Self explanatory. Both were in a similar genre, both were influential, both were quirky...

What do you think?

Prince.

Of their two respective monster albums, I prefer Purple Rain.

Billie Jean and When Doves Cry are two of the best songs ever, from any genre.

MJ was the undisputed King of Pop. Prince was the better musician and songwriter though.

I prefer Prince a fair bit over MJ, although both are great. MJ had a spectacular peak, but when it comes to quantity of solid material Prince has him beat pretty handily.

I disagree. Dangerous to me is MJ's best, most varied album.

As for OPs question, MJ for me, no question. Both are great artists though

Both extremely talented. MJ's legend became larger than life. He was an icons icon. Prince's talent was larger than life. Neither will be repeated. Amazing that they both lived during our lifetimes.

But Prince by far for me.

Rumor has it that he has thousands of finished unreleased songs stashed in that damn vault of his. If true, he created like the rest of us breathe.

I wonder if that is actually true, or just one of those rumors that gets started and then spread to pump up his legend even more.

I guess time will tell.

MJ. For me, his greatest albums - Off the Wall and Thriller - are among the best ever released. But there´s no album from Prince I love that much.

Dangerous and Xscape are great albums, too, by the way.

Expect a fuck load of "new" Prince albums hastily pieced together from unfinished songs and demoes. Possibly finished by other musicians and singers who may or may not be Prince.

I've seen quotes taken from interviews before his death, where people said that 70% of everything he wrote/recorded went straight into the vault and was never released.

The lack of love for MJ's Dangerous is...disturbing actually. It was his career high. It's his most ambitious album, drawing from hard rock to hip hop, gospel, and funk. Black and White, Will You Be There, and Remember The Time are his number one's, but songs like Give In To Me, Who Is It, Why You Wanna Trip On Me, and In The Closet are so complex and intricate, I think any fan of prog would appreciate what he did here. It may not be his most successful feat, but to me, it's his final hour.

Dangerous also was the first album as an adult that he produced. Off the wall, thriller, and bad were produced by Q. So it has a slightly different sound.

Dangerous is a bit too fillerish album. Well, all of his album has some fillers but this one is too much.

I wondered about that too.  But I did read about it on the Internet, so I'm pretty sure it is true.

As far as the poll, I went with the correct answer.

It may be a rumor, but it is completely believable. He was that type of person who just let the creative energy just flow, and he's always been dissatisfied with the record industry so I'm sure there are a ton of songs never released (that he felt were too good for release, or too out there)... He was also a perfectionist so much so that something the general public would think sounds amazing he may thought wasn't good enough for release.

Are you thinking of HIStory? Because I can't think of a filler in Dangerous! Besides Thriller, it's the only one out his ten solo records that I can listen to from start to finish.

Nope. Cant Let Her Go Away, She Drives My Wild, Keep the Faith, Gone too Soon...
And there isn't one song as good as Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Billie Jean or Smooth Criminal.

Considering that Dangerous is your fav MJ album, you will disagree with me but i'm just explaining why people don't like it as much as Off the Wall, Thriller or Bad.

Not really a fan of either. That said, MJ was amazing in his own ways, but I gotta give the nod to Prince.

As for the discussion about how much stuff is or isn't in the vault, this article might give some insight:

As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

IMO Dangerous just isn't that good at all. Just okay. Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad are the only really good MJ releases for me.

Ah, but I love those songs lol. I will agree there isn't a single song off of Dangerous that it better than those that you listed, considering his BEST song is on HIStory....However as a whole album, start to finish, is one of his finest. I personally rank them as

1. Dangerous
2. Off The Wall
3. Thriller
4. Bad
5. Got To Be There
6. HIStory
7. Invincible
8. Ben
9. Forever Michael
10. Music & Me

I'm not including his post humous albums because most of the songs were incomplete

I like it too, but i am with the consensus with this one.

Only thing i'm not with the consensus about MJ albums is that Bad is my favorite (where Thriller and Off the Wall are the usual picks).

I'm shocked that MJ is even in the running, much less winning.

MJ was a pop icon, but he can't even clean Prince's shoes.
