Honesty, most people who don't like the horror genre don't like it because they don't watch enough horror movies.

Wow.

The only horror movie I like is Antichrist by Lars Von Trier, but I can't watch it again because who actively wants their soul violently raped?

But really, some people just don't like the genre. Like me.

I'm not much of a fan of Horror movies anymore, but each new movie that comes out looks stupider than the last, so that might have something to do with it.

I don't know if it would be considered a genre, but Tarantino movies.

I used to be so obsessed with his work, but lately when something of his comes out, I am just like "yeah, I will check it out when I get a chance" as opposed to anticipating a release and seeing it day one. His work is still decent, its just that me personally am not as obsessed

I didn't start watching horror movies until quite recently because I'm generally not a fan of being scared, and I often only see those that are highly recommended by people whose taste in movies I trust. So I only ever really see the good ones. What I have quickly discovered is that no, they're not all shit.

BTW, just because I don't watch horror films anymore doesn't mean there's no good or great horror films anymore.   I just don't connect to those films anymore.

Honesty, most people who don't like the horror genre don't like it because they don't watch enough horror movies. There's more to the horror genre than mainstream American horror movies you know? Mainstream American horror movies are usually among the worst the genre has to offer.

Maybe you should have said they watch the wrong ones, NOT they don't watch enough?

You did state that in the rest of your post though. Mainstream American horror is saturated with unoriginal nonsense; you're right. And it's inconclusive to judge a whole genre on a handful of movies. Recommend some better ones.

You could generalize to this and still be correct. :lol

I got burned out on horror long ago.  In general, horror films seem not to involve great writing or great characters, which are what I look for in films.  Also, I do not dwell on negative feelings/moods, which are predominant in horror films.

Which is not to say that there aren't ever any exceptions, or that some great horror films aren't still being made.  But most of them are crap (same as any other genre - MOST of it is crap).

And there may be great examples of non-American horror films, but frankly, for a genre like horror, I have no interest in reading dubbed English subtitles in a non-English film.  A genre like horror should focus on enough visual cues (lighting, mood, visual effects, etc) that I would want to catch all of that, and not miss anything by reading.  And English overdubs just suck in general.

That's just me.

Having said all that, I saw The Babadook and thought it was fantastic.  I also heard great things about The Witch and it's on my list.

Part of me thinks that horror films in general are just more interesting when you are younger and more likely to get scared by them.  Overtime (like most of the movies nowadays, not limited to horror) the movies all start to feel the same and I can't recall the last time a horror movie actually scared me.

Having said that, I haven't seen a single movie on NoseofNicko's list so it's quite (and honestly very very likely since my movie viewing in general has faded) likely that I just am not watching the right movies.

I loved horror when I was a kid and I love horror now at age 29.

When the really decent ones come along, that's awesome and on the flip side when a really shitty one comes along, I still enjoy them from the "its so bad, its good" angle.

Yes, although Star Wars seems to be the poster boy for the label. I don't know what the exact definition of it is, although wikipedia seems to slap it on just about anything set in space, which I don't agree with, so who knows.

Darth : My name is Darth Vader. I am your father. Prepare to die.

[Fight starts]

Darth : I admit it, you are better than I am.
Luke : Then why are you smiling?
Darth : Because I know something you don't know.
Luke : And what is that?
Darth : I... am not left-handed.

[Darth moves his light sabre to his right hand and gains an advantage]

Luke : You are amazing.
Darth : I ought to be, after 20 years.
Luke : Oh, there's something I ought to tell.........

[Darth chops off Lukes Right Hand]

Darth : Tell me.
Luke : Doesn't matter now....
