I will say, in my own defense, that I didn't completely exclude older bands! The Beatles, Genesis, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Kansas, King Crimson, Megadeth, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Queensrÿche and Yes all released albums in the 1980s or earlier.

Stadler, I get what you're saying, and if you can give me a list of bands that I missed that you think are likely to be popular on DTF, I will add them to the poll. The sole caveat is that I apparently cannot enable people who have already voted to change their votes, which is frustrating.

Though apparently nobody likes Night Ranger.

Yeah I think the poll is based on the bands that get the most discussion around here. I'm not asking for Devil Doll to be put in the poll, since even though I love them, I'm one of like four people here who does.

Here are the ones I voted for btw:

Agalloch
Anathema
Avantasia
Ayreon
Between the Buried and Me
Coheed and Cambria
The Dear Hunter
Devin Townsend/Devin Townsend Project
Haken
Kamelot
King Crimson
Marillion
Nightwish
Opeth
Pain Of Salvation
Redemption
Riverside
Rush
Seventh Wonder
Sigur Rós
Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree
Tesseract
Tool
Transatlantic
Yes
Periphery
The Mars Volta

Well, besides being deeply wounded by the disrespect shown to Night Ranger, I just threw that name out there.  I wouldn't press you to put that name up there, because, well, I get it.  NR is the equivalent of Devil Doll in that respect.

But I think at a minimum the bands that the band has noted as influences and have covered in their day should be:

Elton John
Led Zeppelin
Journey
Black Sabbath/Ozzy
Deep Purple
Queen
The Who

And if you can't fit all of those, I think at a minimum Queen, Elton John and Deep Purple need to be there.

I don't see any need to include them, but whatever.

I mean, there's no downside to adding them besides it making the poll longer. And at least they're all pretty recognized bands. I just don't want to get into a situation where I add Obscure Prog Metal Band #1 and then everyone starts asking me to add all sorts of other obscure prog metal bands.

Interesting results so far. Didn't think we'd see Pink Floyd take the lead, though given that they're one of the most acclaimed bands of all-time, it makes some sense. Rush and Iron Maiden in second makes perfect sense to me, since those are two of DT's biggest early influences. And Wilson is not a huge surprise taking the lead among artists that began their careers after 1990, with Haken, the inspiration for this thread, in second.

Yeah we won't come to a result where everyone is happy. People seem to confuse this topic with a list of the most popular bands in history or something, which could lead to an endless process of adding new stuff. I don't think those last ones belong here but there's no harm in having them anyway.

Kinda surprised seeing The Mars Volta at only 2 votes, though it did come in a bit later and I would've voted for it too, it's still second to last place only passing Periphery.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

I'd be interested to see where these bands rank on each person's list. Like, Rush is one of the ones with the most votes, is that because everyone just loves Rush the most? Or is a lot of people like me, who like Rush enough to consider themselves fans, but wouldn't rank them all that high?

I dunno how to make that work in a poll, though. :lol

I guess, but that would only give you one vote. So we'd know everyone's favorite band, but not really how the rest of the groups stack up in comparison.

So far the 3 most popular options are Rush, Iron Maiden, and Pink Floyd. In many ways DT is a combination of those 3 bands.  :tup

Went with my Big 4 of bands.... IQ, Marillion, Yes, and The Who.

Rush and Floyd barely missed the cut. I remember us doing this a few years ago, Floyd ran it, and Pink Floyd came out the winner.

I wanted to vote Leprous, but they're not there.

Maybe we should let every member pick up to three bands, compile a list based on those bands and then let everybody vote. That way, you have an accurate representation of not only everybody's favourites, but also what other people think of those particular bands.

But I think at a minimum the bands that the band has noted as influences and have covered in their day should be:

Didn't Bosk just explained that this thread isn't about the bands who influenced DT, but about the ones that are discussed within the forums?

Did you read my post?   I GET THAT. I understand clearly that this is NOT about bands who influenced DT.  But, the thread IS about other bands that forumers like.   I am a forumer.  I am not 25.   There are many other forumers here like me who are not 25.   I am saying that it is not unreasonable that I share influences and bands with the band members.   I can accept that Night Ranger is not on the list (as much as I do love them, it was something of a joke), but if I like Dream Theater, who is influenced by bands x, y, and z, it is not unfathomable that I would ALSO like bands x, y, and z because of similarities of style, etc.  It is not unfathomable that other, younger listeners would say "Hmm, I like DT; and John likes The Who, maybe I would like The Who!" and listen to them.   And while it doesn't compare with world peace or Black Lives Matter or global warming, I felt like including a bunch of obscure doom-metal bands, and ignoring seven of the biggest bands in the world (six of whom are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and one that should be) is kind of keeping a narrow focus.

I deeply appreciate 425 changing the list and taking the suggestion for what it was.

425, you have nothing but my admiration and sympathy for taking on a thread like this. It's funny how so many people get up in arms over this bullshit when nothing was stopping them from making a similar thread governed by their own criteria in the first place and they expect you to psychically appease their finnickiness but can't even take the 1-2 minutes necessary to read the fuckin OP.

Okay, but let the vote decide.  I know for me, I can't honestly say I know what gets "discussed a lot" because I only focus on the bands I like or am interested in, and ignore the discussions of the bands I either do not or am not familiar with.  If you asked me, the only bands that get discussed here are Floyd, Rush, Queen, Kiss, Maiden, Muse, Metallica and Coldplay.

And, apparently, Night Ranger.  :)
