If setlist.fm is right, the intro is the song "The Colonel" from the band Two Steps from Hell. Goosebumps!!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9we6Kxl6gak

Confirmed - Intro and TDEN:
https://youtu.be/hEVRQ9VxrH8

Of the videos I've seen, I think I enjoy MM's drumming the best in this one. There is a certain brutality to the song, his pinpoint execution helps with it. In the other videos it was rather distracting.

Tons of background tracks in this video.

Does anybody know if they played/are playing the same exact set today? The obvious answer would be yes, but I'm still curious to see if they changed at least one or two songs.

For what it's here the set is the same: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dream-theater/2017/sala-santa-cecilia-auditorium-parco-della-musica-rome-italy-63f8c677.html

I asked to my brother that was in the show but he hasn't answered yet.. I'll post it here as soon as he does..

EDIT: it was the same setlist.. I'll upload some pics in minutes..

I listened to the videos of HK and TTT.

As much as I love MM, he really does sound like a drum machine on HK. Not a fan of that at all. I hope it's just because it was the first show but the song as a whole just did not feel good to me.

As for TTT, changing the key is totally fine with me. I have perfect pitch so I noticed it right away but I don't blame them for doing this, in fact I would encourage it for James.
The jam at the end is fun and I'm glad they are doing some of this again.
However...
I'm sorry, but James sounds horrible on TTT. Especially in that one verse (understandable,) he is literally not even in the same key. I assume James improves more throughout a tour, but some of the IW songs are going to be a struggle even in a lower key.

A couple of observations after watching TDEN video.

1) what looks like loads of empty seats near the front?

2) JP looked like he struggled in the run up to the solo (and the solo)

Damn mangini really simplified Hell's Kitchen on the cymbal parts... This is my only issue with his playing, he doesn't get the nuances of MP's cymbal work..

I don't think it's not that he doesn't get it. It's more of it's just not him. It's not his thing, so O think he would rather not do it than try to be Portnoy.

From the limited clips I have seen, Mangini in its raw form is best seen in the TTT outro.

What I do wonder is whether Jordan transposed his keyboard or if he's actually playing the songs in the lower key. He's very capable of learning them in the new key, and I think he did that, because, for what I know, people with perfect pitch (which Jordan has) really struggle with changing the tuning of their instruments, since they already know how each note sounds with each fret/position/key.

I've been wondering the exact same thing about Jordan. Does anyone have an answer to that?

While I don't know, I think it makes more sense that he just transposed the keyboard. That way, he doesn't have to change anything about how he plays those songs. :)

So, as I told in this and other threads, my brother (argentinian as myself) went to Europe for three weeks, and decided to see today's show in Rome.. He sent me these pics:

PS: I'm not Bosk ;D, but you can probably note something odd by looking these pictures..... Hint: all of them were taken by my brother.. ::)

Woah, you're right. Really didn't like his interpretation of that one.

I normally think people go overboard with the "OMG, Mangini didn't play it just like Portnoy" nonsense, but he definitely played that song very stiff.  A lot of cool fills in the original, but he really simplified it and took away some of the cool nuances.  He's still a beast, though.

The songs sound so weird downtuned. I mean, it's probably best for James, but still. 25 years listening to them in one key and then suddenly changing them feels really weird to me.

That guitar and keyboard jam at the end is rocking!
Honestly, I wish they played WFS a halfstep lower, not because James can't sing that one (he obviously can), but because it just sounds really cool. I tried this a long time ago and I love how the piano line sounds down a halfstep...much darker. The key changes can absolutely have an effect on the song overall; true many people may not notice or care but for those who do, it's a new way to listen to these songs.

Ok.. I have to admit.. TDEN makes a kick ass opener.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I cam answer 1): the show started at 20:30 sharp and many people were bit late or still haanging in the lobby earing and drinking, suring the song they rushed to their sets but there were hundreds of people altogether and it took them at least the whole song. For some even more...

Man....Downtuning Take The Time was the worst decision ever. James looks all pissed or annoyed. It just doesn't work.

It sounded fine to me given the sound quality, and given my expectations about what a nearly 50-year-old singer is capable of on the first show of a tour.

The 'whoah's leading up to the F also sounded better to me. In recent years, they often sounded a bit off when singing the song in the original key.

So I'm glad they decided to do this, I'd much rather hear things this way than having James struggling with such a tough set night after night. I'm interested to see how it seems when I actually see the show live though.

This dude seems to have several mini clips of the show: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmyBPi6kTp6m8G99vGLjcwg/videos

(1) Intro tape and TDEN's intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sooc5XbPvck

(2) TBP's intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjRIJ3tgfLk

(3) TSCO's first chorus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbca7gXS0us

(4) AIA's ending (w/a bit of Ener Sandman too) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izAacz-qGUU

(5) Mix of 1992's radio hits and PMU's intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlsSHROkIvE

(6) Metropolis' intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pELc97T_7qo

(6) -yup, same name- JLB speaking before JR does a piano intro to WFS, and a bit of the song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teBD4um7mGo

(7) TGoM's first verses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSVJz6sIWz4

These are awesome.  The mix of radio hits was really fun and a nice touch.  I know they've done the "sandman" thing before but I still like it.  This show with all these elements looks like it will be a great time.  If there turn out to be dates in my area, I'll have to seriously consider going.

I especially liked the Metropolis section here:  https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6Diy5jVwE/
