exist: i dig the general sound of this album and i think several of the songs are pretty "there" (tracks 1, 2, 6 especially) but there's also a... dryness to a lot of this where stuff kind of feels lacking in depth or moments where they get a bit too repetitive. track 6 is probably the best track because there's this escalating build throughout that leads to some moments with a ton of weight & track 2 has this great bit close to the end that is a satisfying climax to the track. but the album also has a tendency to meander. it hasn't quite clicked with me but it's a damn interesting album nonetheless that i do wanna spin some more
leprous: no way around it, biggest disappointment of the year for me. tbh if i hadn't already purchased it before the first full listen i gave it, i would not have purchased this. captive in particular is leprous' worst song. no contest. some moments of the title track are pretty bad too. leashes and the last milestone are both just kinda boring. the rest of the tracks, they have their moments. booneville is decent when it gets loud. stuck has a decent groove to it, about the only track here that does. from the flame has a good chorus. illuminate is... really boring too actually. mirage is prob the heaviest song so it's by default alright. coma is a better frantic song than captive but feels a bit too repetitive. the weight of disaster is probably the best song here but it's basically just down pt. 2. really the general failing is that there just aren't enough good grooves or enough emotionally potent moments and the entire feel of the album is really dry despite all the strings and einar's wailing. i don't know why they made a rock album when they wrote a metal album.
xanthochroid: on its own this is definitely not as good as their first album. but it's a bit hard to judge without the second half completing this. the first act seems to be focusing more on the folkier side of their sound though there's certainly some metal there regardless. the buildup from track 7 into 8 is great & the way that closer just kicks off so intense, i love it. track 4 has a lot of nice quiet moments but i wish the heavy stuff went on longer. i do think tracks 2 and 5 are a bit too alike, i don't know if both were needed. a lot of these songs don't really feel too cohesive but with the way the album is structured as a concept album i can forgive it a little, especially since most of the music sounds good. hopefully i'll have a more cohesive opinion once act ii drops in a month, lol

Ohshit realised I haven't posted here in quite a while, so I'll quickly write about my favs:

Promised Land: Didn't really expect much from this and got very surprised. I like this kind of more atmospheric, dark approach to music and this is a phenomenal record. Love the sax here.

King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime: Not as good as Angel Dust, but still a damn solid album. Just wished the production was better. Liking the heavier approach and the subtle jazz vibes.

Science Fiction: It ended up clicking with me, and I love it. Many feels, amazing atmosphere. Among my favorites of the year.

Age of Adz: Sufjan going electronic and orchestral? Ohboy, yes, this is really good. Complex and varied and very creative. Last song is this huge, epic 25 min track and it blows many prog epic out of the water imo :P

1. Outside: I'm not really a fan of 70s Bowie, but I love Blackstar. So took me a while to get around this one, his '95 album and damn. It's probably his most experimental, ambitious one - very long concept album, quite rock but also electronic and industrial, even delving a bit into avant-garde jazz. I'll admit it hasn't aged very well, but it's quite a solid album I'll definitely revisit.

Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaus: With this I've finished exploring Sigur Rós discography and what a beautiful record this is. Kinda in the vein of Takk but more straightforward and pop. Feels like a summer album, very playful and lovely. Ára bátur might be one of their best songs.

The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues: Time to start exploring more of the band's output, beginning with this one. Heavy and chotic as hell but really entertaining. Love those crushing riffs. Very fun at times. Solid.

Missa Atropos: Also been exploring Gazpacho's work. This one was very lovely and atmospheric, feels like a great entry point for new fans. Most songs are simple and short but they're really good. Their other albums bring some weird instruments and traditional folk music.

Evil Empire: Pretty cool record. Might not feel as fresh as their debut nor as refined as The Battle of Los Angeles, but lots of catchy songs, great riffs, and cool weird guitar sounds. Probably a bit too long.

Akuma no Uta: Very surprised with this one, kinda mixes most of Boris' styles into one album: the crushing, droney metal of Feedbacker, the catchy riffs of Heavy Rocks, and the punk energy of Pink. Excellent stuff, recommended to anybody wanting to get into the group.

Also this last week I started listening to the last roulette albums I had pending, should take me no more than 4 week to catch up with them :P

Been listening to this for the past week, I'm really loving it. I was kinda scared the whole album would be in the mainstream rock style of some of the singles but that luckily isn't the case. The album is filled with really great moments and big choruses. I really love the little Alan Watts pieces in between the songs too.
