Cool, hope you find something interesting :tup

Ye NIN ain't for everybody, but I guess you can also go with With Teeth for something very straightforward, or Ghosts for some very experimental, mostly improvised stuff.

I was also about to recommend you some Porcupine Tree, but I think you ain't into Wilson's stuff :P

Dream Theater - Images and Words, Scenes From A Memory. Worth a listen if you haven't heard them

Sonata Arctica - the Ninth Hour

I hear astonishing clouds and falling chaos is a popular dream theatre album, is it really that good?

I know what you mean about The Blackening by Machine Head by the way. I can't think of a straight up metal album in the last 10 years that tops that for me. It was monumental for me!!
Yeah, that album was an event. (And I don't even think it's their best album).

Really?? What  do you think is their best? Burn My Eyes would be #2 for me followed probably by Unto the Locust.
Burn My Eyes is more or less my favourite metal album. It perfectly captures what I'm describing when I talk about the mid-ground.

I was also about to recommend you some Porcupine Tree, but I think you ain't into Wilson's stuff :P
Yeah, I liked In Absentia and Deadwing when they came out, and for whatever reason fell out of love with them hard.

Did you try Fear of a Blank Planet or The Incident? Both are quite heavy and excellent records imo  :P

I checked out a few songs from Fear. Don't remember listening to anything from The Incident.

Working on my list, some albums from the past 24 hours or so:

Never properly checked this out til now. It was good, but a bit light and fluffy and sugary. Gonna give it another chance though.

Musically very cool, never heard punk sounding so varied and structurally interesting, but way too screamy.

Really wanted to like this, as one of my favourite bands is good friends and inspired by these guys, but it gets very samey after a few songs.

I had no idea this dude was a folk guy, or I might have checked him out sooner. This was very good, and very intriguing, I definitely need to listen to this one more.

Agreed with Fluffy, that album is great but vocals aren't really varied so it gets monotonous. But Worm of The Senses, New Noise, and Tannhauser are fucking awesome tracks  :metal

Earlier, Marillion's Clutching at Straws. Now, a choral work by Sir Edward Elgar.

making a decision between these two, and, i think their more recent one just seems better in general. there's more synergy between the instruments, a bit more breathing room, more atmosphere. the only thing it has less of is... runtime

but for something like this 35 minutes might be a better runtime than 45 tbh, so

vaguely related but much less compelling. instead of instrumental synergy it seems like everything goes off in its own direction, with guitars especially just being noodly and shreddy to a rather pointless degree

i mean, it's not awful, it's listenable, but it's not that compelling

i checked this out like a year ago and thought it was "okay" then and i think it's "okay" now. kinda have some cool stuff going on but the album feels a little one-note and i'm not a fan of the vocals really.

Yep.   Wouldn't seem quite so blatant if the lead guitarist wasn't aping John Sykes so bad.

maybe because i have a slight headache atm but this one isn't doing much for me. seems a bit too guitar-focused and again just missing the instrumental synergy of their recent release. the atmospheric stuff in the last track is kinda cool though. it's far from bad.

Both for the first time! So much Jørn Lande and Bob Catley... Not that that's a bad thing!

And thank God there's a mention of computers on this Ayreon album.
