Great story about that whole part of the movie. Kubrick hires an actor to play the GSgt, and Lee Ermey to be the technical advisor. Ermey wants the role of GSgt. Kubrock says no. Ermey puts on the GSgt uniform, goes through the routine of chewing out the new recruits. Kubrick decides that's better than anything he and his actor could have come up with. Gives Ermey the job.
