You should definitely check it out. It's got a certain twang to it but it's not overwhelming. I would say the single is one of the worst songs on the record.

I think Born and Raised is my favorite song so far. Those vocal harmonies are awesome.

I'd go gay for him and then I realised I'm already gay so he is mine!  :lol

In all seriousness, new album is just fantastic. He is being better and better both musically and vocally. Raised is my personal favourite so far but honestly I can say that there is no bad track on it.

I have listened to it ten times. Fuck I love this. He has definitely matured as a songwriter; while it's still very much John Mayer, very few pop artist s would take a risk in releasing something like this. He says this is his most cohesive and honest album yet, and I agree. He seems like he's in a real good place. As much as I love his more guitar hero-y stuff, I wouldn't be upset at all if this more restrained stuff sticks around for a while.

Best part? Since he had to cancel his record, he is writing another album.

New favorite track of the day: Whiskey Whiskey Whiskey.

I got this in the mail today along with Clockwork Angels and I'm loving it so far. Something John Mayer deserves a lot of credit for: Each of his albums has its own identity. They all sound so different from the last. He's definitely not one to keep putting out the same record year after year.

I've been through it twice now and man... Easily his second best after Continuum and an incredible record in its own right.

I am resurrecting this thread because it's been a really long time and John Mayer has a newish album out. What do you guys think of Sob Rock and in general of his place amongst guitarists today? A lot has changed in 10 years. He has an uber successful signature PRS line and his style appears to have changed on Sob Rock.

John Mayer is one of the polarizing guitarists in my brain. On one hand, I think it is pretty obvious he is a serious guitar player. On the other, his fame is outsized for his playing abilities (I realize that fame is a product of many factors, including but not limited to his dashing good looks). I would not put him on the Mount Rushmore of guitarists for any genre or style...maybe just pop? But I think he has brought a lot of positive attention to the instrument and has written many great songs over the years.

Yeah, I think it's kind of a shame that his tabloid exploits and relatively blander songs have completely overshadowed his other abilities in too many people's minds.  Where the Light Is is an incredibly impressive live album, and you don't have to get past the opener in "Neon" to realize it.  Continuum and Try! are pretty great studio albums as well, and there's fantastic material scattered about his others too.  I haven't kept up with the last few albums though.
