even moreso than the synergy between the instruments, i think this works because of the production. it's organic and warm, as opposed to the stiff robotic production a lot of technical metal tries to use. the end result is that this album has - gasp - atmosphere, and that just makes it a lot more interesting to listen to

but also because these guys just play off each other really well. there's no "prominent instrument" here, the guitar, drums, and bass all play about an equal role in every track and it's great

pretest still blows though lol so they're only 1 for 2

Haven't listened to the live stuff yet, but taking the studio disc as an album on its own, you can see why they felt the need to tack something else on to it. The first two Cream albums have some average stuff, but there's enough great stuff and the albums are structured in a way that they flow nicely and hold up as great albums. This is a real mixed bag, some great, some good, and some pretty poor songs, with no real sense of direction as an album. You can hear that the band were almost out of ideas and just biding their time.

On my third listen of this, and it's still just odd. I'm gonna continue to hold judgment on how good it actually is.

I never get sick of those 2 albums.

Yeah, they are very good.  I really can't say the same for Peter and Gene's; they just didn't seem to compare to Paul/Ace.

I like the change of pace with Gene's but those two are class. Paul's made top 10 in my top 50.

I'm having trouble getting into the new Mono tbh. It's not bad, but it feels very safe and the title track is pretty meandering. We'll see how I view it after having seen them live next Thursday I guess.

i listened to a bit of it and while i appreciate that they're sort of going for a more intense sound, and it kind of works, it's still not really breaking any new ground for them really

It just feels rather pedestrian after the brilliance of Rays of Darkness in my opinion, that's all. That album is everything that I want heavier, more intense Mono to be, and Requiem for Hell just kinda feels meh in comparison to that.

It's a toss up between this and Back For The Attack for me. BFTA probably shades it

ironically the biggest problem this album seems to have is that it is actually pretty formless. both the songs and the album itself don't have any real arc to them, they just go on and then end. it's like they know how to write cool music, but not really how to write a song.

that being said the music here is solid. a lot of nice guitar and bass work and some solid drums too but the snare sound is total trash and i don't know why they went with that

i only bought this because it was kinda cheap tbh which is how i've made a lot of my worse decisions this year, i should stop
but like i don't hate this but i doubt i'll ever love it either

Definitely their most experimental record. Despite being instrumental, I really like this one.

I'm not a big fan of Bath, but I'm liking this one more - no growls or mindfucking chaos, some nice... atmospheric... chamber... experimental... rock? This goes many genres, but it's more pleasant-sounding. Also lovely violins.

if this was just a gimmick album it probably wouldn't work but a lot of the tunes here are also pretty cool and prooobably wouldn't work as well if it was just guitar instead of sax

so yeah, i'm pretty on board with this, hopefully the appeal doesn't wear off on relistens though

i appreciate that they took a different direction with this one, but it kind of means this doesn't really stand out in any real way. solid enough though.

This album's held up pretty well. Still great all the way through (barring the second track which is somewhat balls).

Only listened to this two or three times, but it's pretty fantastic.

I used to listen to this album quite a bit a very long time ago. I returned to it a few weeks back, and was surprised about how random everything seemed to sound to my ears.  :lol
