I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Decided to finally listen to this band after seeing all the praise this album got in a The Dear Hunter facebook group. And wow, I'm amazed, I love the generally vibe a lot, and some parts are way more epic than I expected from an Indie-rock band  :omg:

only one listen so far, and it was mostly on in the background (which for some reason helps me get into albums - I'll have to explore that more), but I thought a couple of the early songs were pretty decent and maybe a couple more near the end.

How's that for some critical analysis?!

so you're saying i should check it out, heck

oh lemme do this while i'm here

nostoc: there are good ideas here. but one the vocals sometimes really suck, two the album feels a bit samey at points & the good ideas get lost in a kind of bland chugfest, three the middle of the album is really unmemorable. like i listen to the first track and a half and then zone out and then figure out where i am during the 6th track where it starts getting good again. oh there's one bit in track 4 that's memorable but that's about it. i'm sort of wondering if i really need to give this a proper listen without any distractions at all and see if it will click because there are moments here i really do like a lot and the first & 6th tracks are both pretty consistently good but the rest ehh, leaves a lot to be desired
ny in 64: got what i expected, which is solid but not particularly memorable proggy post-rock/metal stuff. a bit better than their first release, maybe, by a little, but not that much different and not that interesting as a whole. was never huge on this side-project though, it's just too clean, it's like the nicer riffs of eotw that got cut in favor of better ones for the albums. it's the prettier el drugstore. meh.
tetrafusion: some of this is generic progwank but the two longest tracks are actually both quite good (though they do devolve into the progwank a little). and echo chamber and 10,001 are both pretty solid tunes too. really the only boring stretch of the album is the three tracks between the two longer tracks, all of which are unmemorable and that instrumental is honestly pretty dull to boot. so ehh. overall i like it but it won't be making my year end top 10 by any means, probably not even top 20

Personally, I thought it was tripe.  Bland as shit.

TBH that is how I think of them, but with my health troubles recently I need some blander music. I've been playing a lot of Nelson.
I've been struggling at times with heavier stuff.

the hirsch effekt: easily an AOTY contender, this is just them basically keeping up the same level of quality they've previously adhered to while still sounding fresh and creative as heck. i don't know if this is quite their best, it's about on the same level as Agnosie and maybe a slot higher but not quite at Anamnesis' level. But heck. What does it all matter. I'd put every one of their albums between the 8.5-9.5 range and scoring a very solid 9 even once is an impressive feat by itself. the three song run at the start is easily my favorite part but the rest doesn't disappoint either. the last two tracks are maybe the weakest - lysios is unsurprisingly a bit too drawn out at points - first five minutes can be a bit one-note and the song coming to a halt at the 10 minute mark for a bit breaks up the pace a bit too much as well, and the last song doesn't feel quite satisfying as a finale like datorie does on anamnesis. but hell. that's nitpicking.
lorde: this is such a different album from pure heroine but it's still pretty dang good. a lot of the singles ended up being my favorite tracks even if i wasn't too hot on them at first, though i think the absolute highlight of the album is the stretch from the louvre thru hard feelings - the last of which may just be her best track, and liability isn't far behind either, really beautiful stuff. a few tracks i'm not huge on as a whole - homemade dynamite and loveless are both pretty lacking in substance - and a few tracks i half like, half meh - writer in the dark, supercut, sober II - but overall still a damn fine pop record
white ward: the big issue i have with this is that the songs feel like they're lacking in identity a little bit, even with repeated listens i can only really identify a few parts of each track on their own, aside from the short all-jazz interlude. but holy hell. the sound of this record. is just wonderful. some of the best-integrated sax metal i've heard yet and with a creative spark to keep it instrumentally interesting throughout. some electronic vibes, a lot of black metal influence, it all meshes well to make a unique but cohesive album. definitely still wanna keep spinning this one a while yet

as always since it's the first set of albums i ended up handpicking a few of the ones i was most excited about and they definitely delivered. can't say i'm gonna be quite so positive in my next batch of these reviews because malina is among them and it has as of yet not grown on me much at all since my first listen. a few tracks have gotten worse, even. so look out for that  :corn

Caligula's Horse - In Contact: I'm surprised that there isn't more discussion about this album, and even more surprised there is no band thread. I've been waiting anxiously every since it was announced and it's even better than I hoped. Every subsequent CH album has topped the previous imo.

The Contortionist - Clairvoyant: This is just absolutely beautiful. Early favorites are Godspeed, title track, and Monochrome.

I feel strangely honored to be following up a post from Sir Walrus Cauliflower.
