My friend had that White Sister album on cassette. I really liked it at the time but for the life of me can't remember what they sounded like.

Dream Theater - The Astonishing.

First time really listening through it since they toured it.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I still really enjoy it. I like the change of pace and the more relaxed nature of it. I don't take it seriously but it's fun and DT aren't usually that 😀

Dann Huff is all over that Michael W Smith compilation album.  Some good stuff there if you're at all into the CCM scene.

That's the book on neo-classical metal closed right there. Did anyone contribute anything else to the genre after this? Yngwie was god. Shame he became a clown.

My versions of 'Hear In The Now Frontier', the 'best ofs' I and II, and Q2K by Queensryche.
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

The early albums? I don't hear anything that isn't there on these two albums. Anything in particular I should listen out for? I only have Twilight In Olympus of the early stuff. Later stuff is more prog metal to me.

I don't actually know too much neo-classical besides them so I wouldn't know. I was more just throwing the name out there because it was more well-known & I figured there'd be at least some new neo-classical stuff you'd see. :dunno:

That said, of the earlier albums, I think Twilight In Olympus is the weakest. This is my ranking for all the SX albums I've heard.
1. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
2. V: The New Mythology Suite
3. The Damnation Game
4. Self-Titled (I actually thought it had a lot of good moments but was just brought down by a bad mix)
5. Twilight In Olympus

oh crap i never did this for these ones

keelhaul: this is the third album i've got from these guys and as with the other two none of the songs really stand out but the sound as a whole appeals to me. and there are less vocals on this one too which is also cool. also the last two tracks are awful and pointless and i don't even listen to them but aside from them the rest is cool stuff yeah
progenie terrestre pura: i don't know if this is better or worse than u.m.a. but i do like it a lot, it's a bit more diverse while still having a pretty solid throughline to it & a lot of cool moments. one of the better black metal releases i've heard this year for sure
the thirteenth sun: i dunno what to say about this other than that it's some solid and pretty diverse prog metal. also the bass is mixed high and i dig that. but yeah it's got a lot of different styles but doesn't feel "wacky" or anything, it just melds everything together pretty cohesively. the vocals are a bit weak though. but in general yeah, i dig

right now:

this is another of those weird cases where i dig the album in general but my favorite moments of this heavy, intense metal album are the quiet moments driven by atmospheric guitar and bass grooves. i dunno why, this band does that kind of moment well it seems. the metal stuff is cool too, got a bit of a rockin' egde to it at times and a more intense sound other times, and all the songs are pretty damn long too lol. yeah i might give this a relisten & might end up picking it up. i know i listened to another album from these guys before but i don't remember liking it as much as i am liking this one right now

Great album. So many friends of mine were like "They're shit, they're emo" etc etc. They were an easy target for people like that but they were a great band. Most of my friends eventually ate their words and admitted they were pretty good though  :lol
