jared didn't feel like bad writing, but it annoys me to no end to see people that are portrayed as smart people do something so foolish.
The special effects are somewhat baffling. They are usually pretty good. But then there are times, like when they show "monsters" (the wolf; the gargoyle that Grace sees on top of the car) that are legitimately cringey. I get that budget can be limited for shows like this, but...eh.
Otherwise, no real criticisms so far. I think the show is pretty good. It is often a slow burn, so you have to be patient. But I am ok with that.
Other random note: I hate Jared. It is primarily his lack of self control that not only destroyed his marriage with Lourdes, but also, by extension, destroyed Micaela's relationship with Lourdes and his relationship with Micaela. And it is also his lack of self control that got Micaela shot, and his cowardess in owning up to it that has Zeke in prison.
What are your "strong feelings" about it? Good or bad? Just don't spoil anything for me. FYI, for where I am specifically: Completed S2, ep. 1 last night. I watched a few minutes of episode 2 before going to bed, so I know Vance is alive. And that Olive is visiting the 828 cult.
Oh, and I am highly suspicious of the "death date" issue. I don't think there is a preordained death date for any of them, and think that is likely a red herring and they just don't yet fully understand why things played out the way they did with Griffin, and any interrelation with Cal's tombstone vision. It really smells like a red herring. But, assuming I am right (which I might not be) I cannot decide whether it is poor writing in that I am supposed to think it is real and be worried for the characters but am easily seeing through it, or if it is good writing in that I am reading it correctly as an outsider and can see what they cannot.
