From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

I don't see how would they be classified as rock in any way.

I've always considered them post-surfer prog pop. Or was it post-pop surfer prog? It's very important.

I rarely do either, but I will occasionally bust out Pet Sounds, which is pretty darn good.

God Only Knows is a song I will randomly listen to somewhat often, and Kokomo pops up on my 80's playlist on occasion (shut it! :P).

One of my earliest memories is watching TV at I think 4 years old, watching the Muppets play Kokomo on some kind of tropical island resort at night. I have a soft spot for that song, however my other earliest memory is the video for that Fine Young Cannibals song She Drives Me Crazy, so it cancels out  :lol

There's almost zero "edge" in Beach Boys music, which makes it hard to call it rock.  I did own a greatest hits album.  And I remember hearing their music playing in the background during a sunset while floating around in a pool at a Florida resort and thinking that this is the perfect music for such a setting.

So is Bill Haley “rock”?

People have a habit of being very revisionist about these types of things. Just because something doesn’t fit into current definitions of a certain type of music doesn’t mean that it isn’t.

What do you guys imagine was in the “heavy metal” section of the local record store in 1980? Do you imagine it as a single shelf that only has Sabbath and Priest albums? I got news for you. Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent...they were there too.

Does it matter? It's all music.

Guy's made 85 posts here, and I bet a sizable majority of those are to start a new thread. It's getting a bit old now.

Yes, "rock" is part of "rock-n-roll", Bill Haley, and early Beach Boys are considered part of that genre. Some of the later BB's could be considered pop though.

I love it. The entire reason I frequent here is for “discussion”...these posts encourage discussion.

It wouldn’t be an interesting place to be if we just said “who cares” to every question.

I think it depends on your definition of "edge".   If you know the Brian Wilson story, they are every bit as "rock" as the latter day Beatles.   Entire orchestras in the studio; pianos on a bed of sand in the studio; late night sessions in bathrobes whacked out on hallucinogens...

I don't know; think that the late '64 to '67 period of the Boys is essential listening.  Kokomo is a good song in and of itself, but it's hard to listen to for me, because it's "Mike Love's Beach Boys" and I consider Mike Love a scumbag of epic proportions.  I'm not sure there is a single better example of an original member of a legendary band shitting on a legacy than what Mike Love has done to the Beach Boys.   I think we wouldn't even have to ASK the question of this thread if not for Mike Love.

If there was a more definitive album, yes.  I have to think about that more.   I already have three that are in mind for you (not Beach Boys), and they are ALL OVER THE MAP.  Prepare for massive mind expansion.
