Favourite Films that were Box Office Bombs??

What films do you like that underperformed or bombed hard at the Box Office ?

I can think of

1. Scott Pilgrim VS The World

2. Hot Rod

Loved them both.

Scott Pilgrim is a good one. Blade Runner comes to mind. It wouldn't make my top15 movies, but in terms of a movie not doing well initially but earning more praise over time.

No my favorite but I realy liked No Looking Back by Ed Burns.

5 million to make, box office gross only  $250,000.

I honestly have no clue how much most of my favorite movies made, just not something I care a ton about. However, I looked up some just to add something to this thread.

1. The Fountain
2. Harold and Maude
3. Shawshank Redemption

Probably a lot more too since I like a decent amount of more artsy movies that make like no money.

John Carter was an excellent piece of Sci-Fi that absolutely bombed

3. Shawshank Redemption

^ That was the one that immediately sprung to mind. Though, I was surprised to hear that it had bombed initially. I remember leaving the cinema thinking "That was brilliant!", and everyone I was with thought the same.

I think it was word of mouth that made it a classic in the end.

That, and I guess Shawshank.

The Wizard of Oz was initially a box office bomb, interestingly.

I'll have to check to see how much my favourite movies earned. I know a lot of them were big (BTTF, Terminator 2 etc), but I'm sure plenty of my favourites were flops. :lol

Probably something by Kubrick or Kurosawa.

I think 2001: A Space Odyssey flopped. I'm not sure though.

Agree 100% on John Carter. I really wish it would have done better so they would have made the trilogy.

You did? I could have sworn you hated it. Glad I'm wrong!

There are definitely parts of Nemesis I really like. The more I watch it though, the less of those I find. I still hold that all the Picard/Data stuff was great.

Into Darkness is miles better than Search For Spock, Final Frontier and Insurrection.

Couldn't stand the 30-40 minutes of it that I watched before turning it off.

Not the right thread though since I'm pretty sure that film did fine.

What about Manhattan by Woody Allen? Was that a flop? Or did Allen just not like it personally?

Top Secret. "From the makers of Airplane!" sure didn't help it at the box office, but I thought it was a pretty original and funny flick.

And since somebody mentioned Woody Allen, I loved Deconstructing Harry. Outstanding premise and wonderful cast. The culmination of a guy showing up to receive an honorary degree from the college that kicked him out, whilst toting a hooker, a corpse and his kidnapped son is wonderful. If only I could have such style.  :lol

Top Secret! has its moments, but it couldn't capture the overall hilarity and magic that Airplane! did. I think the milieu of the 50's beach movie/musicals and the campy WW2 parody wasn't as strong as the disaster flick genre used for Airplane!

Yes...I love Insurrection.   Seriously don't get the hate for that.

There are personal things in the storyline that make it my favorite ST film....but (like Stadler and others point out) I am of the camp who recognizes the difference between "favorite" and "best"....

I agree. I also think the merging of the two genres was inspired.

And I'd never seen this before. The bookstore scene run backwards so you can see how it was actually shot. Damn fine work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czuC1LWcPMc

It had an amazing trailer and It was fun at the cinema...

But it's so blatantly a Wrath Of Khan..er...clone... It has way more steals in it than Into Darkness - which just copied the warp core scene.

Into Darkness it had a narrative point to it. Kirk saved Spock from the volcano so he could learn about what it takes to become a good captain - which he does when he sacrifices himself to save

the crew.

In Nemesis - they just stole loads of scenes which had no narrative point at all.

Why did he download all his memories into B4 ? Because wrath of khan. Why did they have a shootout in a nebula at the end ? Because Wrath of Khan.

Why did they mention Romulan Ale being illegal at the start for no reason ? Because Wrath of Khan.

Why is the villain a genetically engineered human who escaped a hostile desolate world and obtains a ship with a doomsday weapon on board ?

because wrath of khan.

Office Space is a good one.   Totally bombed in the theater.   Didn't catch on until the home video release.

That was a word of mouth thing for me. I had never heard of it until a friend kept on recommending it. I gave in and finally watched it - classic!

Though, I think it's best appreciated if you've ever worked in that sort of office environment. Which reminds me, where are those matches??  :lol

Why did they make John Harrison Khan?

I thought Insurgence was good; not great. Nemesis was a waste of time. As is often said, Insurgence is a 2 hour episode. Once you accept that the movie Picard will always be a completely different character than the series Picard it's fine. It works here because at the end he's defending the principles of the federation and is fairly aggreeable. In First Contact he's just a raving and drooling madman, a bit of a dick, to boot.

Never understood why John Carter bombed. Such a good sci fi movie
