Celebrating 42 Years of Rush with 42 Songs in the Finals!

As it turns out, the band is 42 years old this year, and the way my Survivor will work out, the Finals will total up to 42 songs in the ranking! How quaint! As usual, the Top 2 songs in each album will advance to the Finals, while the 3rd place song from each of the 19 studio albums will move on to the Consolation Rounds, where the Top 2 of that Survivor will move on to the Finals to get a second chance. In addition, the songs from the Feedback EP will be featured alongside the band's early B-Sides/Non-Album tracks, plus their first single "Not Fade Away"/"You Can't Fight It" (and many of these are easily available to watch on YouTube, even on the band's own channel).

I plan on running TWO ALBUMS AT ONCE for the majority of this survivor. Whether by design or by coincidence, it seems as though I can easily run two at the same time as nearly each pair of albums has the same number of tracks per album (Rush/FBN, SIG/GUP, CP/TFE, VT/S&A), or are one track off (COS/2112, PEW/MP, PRST/RTB). So to make this a bit of a speedier survivor, I will run TWO ROUNDS each day (or at least try to whenever I can remember to update). Hopefully you guys can keep up with everything!

Predictably so, the lengthy By-Tor has taken the top spot. Funny how By-Tor, birthed from a jam in the middle of "Working Man", also got first place like "Working Man"! Now if "The Necromancer" and "Xanadu" place first on their respective albums, that'll be weirder...

Looks like the opening track stays on top. Tight race there for 3rd, but I think it's how it would've turned out anyway (regardless of tie-breaker rounds). Now we move on into AFTK and the 2nd phase of the band's career, the PROG phase (well, prog-gier phase, as COS and 2112 were dabbling in their prog influences). These next four albums will certainly be interesting to see their results!

Predictably so, the album's 1st and 2nd tracks land in 1st and 2nd place, but both go on to the Finals while "Tears" gets another chance in the Consolation Rounds!

The band's first full-length instrumental song, and the album's closer, takes the top spot (as any exercise in self-indulgence would), but both it and "The Trees" get to go on to the Finals while the opening title track battles it out in the Consolation Rounds.

Both PEW and MP have begun, arguably their two most popular and well-known albums of the time, including a lot of radio hits that still get played on classic rock stations everywhere! It'll be interesting to see where these two album survivors go...

I forgot about "Run Willie Run", but collaborations will NOT be included, only songs written by, or performed by the entirety of Rush will be included, which is why I'm also including other early covers like "Bad Boy".

Looking at the above link, I only included the tracks listed after the band's first released single, which is why I neglected "Run Willie Run". However, according to that chart, those 11 songs were written in 1970, while according to the Wikipedia article, "Rush's official incarnation formed in May 1971 consisting of Lee, Lifeson, and Rutsey." With that in mind, the band really began with their first single.

This album came out during my birth year, oddly enough, but also happened to take a long time for me to get into when I was first getting into Rush, especially when I really liked the two albums surrounding it.

The first round for HYF is now up, and in a week or so, we'll wrap up the synth-era and move into the band's first album with Atlantic, and where they start to pull back the keyboards and gradually move towards a harder, more guitar-driven sound once again, but with some then-modern influences.

This ended up being a shorty, with only 5 rounds and 2 ties, but none of those ties prevented determining the top 3, so I decided to press on through them without tie-breakers. Not my ideal ranking, but I am glad to see "Marathon" on top, and "Mystic Rhythms" isn't so bad either.

First round of Presto is up, so I hope you guys are all ready for the Atlantic Years albums, and longer survivors now that we venture into albums with 11-13 tracks (save for RTB, which got away with only 10). As such, each album will run as long as 12 rounds, barring any tie-breakers.

Well, TSS stood firm and, by one vote, barely made the top spot. Both it and "Mission" advance to the finals while "Lock And Key" goes on Consolation.

The RTB survivor has begun, and it should prove to be pretty interesting. I always feel like the band's 90's albums are their least discussed, so I am hoping I don't lose too many more voters as we move along. We're rolling out about a dozen votes in Presto per round, so let's keep that going, folks!

And by ONE vote, "Headlong Flight" yields to the album's closing track, "The Garden", which takes first place! I'm sure there's a LOT of variations of ranking for this one, though, because the album is filled with so many great songs, so I'm sure not everyone will agree with this final ranking, but that's ok - I just think it means the album speaks to different people in different ways, and that's what makes it so great over-all!

You only have yourself to blame for the results by not participating! Every vote counts!!!

But seriously, yeah, I'll agree that SOME of the album results have been a bit wonky, but in terms of MY personal favorites, a lot of them ended up in the Finals, so I'm ok with the decisions we have all made as a group. With the consolation rounds starting, they'll be running for 18 days, so hopefully there's a LOT of participation to make the rounds a bit more interesting.

I was getting used to updating 2 albums a night, but from here on out, it'll be one round per day (unless I forget, or am too busy/tired from work to update that night), for the next 60 days. In about two months, we'll have crowned the Top Rush Song for the Rush Survivor!!!

Something for Nothing, Hemispheres, YYZ, Territories, Where's My Thing, Ceiling Unlimited, The Anarchist are the most egregious examples to me.  There are others as well but they are more understandable.

Agreed x1000 re Hemispheres & Ceiling especially.  I think Anarchist deserved a better shake but I can understand how YYZ got eliminated early, if only because that album has so many strong contenders.

Also, after the last round of the Finals, I will be running an Album Survivor, pitting the 19 studio LPs against each other, so that'll run for, at least, 18 rounds until we get a top album, so please look forward to that as we wrap up this Survivor Series.

After that, I plan on doing a Dream Theater Album Survivor as a warm-up to the DT Survivor proper, which I plan to start right at the New Year, and in the coming weeks, I'll be posting my home thread for that survivor, like this thread here, where I'll lay everything out as I plan to do it. I hope everyone will participate in that one too! I haven't been on the DT side of the forum much lately as I haven't really been into DT much (been spinning a lot of other new music from this year like Haken, Big Big Train, Marillion, Neal Morse, etc.), but I'll be sure to promote the DT Survivor for optimum participation and votes!

The Finals' Final Round's Results:
2112 14 (50%)
Xanadu 14 (50%)

With exactly 14 votes each, the final round ended in a tie (my worst nightmare lol), and so rather than do what might have been a pointless tie-breaker (only to be another tie), I've decided that both songs will win. It's not really much of an upset in my eyes, either, as both songs would totally be worthy of placing first, so I'm okay with a tie at this point. The final rankings will be updated in the OP!

And as stated in the final round's thread, I had already done an albums survivor, so that's all I'll do for this round of Rush Survivors, though I have done OTHER mini-survivors before, so if a few people are interested in any of the following, please reply here and maybe I'll throw a couple of these up over the next week or so before I gear up for my massive Dream Theater Survivor!

-The 'Fear' Series (a very short survivor - only 4 songs!)
-Rush album sectors (first 16 albums in four groups of four, then the last three albums - five groups face off)
-Multi-Movement Songs (All songs that have defined sections in them)
---Which would consist of each song having a survivor, so for "2112", there'd be 6 rounds to determine which movement was best. There would be 8 songs done, then I'd pit the top movement of each song against each other in a "Finals" sort of survivor. The 8 songs would be "By-Tor & The Snowdog", "The Necromancer", "The Fountain Of Lamneth", "2112", "Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyage", "Cygnus X-1, Book II: Hemispheres", "La Villa Strangiato", and "Natural Science".

If you guys are all Rush'd out, that's fine. This was a long one to do (and I suspect DT will be as long). I had a lot of fun doing this and I hope to run it again sometime in the future!

Marc, you did an excellent job with the Rush survivor. Perfect actually. I would be interested in any mini Rush survivor before the Dream Theater one, which will also be very cool!
