Band concert Blu-rays/DVDs discussion and recommendations
« on: December 13, 2016, 12:14:47 PM »

Since attending the DT concert last month I've been on a binge watch of all band concerts of late, started with almost all of DT's live releases and then moved on to Rush and am switching between other bands. Was looking through the bluray versions of concerts that I had and it's steadily growing, DVDs I already have tons and have to take an inventory to see where I stand with that. I categorize all my blurays through the blu-ray.com app which makes it so easy as you can just scan the barcodes and it adds to your collection. I recently added quite a few more concert blurays with the Rush R40 6 disc bluray boxset being one of the prized collection. When I get in this mood I somehow become an impulsive buyer and can't stop. I got Flying Colors: Second Flight and can't believe I never grabbed it when it first came out, simply amazing performances and the audio mix is sublime on there.

Here's my list of artist blurays with the album versions listed below the live ones, any others you guys think I'm missing or should definitely have?

Between The Buried And Me - Future Sequence Live At The Fidelitorium
Dream Theater - Live At Budokan
Dream Theater - Live At Luna Park
Dream Theater - Breaking The Fourth Wall
Flying Colors - Live In Europe
Flying Colors - Second Flight: Live At The Z7
Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day
Meshuggah - The Ophidian Trek
Metallica - Quebec Magnetic
Muse - Live At Rome Olympic Stadium
Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live
Steven Wilson - Drive Home
Rush - Rush In Rio
Rush - R30
Rush - Snakes And Arrows Live
Rush - Time Machine
Rush - Clockwork Angels Tour
Rush - R40 Live
Slayer - Live At Wacken
Transatlantic - Kaliveoscope

Studio Albums:
Steven Wilson - Hand.Cannot.Erase
Steven Wilson - 4 1/2
Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing
Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
Opeth - Pale Communion

On the way :
Steven Wilson  - Get All You Deserve
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live  & Unwrapped

Was thinking of getting Porcupine Tree's Anesthetize but need confirmation if the bluray works for the US as I've read complaints that it's not US playable even though it states otherwise.

Iron Maiden - Flight 666. ( my personal fav of the Maiden dvds)
Iron Maiden - En Vivo. Good concert, my only complaint is that the video editing was overkill. The camera  angles jump around too much.
  YES - Songs from Tsongas
You allready have all the Rush And Dream Theater I would recommend.lol

I've been thinking of upgrading those Maiden concerts. I have them on DVD and the sound already is stellar so it would most likely be just a visual update. I might do it later.
I'll have to check out the Yes one.
I must also add I won't mind recommendations from any genre as long as the sound is great and performance is worth watching.

I personally am of the opinion that PT's Arriving Somewhere SLAYS Anesthetize in every possible way. The visuals on that film are stunning. And the set list is the best PT has ever released.

I suggest Alter Bridge's Live From Amsterdam.  That was a great set and playing for them in its time (2008).

Also, I suggest Shinedown's Somewhere in the Stratosphere (it comes with two live sets, acoustic and electric, but I prefer the acoustic set since it seems so much more honest than the electric set).

I'm waiting for the Rhapsody blu ray to arrive. Hoping it's going to be great.

I enjoyed the Extreme Pornograffitti that came out recently.

Babymetal - Live at Wembley SSE Arena.

Holy crap it's good! Crystal clear picture quality and great sound. Only criticism is that it's not in 5.1 surround sound. That would make it perfect.

Some I recently really enjoyed:

Ayreon - Theater Equation (many fantastic vocalists and great sound and atmosphere, filming a bit wonky at times)
The Neal Morse Band - Alive Again (great prog rock with some metal moments, lot's of fun)
Iced Earth - Alive in Athens (Barlow in his prime, fantastic heavy metal performance)
Queen - Live at the Rainbow '74 (a young and energetic more rock orientated Queen, excellent remaster from recent times)

Edit: Jethro Tull one was the wrong one, since the one I mentioned is the one who only has footage for the first 30 minutes or so. I know I had fun with another one from the 70's but am not sure which one (my dad has basically all Ian Anderson related releases ever so I just randomly watched one at home).

Queensryche - Operation: LIVEcrime

That is a staple for all progressive metal fans. Their historic concept album, in the band's prime. If you dig it, and dig the band, then I'd get:

Queensryche - Building Empires (features live performances, videos, interview clips, etc.)

And if you like all that, then track down a copy of the 20th anniversary box set of Operation: Mindcrime album, which has the DVD: Video: Mindcrime with it. That has all the videos from the Operation: Mindcrime record, and some other goodies. You'll be all set on Queensryche stuff from the original lineup that are "must haves" in terms of DVD, after that. Sadly, their 1985 Live in Tokyo release is out-of-print.

Oh, and I second the ICED EARTH Live in Athens suggestion.

Any self respecting Coheed and Cambria fan should have this (although my ex girlfriend has my copy  :sadpanda:)

It's probably one of my all time favourite live performances. They performed albums 1-4, one each night, four nights in a row!! Man, do I wish I could've gone to this! I think their first four albums are pretty much flawless. Really great stuff, I need to go watch it again.

Made a mistake with Jethro Tull, that is not the one I saw so I don't know which one (it was a tad short anyways). To make up two others I really love:

The Who - Tommy and Quadrophenia Live (1989) (two of the best rock operas out there performed live with guest musicians and vocalists)
Within Temptation - Black Symphony (great symphonic metal with an orchestra and beautifully recorded)

Thanks again for everyone's recommendations, it's a bit overwhelming actually to go through the list and figure out what to get. They all sound like absolute must haves.

I'm sort of in the Peter Gabriel mood now and watching Growing Up Live is a visual and audio treat. Was about to grab Live in Athens next but might hold off on some more PG stuff for a bit.
Anyone have any of the Marillion concerts? If you were to get a bluray concert of them which one would be the must have one?

I have all the Fish-era ones.   I think I have one or two of the Hogarth era, though I know the live versions of Marbles are stellar (anything with a live Neverland is going to be at least very good, if not great).

I love concert DVDs.  I have a pretty good collection.  Some of my favorites (in terms of video, sound, performance, setlist, editing aka not just my favorite bands):

Kamelot - One Cold Winter's Night - Maybe my favorite overall concert DVD.  Just so well done and it's in a small venue but that didn't stop the band from going all out.

Devin Townsend - The Retinal Circus - OMG this concert is on another level.  Was supposed to be a concert that summarized his career as well as had a loose storyline around the songs (he even admits you need to use your imagination a bit to understand the story during the concert :lol).  There's A LOT going on the stage during the concert.  It's honestly unlike anything I've ever seen and was pulled off ridiculously well.  This is actually what got me sucked into his music.

Iron Maiden - Flight 666 - The actual Flight 666 movie is amazing, but the bonus disc with essentially the entire concert (just broken up from different shows) is really awesome and has probably the best editting of any IM dvd. (Steve Harris did not touch it)

Blind Guardian -  Imaginations through the Looking Glass - Really awesome setlist and this outdoors festival was set up for BG to film it so it's packed with hardcore fans singing along to all the songs.  Just a really great atmosphere and of course the performance of And Then There Was Silence

Dream Theater - Live at Budokan - I find this to be DT's best overall.  Score didn't match the video/audio quality of Budokan IMO.

Pagan's Mind - Full Circle - Has two sets from Pagans Mind and while they are far from being one of my favorite bands, there is some really groovey instrumentals going on in this concert.  Also, for a low budget band, they managed to have some amazing quality in this video, much better than bands who are much bigger than they are.  I was simply blown away by how good this was.

Within Temptation - Black Symphony - I think you may get more bang for buck if you had their newest DVD, but the Black Symphony concert with orchestra and choir is just stunning.  Great atmosphere and the music just sounds soooo good with the real orchestra there.  Also guest appearance by Anneke!

Honorable mentions:

The Big Four Live from Sofia - Not the best in performance and quality (pretty solid though) but you get the full show, all four bands performances on two discs (Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer, Anthrax)

311 - 311 Day Live in New Orleans - Poor quality, but ummm 65 song setlist! Hard to beat that in terms of getting a lot of music on one purchase.

Epica - Retrospect -  A really nice 10 year anniversary concert with orchestra and choir.  Could have made the top list, but the concert lighting had an effect on the cameras making it not the best visually to watch.

...and I feel like Im forgetting more good ones, but on another note, I am super excited to get my next blu ray, Nightwish's Vehicle of Spirit.  Two full concerts plus tons of bonus songs.  Based on the youtube videos, this one could be on my list of great concert dvds.

My Rhapsody bluray arrived the other day. Unfortunately there is no live DVD part. The bluray part is some Dolby version of the album that I don't have the equipment for, with a double live cd. Really should read things more closely.

I'm not a huge QR fan, but I do enjoy OM so I got this DVD and honestly was not impressed by it.  The performance felt extremely cheesey and I remember not liking the camera angles.  However, it's been a long time since I watched so maybe I'd enjoy it again.  I think I watched only once and put it on my shelf and that's where it still is.

Please let us know how that is; I've debated that one before.   The setlist (I know it spans multiple shows) is just killer.  Jigsaw?   Neverland?  The only glaring omission is Slainte Mhath, and with three blu-rays full of Marillion, it's kind of lame to complain.

Finally got this set yesterday, more than a month after ordering. Didn't know that the Racket Records store went on a 3 week holiday mere hours after I placed the order.
Watched the first disc and it was fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of the Holidays in Eden album but the band was so full of energy and H just kills it. The video and audio are excellent and still have 2 more discs to go.

After getting Morsefest 2015 on Bluray I went on a spending spree and got Morsefest 2014 on bluray as well. Along with an order for Live Momentum and Testimony 2 Live at LA. I might as well order Alive Again now to complete the set. Eric Gillette is such a beast.

Been listening to so much of Neal Morses' stuff, decided to rewatch the KaLIVEoscope and am so disappointed with Roine's concert mix for the bluray. Compare that with the mix that Rich Mouser did for the bonus songs at Tilburg, it's night and day. At least the entire Tilburg concert is on CD mixed by Mouser.
