this is alright but maybe a bit too over-the-top cheesy to listen to in one sitting tbh
i bet evermind would like this even with the growls

unrelated: i actually need to revisit that primordial album i feel like i was unfair to it because of listening circumstances

Kid A: Yeah this finally clicked with me. Such an awesome album.
Free: Kevin and Jim Matheos go a bit more electronic than the first OSI, trying to get a more unique sound (their debut sounded a bit to Porcupine Tree). And they kinda succeed, but half of this is unmemorable so...

Geisterfaust: Bohren at their most hipster slowest, droniest. Interesting album, but wished the sax had more presence here.
Super Mario Galaxy OST: It's been a while since I last listened to it, and some tracks aren't so good outside their original context, plus a few songs a bit cheesy. Still an excellent record.

I tried listening to this again last week. I don't know why I find it so hard to get into. I mean, it's not as bad as Night on Brocken, but I just can't seem to find any love for it.

this album is... uhh. for one it feels really incohesive. the first four tracks alone, we get: a standard prog rock song, an adrenaline mob b-side, a funk rock track, and a ballad.
and the general sound of the album... is very pleasant, very unchallenging.
which i just don't care for. it doesn't feel like they're pushing any boundaries anywhere, just making music that fits the mold of the genre they're in. or whatever genre they're trying to play. it changes.
the constant here is that this is all very poppy and straightforward, though. cosmic symphony already gave me that vibe on its own, it's basically a poppy prog rock song followed by a singer-songwriter ballad (which is to say it's two songs on its own) but pretty much all the other tracks fit that mold. sure they show off a bit but the songs feel very basic and underwritten.
listening to king crimson's red has really made me appreciate how challenging and off-kilter they were for the time, and that album is still kind of its own thing even by today's standards. it definitely pushed the genre forward though. that's just what this album is missing. any reason to exist.

of course, i only listened to this once, but it made me think a lot despite being very unmemorable

Basically my thoughts on that album, and I really loved the previous one they made, which was just pop/hard/alt rock music with no prog at all. It sounded so fresh and unpretentious to me, and Second Nature just disappointed me very hard  :'(
