Oh what the hell. Here you go.
FINALLY. Thanks for your patience.
Lonestar: Kaipa - Our Silent Ballroom Band 10/10
Wow. Wow. Wow. This is seriously the more joyful epic I’ve ever heard. It’s definitely now in my top 5 epics. It starts off so ethereal and mysterious, and then that groove hits that remains throughout the entire piece. I LOVE that. The energy and joy is maintained throughout the entire piece. The instrumental sections sound like some of my favorite jazz fusion pieces with those thick crunchy chords. I LOVE the chord structures, so simple yet so complex. The vocals are amazing. It’s like a combination of Yes and Neal Morse. Seriously. The chorus at about the 15:30 mark I played about 100 times, because it’s absolutely euphoric. Bravo.
Bolsters: Edenbridge - Myearthdream 8/10
This was a solid epic but it didn’t reach to me like the others. After the first 10 seconds with that electronic synthy sound, much of it to me was “This is nice but I’ve heard it before” with the orchestra hits, clean female vocals. I really liked the French horns though. For some reason those really impacted me in this song, but much of it was just a lot of stuff I’ve heard before. I enjoyed the orchestral section, it was nice. There wasn’t anything that I really retained from more listens. It was solid, I did enjoy it, but the other submissions really resonated with me more.
Sacul: Paul Oldfield - Ommadawn Pt. 1 8.5/10
Why am I not surprised you submitted this. However, I can hear how this influenced a lot of World and New Age artists, and in your next roulette I’m sending you some stuff that I think you’ll dig. This song was very minimalistic at first, and kept evolving into different sections. The first section was very peaceful, the second was much more upbeat, and then faded back, my favorite section was near the end with the world vocals and those light arpeggiated chords by the keyboard. I did enjoy it, I need to listen to more of his music.
Big Hath: Spock’s Beard - At The End of the Day 9.5/10
What a great epic. Why I haven’t explored SB more is probably a question left unanswered, because there really isn’t an excuse. I do enjoy Neal Morse’s solo stuff, so obviously since he was still with the band at this point there is a lot of that. Lots of Lydian modal stuff since that’s what he does. The section following the first lyrics sounds a LOT like Genesis with the mellotron sound and organ with the horn solo. That made me smile. And then all of a sudden a jazzy section with an excellent electric piano solo. I liked that too. It’s like the 70s meets today. Nice stuff.
Kingschmegland: I am the Manic Whale - Circles Show Love 9.5/10
Yay guitar in 7! And then it sounds like some early 90s alt-rock (like collective soul)... and then the other instruments come in. Then the prog comes in. Then the edge comes in. It has it all. It’s an excellent epic. And then the SEVEN COMES BACK! The clean vocals remind me of IQ or Gabriel era Genesis, and then the tight harmonies remind me of Yes. It’s a solid very enjoyable epic, very well done.
So here’s where we stand now:
Lonestar: 97.5
Kingschmegland: 96.5
Big Hath: 96.5
Bolsters: 94
Sacul: 92.5
So It’ll be Lonestar vs. King vs. Hath. Good luck to you!
