Best first song for new listener?
« on: April 20, 2017, 12:08:40 PM »
So I've somehow managed to get a really cool girl interested in me, she knows I'm seeing DT on Sunday and she's asking me to introduce her to them.

She's into pop punk  :lol What the hell do I play her first!!?

For the record I played her my power metal band's album and she really liked it... so it may not be as tricky as I'm thinking  ???

Instrumedly.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Make sure she is reading the lyrics and contemplating the depth of existence while listening. Constantly remind her to be reading the lyrics as James sings, and always make sure she is aware of how technical everything is.

I'd go with something recent, the older production on I&W might throw some people off... Maybe something straight forward like The Enemy Inside, The Looking Glass, On The Backs of Angels, etc...

The Mirror, These Walls or Forsaken.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Just casually put in a DT cd when she's not paying attention and don't tell her who it is. That way you'll know if she honestly likes it if it catches her attention.
Octavarium is a safe place to start, or SC, ADTOE, DT12 are safe too imo..

Not sure if he was joking but my daughter is a huge Green Day/Blink fan and 6DOIT is by far her favorite DT album.  And she has heard them all....repeatedly

It was by far their biggest mainstream "hit" for a reason.

Forsaken.

Agreed, either Forsaken or I Walk Beside You. The other options listed here are not a good bridge for a pop music fan.

Take the Time is another good one in my experience. Anytime I'm listening to IaW around non-DT fans, that song always grabs their attention for some reason.

The first few minutes of Instrumedley is what I've been showing first to everyone new to DT. I think it gives you a good idea of what makes DT unique.

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

If she truly has interest, play her I&W and Awake. You can't say you like a band or not based on one song.

I think it's still their most instantly accessible tune, although Take the Time is a close second.

Well, with a better recording quality I think PMU has the potential to be hit in that era for the new listeners.

You can't say you like a band or not based on one song.

This, although instead of a full album I'd rather make her listen to a compilation of a few songs; not too much songs either to not overwhelm her..

I was going to say something similar. If someone is willing to listen to a new band, I don't think they'd be so narrowminded to refuse to ever listen to anything again after 30 seconds of a single song. Even when I'm most bored on YouTube and check out a song from a band I heard of but never listened to, I randomly skip through 2-3 songs to get a general idea. There is no need to pick one song with that song having the sole responsability of making a new fan or not, just suggest 3-4 songs maybe explaining the difference, as in "If you want something heavy, go for The Mirror, if you want something easier, pick Forsaken and These Walls, if you feel like trying to listen to a huge long song, listen to A Change of Seasons when you have 20 minutes to spare".

Something from the Mangini era. Show 'em DT is current and relevant. Then bring in the classics.

About to Crash and About to Crash Reprise. They're catchy, hooky, good production, beautiful guitar and keyboard sound and a good representation of DT in my opinion.
