Ulver - The Assassination of Julius Caesar

Reminds me of Anathema and Alcest, I highly recommend.
If they were synthpop bands I guess :P

Yeah, they're a little more into electronic style than the quoted ones, but still have the ambient/sad/introspective vibe...
And if you consider the 180º shift in the sound style through the years, from black/doom/whatever metal to a more progressive/ambient/melodic/post rock vibe, the similarities only get bigger...

I would actually say overall that Anamnesis is the better album but both are great & I'm definitely looking to pick up their debut soon now

Anamnesis has the fantastic run of Irrath/Ira/Datorie so... yeah

Gods, I love that album.

I remember hunting high and low to get that Valentine back in the day - in the end a bloke in the record store heard me asking after it and offered to trade me something for it.  That was the only way (pre-internet) that I could get it.

One of the better "wimpy" albums.

I lent it to a friend who later on claimed to have lost it. He said he lent it to his brother and his brother left it somewhere - or some bullshit like that. I went nuts trying to find it until I befriended someone who owned an independent record store. He ordered it for me. This was years ago. I've since lost it. Gods, I hate this story because it kills me. When we moved before my daughter was born (while I was still married), a box of my CDs went missing on moving day. Not only did I lose a lot of good regular CDs, but I lost hundreds of my Dream Theater bootlegs that I had archived on blank DVDs. I had close to a thousand bootlegs of theirs at that point. I digress...

The Valentine CD is awesome. I also loved the Hugo and Open Skyz CDs.

OK this is way more consistent than Heavy Fruit, still not a huge fan of this band but some of the songs are really good

Mostly yesterday

people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Has become a personal favorite of mine in the Mark Kozelek discography lately. Some of his best tunes. Between Days, River, Void, Cruiser, so much amazing stuff.

Billy Bragg - Talking With the Taxman About Poetry
Eloy - Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes

I'm surprised more people here aren't aware of Eloy. Anyone who enjoys WYWH era Pink Floyd should really enjoy this German band.

Well... it's definitely no To Pimp A Butterfly. He kind of did away with all the cool jazz and funk influences and unexpected changes in direction and made an album full of pretty straigtforward songs. I'm curious to see if my opinion will change after more listens but at first two listens I'm a little dissapointed, it's almost a bit boring at times.

Also what did they think when making this album cover  :lol
