this is immediately much more interesting and satisfying than in the court of the crimson king.
like wow, i love the dissonance here a lot but there's still solid songwriting tying everything together and a hell of a lot of fun jam bits

listened to all but the omnio tracks.
this is... fine. not particularly interesting, preferred their recent release to it, but, fine. just not very memorable on first listen.

i think i've made myself accidentally really want one of these, but i don't know which.
1. both cheap as heck on amazon and import cds
2. both pretty cool
3. both have their pros and cons; bass is better on the first, guitar better on the second, overall sound quality better on the second but drums way better sounding on the first, a bit more to the latter but that could mean less tightness (and probably does). at this rate i might get both eventually e.e

Yeah the new Thy Catafalque is great. Luke, check out Sgurr, you'll love it. :metal

You must not listen to a lot of metal.

The genre's offered almost nothing of interest to me in recent times. So yes.
Well I think we can recommend you some good recent stuff if you want :P
I'm working through my list at the moment and listening to numerous new albums/bands a day most days, so feel free to recommend anything.

pretest is probably one of my least favorite purchases this year but it seems like these guys have time to redeem themselves yet, since i dig this quite a bit

didn't listen to all of it though but. it's just. crazy technical stuff in an interesting way. guitar, drums, bass. doing whatever, not giving a damn about what you think.

i've also been listening to el drugstore - plague ship a lot recently, which hits a lot of the same notes, though that's more focused on achieving the maximum amount of dissonance, whereas this has a bit more groove and atmosphere to it (but only a bit)

What's what you like the most in your metal?
I think of the metal I like as the "mid-ground".

I don't like power / symphonic type stuff. Even Iron Maiden is too far in that direction for me. And the vast majority of prog metal. The whole operatic-inclined vocal style of this kind of stuff isn't for me. (DT are a glaring anomaly and a case of lucky timing).

And I don't like anything that goes too far over into extreme metal, though some of my favourite stuff gets very close to it, but remains palatable based on some catch. But generally speaking, death vocals, black metal vocals, or "I can't do anything like singing, so I'll just scream every single word monotonously" vocals (mathcore/metalcore?) won't go down well.

I generally enjoy a mix of the stuff in between, metal bands where people actually sing, or aren't overly harsh. I liked some thrash, some groove metal, some nu-metal, alt-metal. These days, I really like stoner and sludge type stuff. In my experience though, those subgenres are all gone, or have been treading water since the early 2000s.

To be honest, I think the "mid-ground" I'm describing doesn't exist anymore, or if it does, I can't see it. After about 2005, the bands that might have fit in it became either more power/classic metal-leaning, or brought aspects of more extreme metal into their sound, too much for my taste in both cases.

Have you tried bands like Baroness?

I'd also suggest:

Barn Burner
Clutch
Volbeat

Good chance you've heard them but I know nothing about the bands you like.

I've checked out Baroness several times. They're okay.

I know of Clutch by name, and was planning on giving them a proper listen in the next wee while. I don't associate them with the past ten years though.

Ok, fair point. So are you looking for good new bands over the last ten years or good albums released over the last ten years? Clutch's latest album was great by the way  :metal

Cool, I'll remember that when I look into Clutch.

I guess either. I have liked the occasional metal album in the last ten years, but nothing springs to mind as a brilliant album. And there is practically nothing by new bands I care for at all.

I know what you mean about The Blackening by Machine Head by the way. I can't think of a straight up metal album in the last 10 years that tops that for me. It was monumental for me!!

Some straigforward (kinda) metal I can think of:
Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition
Alter Bridge - Fortress or Blackbird
Destiny Potato - Lun
OSI - Blood
Orphaned Land - All is One

Some stuff that leans more towards the experimental:
David Maxim Micic - Bilo 3.0 (you really have to check this one)
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
Obsidian Kingdom - A Year With No Summer
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandoras Piñata
Obsidian Kingdom - Mantiis

Also not a recent album but you should definitely check Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile, fantastic album.

I just got into Mastodon in the last couple of weeks.  Last night I listened to Crack the Skye with my good headphones.  Wow, what a progressive monster!  Listening felt like going on a journey.

dysrhythmia - pretest

there's some decent tracks in the first half (bastard, and just go, heat sink) but the rest of the upbeat tracks range from "ehh" to "awful" (my relationship is gaaarbage)
and the two slower atmospheric tracks have barely any atmosphere and are just so booorriiiing
it's not like the worst album ever but after the first 20 minutes I lose all interest in the rest

I've checked out about half of those albums at one point or another. I'll listen through them all (again) though and see what happens.

I actually bought The Fragile some time ago, and had The Downward Spiral as well. Both were okay, but I rarely sought them out, and when I did put them on, I found myself looking for something else to listen to after four or five songs.

Really?? What  do you think is their best? Burn My Eyes would be #2 for me followed probably by Unto the Locust.
