I've realized today that I will never have a definite answer to the OP. I voted SDOIT at this point in time.

I voted Scenes because every other release has something (big or small) that I could do without.

When Dream And Day Unite - Bad production, no James.
Images & Words - It's one of their sorter releases but besides that and the end of Pull Me Under it's flawless.
Awake - Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Falling Into Infinity - I didn't think there was anything bad here till I heard the demos...
Scenes From A Memory - Can't think of anything that hurts this perfect CD.
Six Degrees - The end of Misunderstood is about all that hurts this near perfect CD
Train Of Thought - Shit... can't think of any problems here... I guess Honor Thy Father could have used a guitar solo... but thats about it..
Octavarium - The Answer Lies Within's lyrics.
Systematic Chaos - It burns deep down inside of me...
Black Clouds & Silver Linings - Shit... no baddies here either.

Kinda surprised that Awake is at the top, I can't get into it. I think I need to take the time to listen to it in full.

1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2. Awake
3. Images and Words
4. Black Clouds & Silver Linnings
5. Scenes from a Memory
6. Octavarium
7. Train of Thought
8. Falling into Infinity
9. Systematic Chaos
10. When Dream and Day Unite

I would put When Dream and Day Unite a couple of spots higher because I think the music found in there is amazing. (I'm even a big fan of The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun, which lots of people seem to hate or just don't care for it), but the production is a huge let down for me and doesn't let me enjoy it that much. I also like Systematic Chaos a lot, but I think a lot of us forummers and DT fans would agree that as an album, it feels bland. There's some great stuff in there (ITPOE, TMOLS, Repentance), but the low points really bring it down.

Arbitrary Ranking Time!

1. Images and Words
2. Scenes From a Memory
3. Six Degrees (this and SFAM keep switching places on me!)
4. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
5. Octavarium
6. Falling Into Infinity
7. Awake
8. When Day and Dream Unite
9. Train of Thought
10. Systematic Chaos

Trying to order numbers 4-7 was really damn hard.

Yeah I think I'm finally able to rank all 10.

1.) Scenes From A Memory
2.) Black Clouds & Silver Linings
3.) Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
4.) Train Of Thought
5.) Images And Words
6.) Octavarium
7.) Systematic Chaos
8.) Falling Into Infinity
9.) Awake
10) When Dream & Day Unite

It should be noted that A Change Of Seasons is my favorite Dream Theater song (maybe favorite song ever) so the EP could presumably take a would be 0th spot.

SDOIT best captures everything that is DT.  :2metal:

Six Degrees for me. Its got a bit of everything + experimentation

I&W, SFAM and BC&SL aren't far off though.

But I still enjoy every single album they've released from WDADU to BC&SL. Each is a masterpiece and I love every DT moment ever written.

Yes, I am a fanboy

1)  Scenes from a Memory
2)  Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
3)  Octavarium
4)  Awake
5)  Train of Thought
6)  Black Clouds & Silver Linings
7)  Images and Words
8)  Systematic Chaos
9)  Falling Into Infinity
10)  When Dream and Day Unite

It actually took me a long time to do this.  1 and 10 are pretty set in stone, the rest are probably plus or minus 2.

Huh, Awake is winning? Didn't expect that...

I guess my ranking would look something like that:
1) Scenes from a Memory
2) Falling Into Infinity / Images and Words / Octavarium
5) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
6) Awake / Black Clouds & Silver Linings / Systematic Chaos / Train of Thought
10) When Dream and Day Unite

Couldn't bring myself to actually place some of the albums lower or higher than another. So... yeah. That's as excact as it gets. :P

I have voted for I&W, but I can't really decide which album is my favorite: Awake, SFAM or I&W. It changes every time I overlisten any of these albums, right now I love Images because I have listened to Awake and SFAM a bit too much lately  ;)

a year ago I would've been Awake or Scenes, but I just voted for Six Degrees - there isn't anything on the album I don't like... I guess that's true for Awake, Scenes and I&W, too, but there's something about Six Degrees for me recently. Damn those four albums are so phenomenal. For me, there is a significant drop off after that to the rest.

1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2. Scenes from a Memory
3. Awake
4. Images & Words

5. Systematic Chaos
6. Falling into Infinity
7. Octavarium
8. Train of Thought
9. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
10. When Dream and Day Unite

Train Of Thought.

Although recently I have jumped on the I&W bandwagon a bit and might consider it for second place. That and SDOIT are the top 3.

SFAM is by far my favorite DT album.

If I had to rank all of the albums it'd go like

(numbers 5-7 change a lot)

1. Scenes from a memory
2. Octavarium
3. Images and Words
4. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
5. Awake
6. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
7. Train Of Thought
8. When Dream and Day Unite
9. Systematic Chaos
10.  Falling into Infinity

But 9 and 10 are so far below the rest it's ridiculous.
