What's the point of writing with conscious influences?  Don't you want everything you write to be your own ideas?

it was my own ideas, but I was always thinking in the back of my mind of dt songs, because imo dt writes perfect lyrics, so of course I would look to them while writing lyrics.  But I didn't do that this time.

I'm not bashing DT when I say this, but if you think DT writes the perfect lyrics, you need to get out more, musically I mean.

I tend to agree.

But different people look for different things in their lyrics.  I like my lyrics to be more poetic and more deeply meaningful, so since KevMo left, Myung was excluded from lyric writing, and Petrucci joined Rhapsody of Fire, Dream Theater's lyrics have been pretty hit-or-miss for me.  But, icy, if you like 'em, who's to tell you not to like 'em? 

Still, it can be a bad idea to try to conform your thoughts and your words into someone else's style.  You're writing about your feelings and your experiences.  Why would you want to tell that story on someone else's terms?  The best way to write it is to write it in the way that feels most genuine.  I would bet that your lyric writing and even the music that you'll write with it will benefit from ignoring whatever influences you think you have and just putting your words down on paper in whatever way they come to you.

These lyrics are great, but you can ALWAYS push yourself to do better. In my amateur opinion, the more lyrical influences (And this can go for musical too) you have, the more varied your stuff will become, and it will sound a ton less one-sided. I can't even tell you how much my writing style has changed since I've broadened my horizons to bands like Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, and a ton of others.

Also, Steven Wilson = God writing lyrics
