What Is Dream Theater's Best Album

When Dream And Day Unite
Images and Words
Awake
Falling Into Infinity
Metropolis Pt.2 Scenes from a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Train of Thought
Sytematic Chaos
Octavarium
Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Zantera

I've always had a thing for Awake.
Personally i think Images & Words doesn't compete to it, because of Pull Me Under, which is a bit overplayed.

Other than that, i do want to mention:
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Both disc1 and 2 are amazing
SFAM - which has grown on me, i need to listen to it more, haven't really heard it enough

My ranking would look something like this:

1. Awake
2. Six Degrees
3. I&W
4. Systematic Chaos
5. BC&SL
6. SFAM (as i said, i need to listen to it more)
7. Octavarium
8. Train of Thought
9. Falling into Infinity
10. When Dream and Day Unite
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

I'm so torn between Images and Words and Six Degrees...

As in, which one takes second place after Awake?

Awake is losing behind I&W even with my vote. Just one more vote on Awake will bring the salvation closer.

OperantChamber

Train of Thought has 7 votes!
:omg:

It gets my vote because it is the most focused album. It's dark, technical, crushing, aggressive, personal, epic, and a bunch of other cool adjectives.
Plus it's the most metal!

Dream Team

We have trolls among us, Awake never wins these polls . . . not saying it doesn't deserve to be in the running, but I've never seen it win.

Which album usually wins?

Are you serious? It's always between Images and Words and Awake.

hefdaddy42

How did I never vote in this before?

Awake.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I vote Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. One of my most exciting and rewarding musical experiences in my life.

youngaspiring

6 degrees. :metal

Closely followed by SFAM and TOT.

Awake is #1 for me.  It was the first DT album I was exposed to (sometime in 1996), but its status at the top does not rest on mere sentiment alone.  Additional factors include:
- near perfect combination of heaviness with technicality and progressiveness
- JP's best solo (Voices)
- JLB's varied vocal performance
- diversity: heavy songs & ballads; short songs & long ones; happy, soaring melodies & dark, disturbing tones; accessible at points & at others almost impossibly hard-to-wrap-your-brain-around
- some of their best lyrical work (Voices, SDV), as well as overall lyrical consistency
- the best instrumental
- squeezing the most amount of heaviness :metal out of a simplistic riff EVER (The Mirror)
- galactic cowboys are thanked in the liner notes
- lastly, as per my sig:

AWAKE HAS 5 LETTERS; JESUS HAS 5 LETTERS - CASE CLOSED.

Octavarium, that's the first DT album I heard, and that's what I like the most, closely followed by
BC&SL
SC
ToT
SDOIT
SFAM

Really? I always thought it was Scenes that was neck-and-neck with I&W. If not, I stand corrected.

I can only think of one song that has happy soaring melodies and that is Innnocence Faded.

Yes. Except I voted Images and Words. I hate deciding between the two of them...

Gadough

I know I'm in the vast minority here, but my favorites are Octavarium and Systematic Chaos. Voted for the latter because In the Presence of Enemies is my favorite DT song.

That´s cool. I think those albums still have a lot to offer.

Awake is not only the best album of DT IMO, but my favorite album of all time.

Ranking:

-Awake
-Images and Words
-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
-Scenes from a Memory (Sometimes I like it more than 6DoiT)
-Octavarium
-Train of Thought
-Black Clouds & Silver Linings
-Falling into Infinity
-Systematic Chaos (I have a curious thing with this album. I like almost all of the songs individually -Except from TMoLS and the voices part of Repentance, and IMO TDEN would be a lot better if it was an instrumental song- but I don't like the album as a whole. It's strange)
-WDADU

Kinda agree with u almost :D it's a verry good song, but I think Octavarium still is a little better, just a liiiittle

Zantera

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence has really grown on me, i think it's my favorite together with Awake now.

I mean:

Disc1 is very solid, and has lots of variety.
A heavy song like The Glass Prison, a dreamy song like Misunderstood, and Disappear - which is one of the most beautiful/saddest songs i've heard.

Disc2 features the best/most well constructed 42-minute song i've heard yet, and i'm really fascinated about the diversity in DT's music.
It's just great, a slow gorgeous ballad like Goodnight Kiss, but an insanely heavy number in The Test That Stumped Them All, when i played it in the car my other day, my dad also found this a bit interesting.
During one song you bring up your lighter, during the next you fucking throw the shit at someone.  :lol

Darkes7

Omg, this needs to be written down somewhere :omg:

I'll be doing huge re-listening of the entire discography in the summer and we'll see if my order changes, but for now I'm certain that nothing will ever beat SFAM for me, and I highly doubt any album will push Awake out of second place. Everything else... we'll see.
