Anyways, with how much I loved that record, I've tried checking their other stuff out several times and each time I've been really disappointed. Neither part of Precambrian did anything for me, and Heliocentric just felt like a bunch of dry, sterile, mid-tempo nothingness. I'm still going to check out the new record when it comes out, but this song just sounded like more Heliocentric to me. If it's actually supposed to be about the Permian-Triassic extinction event, basically the most apocalyptic event in the history of the planet so far, why does it sound so reserved? What happened to the earth-shattering emotion and heaviness of the last two songs on Pelagial? *Those* songs sound like the entire fucking world is ending. Wouldn't that have been so fitting for a concept like this?

I'm sort of in the same boat as you, Pelagial was the first album I heard and it's absolutely their best. But instead of thinking it's a fluke, I view it as a creative peak that is likely to result in higher quality than albums prior to Pelagial. As for Permian being like Heliocentric, the melody lines are far too big for it to be a legit comparison. It sounds more like a cross of Pelagial and Precambrian (Proterozoic), and at this point I'm perfectly fine with that. I'll reflect on why it seems relatively uplifting compared to the lyrical theme once I've heard the full album (heck, we even have a II coming up).

Yeah, I'm hoping for that too. This single doesn't have me all that optimistic, but hey, singles often aren't among the best songs on their respective albums so anything could happen.

I didn't even have to wait that long for Robin Staps to shed some light on this: human point of view. At points of the song the lyrics could be interpreted as Earth talking to humanity, how it would "kill to relieve a load". But it hasn't quite happened yet.

I got super excited when I was told who was singing on this track the first time, but when I heard it thought the guest spot doesn't add much, actually sounded very similar to Loïc from what I remember to the point where the guest spot seemed kinda useless.

Great track though

I'm really not sure about this album so far. The last song was pretty good, particularly vocally, but nothing mindblowing. And this one is the same, only without the great vocals. Musically everything feels very plodding, although I will say the section at around 7:00 on this one is pretty cool.

I don't know. Maybe Robin should write all the albums like instrumentals and then have Loic add vocals after. Maybe that's the magic of Pelagial. I guess I should have expected this when Robin described this album as picking up where Precambrian left off, since Precambrian is by and large not very good. At least the vocals will be better this time.

I don't know, I'm not trying to be negative. I still love the band and I'll buy this regardless, but from the very first bit of Pelagial you could tell it was something special, and I'm just really not getting that sense here.

Also, Jonas Renkse?

Interesting, Precambrian is probably my favourite by them and arguably the fan favourite. But of course that's what happens when a band releases something as special as Pelagial, the fanbase gets divided a bit more while before that they were mostly sludgy and posty rather than proggy.

I don't know. Maybe Robin should write all the albums like instrumentals and then have Loic add vocals after.
I never asked about Phanerozoic specifically but I am pretty sure this is still the case, buuut they will be doing an AMA on Reddit (/r/progmetal) very soon (currently planned on the 11th) so if you want to ask anything directly to the bandmembers it's the perfect opportunity to find out :tup

So the new album is pretty damn close to exactly what I expected. Robin Staps's significant development as a songwriter makes this easily their second best behind Pelagial, and the occasional Precambrian-isms work really well (direct reference to Cryogenian being the most obvious). Tracks 5 and 6 need to grow on me more but otherwise this is brilliant.

EDIT: The Cryogenian musical theme is actually reprised throughout the album. Here's a pretty in-depth album review discussing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noCvkDVXos0

Came across this not-so-recent interview by The Metal Tris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybUf8ErWW-U

Phanerozoic II (already mixed) will cover both Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras on double vinyl, so I'm expecting over an hour of new music.

So the new monster 13 and a half minute lead single (ft. Renkse) just dropped, thoughts? It's been tough to keep my mouth shut about this one, but I really think they outdid themselves on this song

Man, I just can't really get into The Ocean's new stuff. Too much like the Precambrian sound for me, although obviously the vocals are much better. Just gonna sit around until they go back to the Anthropocentric/Pelagial sound, I guess.

And here's me thinking Anthropocentric is closer to Precambrian than anything after it :lol There are obviously significant differences between the two, but the heavier moments have quite similar riffing. Even though the Phanerozoic project is a spiritual successor to Precambrian, most of the composition is quite different in terms of melody and structure.

I'm also not really seeing the close sound link between Pelagial and Anthropocentric - Pelagial is very much its own thing and stands far above everything else they've ever done, imo

Maybe it's a function of the band or the production. I don't know exactly how to describe it but Anthropocentric/Pelagial have a really big, open sound, whereas Precambrian and what I've heard from the new one I can't spell feels very confined to me.

Maybe I just miss the Swiss guys, I don't know. I agree that Pelagial is by far their best, though.

New single has some moments sounding a lot like Tool, and I didn't like it. I am tired of those riffs after hearing them for the whole length of Fear Inoculum. It's also the first time I hear a clear influence of another band in one of their songs.

Apart from that, I liked the song, but it's not at the level of some tracks of part 1

How much control do we have over what we wish for?

When I heard that for the first time I was like "that's a pretty Tool kind of thing".

:lol  But here's the thing.  I find the screamer guy to be really annoying.  I think Devonian Nascent is an awesome song and I like it musically even after Jonas' part is done, and I do listen to the whole song.  But I barely tolerate him and I sampled a few other songs back when that came out and felt the same.  But admittedly, I don't know much about the band at all, so I suppose I could stand to listen to a few more.
