Evening all. Went to a charity beer and food event with my aunt and uncle tonight at their church. Ate, drank, and won some free hockey tickets before we left to go to dinner. Also got a bottle of grappa that my uncle and his friends made. All in all a fairly successful evening.

There's a live event in NYC in a couple weeks that I'm considering going to. Leaning towards skipping it though because I've been spoiled by going to both Takeover: Brooklyn events and I feel like a non-televised house show will be underwhelming in comparison. Also, I've got a lot going on as far as entertainment (stand up comedy each of the last two nights, plus again in a couple weeks, Thank You Scientist show in December, and Cruise to the Edge in February), can't go to 'em all.

I'm sure a non televised show would still be good, but you could definitely give it a miss and not regret it given the other shows you've been to.
Over here you gotta take all the opportunities you can of course. That goes for seeing bands too.

Yeah, makes sense. I'm definitely spoiled living right outside NYC. I remember being so bent out of shape when Flying Colors was touring behind their second album and was only playing in Philadelphia (about 90 minutes from me) and not in New York

First world problems, huh? Most venues take us about 45-60 minutes to get to.

Yeah, first world problems. It's about a 25 minute bus ride into the city from my house, and there are a ton of venues from there within half an hour on the subway. Everything from small venues for a couple hundred people to Madison Square Garden.

We only have a few major venues, but many venues for <1000 people.
We have the stadium which holds about 50-60k people. Not many bands can play there, I've only been there for AC/DC. An awful venue for music though, and I fucking hate it.
Then there's the arena that holds about 15-20k people. That's where most big bands will play, especially now that the slightly smaller venue has closed (which sucks because it was the only large venue that didn't sound like complete ass).
There are a couple of inbetween venues that hold 4-6k people, but bands rarely play those. One of them I've only ever seen DT at, and the other one I've seen DT and Opeth.
Then there's a theatre that holds about 1500 people. A lot of smaller /older rock bands play there. Good venue, but trying to find a parking spot in those streets is borderline death.
Then below that it's all pubs/clubs/unis. I've been to a few of them for bands like Arch Enemy. I don't know how foreign bands can play those venues and even make a profit. They probably don't.

There's actually a pretty good venue out in the suburbs about two miles from my house, only problem is that very few acts I'm interested in ever perform there. I keep on hoping DT or else cool will book a show there. So far the only concert I've been to there is Slash w/ Myles Kennedy like four years ago.

I guess that's the problem when they have so many venues to choose from. Probably not the best location to hold the show.
That would be so convenient though. That's within walking distance. Hell, that's even within BLOB walking distance!

Yeah, being able to walk from my house to see Slash play was pretty awesome. Great show too, because Myles is awesome and Slash knows why people come out to see him so they played like half of Appetite for Destruction

Yeah, one or two of the tunes from the solo album he was touring behind weren't bad, but it was all about the GnR tunes. $40 for that walking distance show was way better than what it would have cost to see the actual GnR in a stadium this summer.

I'd like to see GNR, but they're playing at the stadium I hate, and the ticket prices are too much for my liking (but it's like that for many big shows now). All seats in the front half of the stadium are around $250, 175 for the back half, and $90 for a nosebleed. Front half of the floor is $350. Screw that.

Yeah, that's the problem with stadium shows, any seat worthwhile is going to be crazy expensive because only a big act is playing a stadium. My dad and I went to see Paul McCartney over the summer and, while I'm glad I did because it was something of a bucket list item, we were in the lower bowl seating directly across from the stage and if not for the screens it could have been any random guy on stage as far as my eyes were concerned

It cost $90 for decent seats for NXT, so I'm happy with that. They're first elevation, about 7th row I think? I prefer that to being floor at a wrestling show, because you're looking down at the ring.

That's a good call. I did fourth row floor level once, and while it was cool to be able to say I've done it I probably prefer the view about where you're sitting. Don't think I'd go floor level again unless I went all out and got ringside.

Ringside would be awesome, but otherwise I'd rather have the unobstructed view. Similar with a concert. If you don't plan to get really close to the stage, you're better off being seated.

I hope not. I had ear plugs in for that concert because it was just boomy noise, but it still didn't sound very good. I don't know if it sounded any better from the floor, as I was pretty far up in the nosebleed section. My favourite venue for sound was the Entertainment Centre, but that's gone now. Never had a bad sounding show there.

I had ringside seats for an ECW event at the Hammerstein Ballroom once before and it was such an amazing experience to see the wrestling that close.  I can still recall Rob Van Dam on the floor in front of me lifting his head up and just being covered in blood.  Also Billy Corrigan from the Smashing Pumpkins was there and smashed someone over the head with a guitar.  Boy do I miss those days of hardcore wrasslin.

I was up towards the top as well, so I wouldn't know.

Oh I still had fun too! I'm glad I got to see them, I just wish it had been in a better sounding venue. The stadium is designed for sportsball fans to watch dudes kicking a sportball around, not for appreciating music.

Big stadiums are not conducive to music though one exception.   Pink Floyd.  One of the best sounding concerts ever for me.

Yea stadiums and arenas are usually not the best sounding venues, but those are the only places that can host such popular bands.  Hopefully newer stadiums are being built with this in mind.

I'm not sure how much they can do. Dealing with the acoustics in a venue that size must be a nightmare.
Luckily not too many bands are big enough to play the stadium here though.
