This round had some songs that really grew on me, and many of you sent some great songs. There really wasn’t a clunker, but there were a couple that didn’t really click with me as much as the others. The bonuses did play a factor, but I think they may play more of a factor for the next round. I will start with those:
World Music: Yanni - Acroyali/Standing in Motion (Hath)
String: Bent Knee - Leak Water (king)
Brass: Tower of Power - Squib Cakes (Hath)
Woodwind: Thank You Scientist - Suspicious Waveforms (Hath) (favorite overall song so far, but that garners no bonuses
)
Instrumental: Joseph Magazine (lonestar) (I forgot the name of the song
)
Vox: Gunship - Fly for your Life (Bolsters)
Time Sig - Oceansize - Trail Of Fire (Tyrias)
Those will be factored with the totals.
OK now for the writeups:
Tyrias: Gorilla Rodeo - And the Devil May Care 7/10
This song was quirky and weird, and I really dug the groove the song had overall. There were moments I really got into the music. However, it was not consistent… this was another weird quasi-western feeling song at times, especially with the introduction and during a couple of interludes with the trumpet. It felt like a soundtrack to a modern day western movie. I’ve heard several songs like that and it’s never really clicked with me. The singer has a very unique voice though. I normally am not a fan of a voice type like that, but in this genre it works pretty well.
TAC: Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues 8/10
Hmm, wonder what genre this is:
All kidding aside, this is a solid blues track. I like blues music but have never really fully dived into it. This is SOLID. It’s not something I would listen to every day, but if I were to go to a club/bar and hear this type of music, I’d be sold. This is good. It’s not completely my cup of tea, but I have to give it up. He’s a solid guitarsman, I think he’s great. The second half of the piece there were moments I could definitely hear the Clapton influence.
Big Hath: Blue Food - Boogiemen 8/10
This is a song that on paper has all the elements I enjoy: a brass section, complex musicianship, solid singing. However, I just never got into it. It sounds like they are getting so into the funk that it gets in the way of the music and I just couldn’t ever get into it. It also had some moments, the musicianship was very impressive, it’s solid, I just didn’t get into it.
Evermind: Blackmore’s Night - Fires At Midnight (live) 9/10
This is a band (and genre) I’ve wanted to get more into, and I really should after hearing this. It’s very well done. Everyone is great. I LOVED the electric violin especially. The instrumental section at the end dragged on just a little long for me (I would have liked to have heard a few more vocals the 2nd half of the song to be honest). However, it’s extremely well done and I really enjoyed it.
Sacul: iamthemorning - Monsters 9.5/10
I loved the combination of the string quartet and the piano, especially the 1st half of the song. This sounded like a Tori Amos song. This was awesome. And then enters the electric guitars… this was great. I know this isn’t much of a writeup but it’s positive so I hope you like it. This is what you get for rushing me all of this time.
Bolsters: Sound of Contact - Pale Bue Dot 9.5/10
Electronic sound with a prog edge. This song has everything I enjoy. There are elements of Yes in the introduction. I like the harmonies in the vocals. The ambience of the music fits, especially with the title of the song being Pale Blue Dot, it has kind of a spacey feel (look up pale blue dot photo if you don't know what I’m talking about). The thematic material gets a little monotonous at times but it doesn’t really bother me, it’s basically what kept this song from being that 10/10.
Lonestar: Shattered Skies - Aesthetics 10/10
Ooooooo I love the intro and the vocals in this, and the lead up to the chorus is like OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…. This is GREAT. There isn’t a moment in this song I don’t enjoy. The piano in the 2nd verse provides a contrast to the first part, but it also leads into the next coming of the chorus. The almost soft sections and then BOOM part at the end with a loud wall of sound just works excellently. Thank you for this.
King: The Pineapple Theme - Shoot First 10/10
This song has a Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson air to it and it works out perfectly. It’s not feel good prog. It’s very dark themed, but with an edge. It’s not overly heavy, and has a driving force to it. And those changing time signatures… me likey.
OK. The moment of truth:
Lonestar - 87.5
King - 87
Big Hath - 87
Bolsters - 86
Sacul - 83.5
--------
Tyrias - 82.5
Evermind - 82
TAC - 81
Great job to the 3 who were eliminated, you guys send me some good stuff, which is why you made it this far. Thanks for playing!
OK, Round 10, the epic round. Please send these as soon as you can. Lonestar already submitted his because he’s going on vacation. The rest of you, try to get it to me in the next 24-48 hours if possible. The song should be at LEAST 12 minutes long. However, if you send me a 45 minute song of nothing but harsh noise (Sacul)... well you’ll see what happens I guess. I’m going out of town to a music conference on Sunday, so my availablility will be limited (I’ll try hangman but I may not have time to keep up with it, that’s what happened this week), but I’ll have some time to get listens in especially at night. If results aren’t posted by Saturday, don’t hound me because I honestly don’t know how much time I”ll have, but I’ll try to get them by next Wednesday for sure.
The top 3 will move on to the EP round. And then I’ll be done with this thing
