I always looked for the 12 pack on sale. Always the money saver.
This is what I try to do, but a lot of the time I don't want 12 of the same beer. The variety pack is always a good way to go if it's possible. One of my favorite local breweries in Minnesota is Schell's, which is a old, family owned, German style brewery. I used to be able to regularly get 12 packs of their beers for $12.99. Now, the sale price I see is regularly $14.99, which isn't terrible, but is more than the $1 per bottle I try to get. It seems like this is the case with everything. It's all $1 per 6 pack, or $2 per 12 pack more than it was just a few years ago.

You're getting old. :lol  I cry about all the prices.  Like when the half gallon of ice cream now is not 48 oz instead of 64 like the old days but cost 50 cents more.

That's certainly part of it. With three kids and my wife staying home with them, there's just less disposable income than their used to be. So that $2 more is a big deal to me now.

It really is.  I remember trying to save for the house and just getting by even with the extra hours I picked up.

Is Miller High Life (the champagne of beers) considered "craft beer"?  If so, I like craft beers too.

I find all this talk about crappy "craft beers" mildly irritating.

I find this majorly irritating:

I'm slowly coming around to our new reality on this.  I'm not against the ban, the plastic is bad for the environment.  But I don't think the country has really adjusted to it yet, soon maybe.  My gf has given me cloth bags to re-use when I go grocery shopping and I've been slowly getting better at remembering to do so, but here's the thing.  Once i actually use it, I think it's a better bagging experience to bring your own.  My own re-usable bag can hold the same as four plastic bags.  I just have a hard time remember to bring it with me when I go out, I have a few and should just leave a couple in my car.

This just passed in the city of Boston.

We have had this in Australia for about 6 months or more.  No more plastic bags as they are a health hazard for the environment, bring your own or stupidly enough buy a reusable plastic bag for 15 cents.  Just a money making scheme by the supermarkets.

I'm not against the ban, the plastic is bad for the environment.

So are paper bags, and reusable bags, when you factor in manufacturing and waste volume. Just more hippie virtue signaling bullcrap from our politicians who just know better than we do. Don't most people use those plastic bags for trash, thus negating their "Single Use" moniker? Are politicians going to continue to shape policy based on what they heard from some grade schooler?

The funny thing is, because we use to use those single use bags for trash after we get our groceries, supermarkets still sell bin bags which I now have to buy for $2 for like a roll of 50.  It hasn't cut down any risk to the environment whatsoever, just as many bags are getting tossed out and now more money is being made.  It's a joke, there is no benefit to the environment with this movement.

This probably goes beyond the level of "mildly irritating," but....

We've had the no "single use" plastic bag thing in The People's Socialist Republic of California ("PSRB") for a year plus (and even longer in some counties).  It's annoying as fuck because we re-used those "single use" bags for a number of things.  We're now forced to buy plastic bags for those purposes, so I'm not sure the law has really accomplished anything.  Also, the "single use" plastic bags have now been replaced by thicker plastic bags that are designed to be used multiple times but I'm sure are less bad for the environment.

The PSRB -- led by former Party Chairman Jerry Moonbeam -- also recently enacted a law that prohibits fast-food restaurants from offering anything other than water or white milk as the "default" drink with kids' meals.  And today, I heard on the radio that the Politburo (i.e., the state legislature) is considering FIVE different bills that will tax soft drinks and (effectively) ban Big Gulps.

I generally love living in my home state, but this kind of crap really makes me think about relocating.

Seattle has had a soda tax for a year or two. I really hate taxes that can't decide if they exist to punish unapproved behavior or generate revenue. Cause you can't do both. It has brought in more money than they expected, so it ain't changing behaviors. Just costing lower income people more to buy a Sprite. Which you would think the "progressive" Seattle leadership would hate. But they are getting more money, so it's cool.

I remember my last employer started offering compositable silverware instead of plastic in the cafeteria. People hated it because their spoon would melt in their hot soup.  :lol

And I live in one of the out-colonies of the PSRC, or "Connecticut".   Gov. Ned ("Four more years of Dan Malloy") Lamont is doing: tax on bags, tax on soft drinks, tax on nips (seriously), tax on orgasms (not seriously).

Dryer venting. I swear one of the most seemingly simple yet in reality ridiculously frustrating things I've ever done with regards to home improvement is connecting the dryer venting tubes. I can change a garbage disposal with minimal effort in 30 minutes, same with a dishwasher, a washing machine or a fridge in less than 5. But connecting the ducting to a dryer and the wall results in massive frustration every time without fail. Is it me, or is it just a flawed design we can't seem to improve upon?

Oh I know what you mean. My dryer isn't very far from the vent but it took every little trick I knew and some very careful stretching to make the damn thing actually reach and connect. It took me about 20 minutes total for something that should've been a 30 second job. After I set it up it was like finally getting an old NES to work. Don't touch it, don't breath on it, don't even look at it. Just let it do its thing.

BOOM!

The problem for me is, the alignment and layout when the dryer is out and I can get my fat ass behind there is not the same alignment and layout that needs to happen when the dryer is tucked nicely in the space and the sliding door can close.  I go through this dance where it falls off about halfway through putting it back and I have to do the "leaner" and try to fix it while I'm hanging upside down.  Not pretty for anyone in the room.  :)

That is kind of brilliant.

On to the next one, though:

CHALLENGES.  Now it's the "cheese challenge", where presumably grown, presumably mature, presumably sentient adults are throwing freshly unwrapped slabs of cheese product at their babies, and recording it when it sticks to their face.

WTF?

Are we that bored?  That starved for attention?   Why not take that 32 seconds and put the fucking phone down (maybe put it somewhere you can't reach it... like your ass) and hug your kid.  Talk to your kid.  GODFORBID you read a BOOK with your kid.

Do we not realize/remember that kids will MIMIC us?   That every action, every word, every interest is another brick in the wall that will be that kid?   Now, I get it, this is slightly hyperbolic, and 26 seconds - at least that kind of 26 seconds - is not likely to scar the kid for life, but I'm working on the assumption that this is not a one-off (because, you have to have heard about it SOMEWHERE.  I just happened to hear about it because I came in from shoveling snow and the news had ended and Wendy Williams - likely a subject of a future "Things that Stadler finds mildly irritating v.2" - was talking about it.)

I rarely agree with your opinions on internet culture Stadler, but I think you hit the nail right on the head with this one.

To a certain extent I can understand having fun by doing some trendy challenges, but involving (or in this case, even harming) your actual child for the sake of being trendy is just crossing the line imo.

I did the ice bucket challenge a few years ago, it was meant for a good cause and seemed fun.  Now, I look at these challenges and just shake my head. I've never heard of the cheese challenge, honestly sounds kind of funny but also is incredibly dumb to be a trend.

I just searched on YouTube for it & it seems the most popular videos related to it have more dislikes than likes.

At least some people seem to know what's up.

Most challenges that seem completely ridiculous or borderline shocking are, I'm fairly certain, just creations of Reddit and the like because people are aware that no one is going to do any research into it to find out the source. Some of them end up on the news or in articles like "look at this SHOCKING trend going around" where it's really just a small handful of people having a laugh and whoever else they got to believe the story spreading it.

The marital thread got me thinking about the biggest household divide - the one between people whose first instinct is to get up and grab something they need, and the people whose first instinct is to ask someone else to quickly get them something.

I am a person in group A who grew up with people in group B and frankly it was the most annoying thing in my childhood home. If I'm sick and good enough to stand, I'll get up and make myself a cup of tea. If someone's just a bit closer to a plate I need, and not significantly closer, I'll get up and get it myself. If I need the remote, I'll look for it myself. Normal person behavior.

My brother and sister will literally ask you to pick up things all day :yeahright They'll only drink water when someone else is going to the kitchen to pour some for themselves, they'll only drink tea when someone else is making a cup, they'll ask you to pick something up for them even if you're further away. When I'm asked to do something like that I'll automatically think "oh they must really need me to get that thing for them", get up, bring it, and then realize that's just how I think! They're just asking out of laziness and they're lucky enough to live with a sucker like me! When I asked them to explain their train of thought, it goes like this: I can't be bothered to get up. You will get up at some point. If I ask you and you say yes, then it means it doesn't bother you, so yay, we're both happy! When you say no, well, that's when I'll get up and get it myself. isn't it great how you're always conveniently getting up to get something I just remembered I really need, smooooch, love you sis!  >:(

So. Freaking. Annoying. And then it transfers outside the house as well! If I go out shopping suddenly they remember they really need something, they wanted to go out and get it, but they've been sooooo busy/sick and can I please just pick it up on the way?

Last year I literally flew to Serbia like five days before a family wedding and my sister, who had a full month to get ready and get what she needs, suddenly decided she needed to switch some part of her outfit so she needed one more piece and she was just so busy (or sick or both I can't even keep up), so I went to the mall and picked it up for her, laughing all the way. You think some things will change when you move out, and life will go on without you, but some things stay the same I guess  :lol

Yea, I'm an A as well but my mom is a B and I could not stand it growing up with her asking me to do meaningless things for her that she could easily do herself.  Now I get it, my moms busy with the kids, but I'm talking things like grab the remote for example.  Well if you are watching TV and I had nothing to do with the remote missing and I'm not even in the room, why are you yelling for me to come across the house and search for you?  Now as I am older, I don't mind helping my mom with stupid things like that, but also, I dont mind calling her out for it either which got lots of laughs from my father recently when I last visited my parents in Florida.

rant

I'm a bit of both, depending on circumstances.  I guess I'm more A than B.  But I won't hesitate to ask someone in my house for something if it is more convenient for them to get it/do it.  But on the flip side, when *I* am up getting something, I will frequently ask others if they want me to get some for them.  We serve each other, because I just kind of feel like that's what families do, and it shouldn't be a biggie.

Yeah, it's not a biggie if there's at least two people in team A  :hat

To illustrate, here's another anecdote: we were both at our desks doing some homework. Suddenly, my sister turned to me and asked, Mora, do you feel like having a cup of tea? Touched and surprised, I said yes please! And she said: Great, while you're at it can you make me a cup as well?  :rollin

"Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are God.” — Christopher Hitchens
