Well, here it is.  First off, this OP is pretty long so I don't expect anyone to really read the bullshit about me and just skip to the bits that matter.  Firstly, I have been around here for so many years now and is one of my favourite places to spend my time.  It also warms my heart that some of you chaps inparticular have been anxiously waiting for this roulette.  That means a lot to me and I think the mutual respect shown between us is invaluable.  I have been tossing up with roulettes for a while, and never really was interested in doing one, but again, I feel I owe it to you boys, again a respect thing.  Saying that, as I've been thinking about it more and more, the more and more I've been getting excited about it.  Now with my work schedule for the summer season is finishing this coming Friday, it's the perfect time to discover some new music, and I know you guys won't disappoint.

Tastes

Most of you know my tastes and it's quite broad.  Those bands I just mentioned above were the core of what I have listened to.  Each one of those bands went through an obsession stage with me where I was absolutely hooked while discovering them and buying each one of their cd's.  So these classic metal bands is obviously where it's at for me, but my tastes did evolve.  From there, even though Helloween and Gamma Ray were already known, I discovered more power metal where Hammerfall, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Edguy, Dream Evil became popular with me.  I then later was going through a down period where a more angry and agressive style of music became popular with me.  Soilwork, In Flames, Children of Bodom and Trivium I thought were brilliant.  So, as you guys know, I like me some good screams from time to time.  I'm quite selective though when it comes to the more agressive music even though you guys probably wouldn't think so.  I then discovered everything in between, I needed to find metal of all kinds.  Evergrey, Kamelot, Iced Earth, Rush, Iron Savior, Gary Moore, Nocturnal Rites, Primal Fear, Pain of Salvation, Avantasia etc. you know these bands. I then went into a more softer melodic rock side of things.  This was when Frontiers was releasing quality, I was really getting into the AOR and melodic rock stuff, and basically whatever Magnus Karlsson was doing, he has became a staple and obsession also over the last few years.  These days I'm very selective and picky and something really needs to knock me over for me to warrant purchasing and diving deeper into it.

Bascially, you can see from my banned list below, my tastes are pretty broad.  Classic, heavy, melodic, prog metal is what I like the most, and anything of the kind.  Harsh vox are good, but not so much as extreme as the black metal stuff.  Melodic death metal is the way to go.  Thrash is good, but I like more melody over the agression most of the time.  AOR is good and anything modern and melodic.  I'm not looking for any sort of other genres.  I like some blues and a little jazz, but I'm running this roulette to find brand new great metal or the like, that's it.  There are a lot of bands on the banned list that I might only know one album of, but I want new stuff and am not allowing songs from other albums that I haven't heard.  If I own something from them, I have the ability to look further into them, and there is probably a reason why I might only own one album from them.  I don't really dig anything modern or mainstream over the last ten years either.

Other things to consider;

Be careful of anything obvious that aren't on the list.  I was never that big into the mainstream rock stuff, eg. Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, The Who etc. just as examples, so if it isn't there, it's fair game but be careful.  There's probably many obvious ones in my style that I might miss that I would enjoy, it's just a warning when it comes to the classic and obvious stuff.  Sending classic stuff is fine, but again might not score as well as it's possibly not what I'm looking for.

Format

12 players and six rounds.  Rounds will be scored out of ten and after six rounds, 4 will be eliminated, obviously the 4 lowest scorers.  From round 7-9 two will be eliminated until round 10 which will be the final.

I want to keep things pretty simple as it is my first roulette but want to add something extra also.  When we get to the top 8 I will be running a bonus feature in a head to head format.  I will use a standard sporting style fixture to come up with the matchups, but the overall score will still be the end result, but if you win your head to head battle, an extra point will be given to the winner of their head to head round.  I don't really know how this will work, and I might even change the prize when the finals series comes closer.  The bonus point system might need to be altered depending on the results going into the finals to give everyone a chance.  I may even deduct points from the loser of each head to head too to make things more interesting.  The Prelim finals I'm gonna steal Ruslans idea and have 2 songs submitted by the same band.  The final will come down to a head to head but scores will obviously be taken into consideration.  I will most likely do an EP style thing that again, I'm copying from Ruslan as well as a few others.  I thought these were great ideas.  More info to follow.  So;

Round 1 - 6 - Open rounds.  Try and keep songs under 20 minutes, but if you want to send something longer just once, I'll all for it.  All 12 participants will parttake in the first 6 rounds.

Bottom then 4 eliminated.

Finals

Round 7 (Round 1 Finals) - Open - Max song length - 20 minutes (8 participants) (with bonus points available)
Round 8 (Semi Finals) - Open - Max song length - 15 minutes (6 participants) (with bonus points available)
Round 9 (Prelim Finals) - Open - Max song length - 10 minutes (4 participants) (with bonus points available)
Round 10 (Grand Final) - Open - EP round - Info to follow (2 participants)

*Again, the final series is under construction and may be altered when the time comes.*

Submitting

I'm not gonna be picky with how I get my submissions.  My preferred way would be an actual file so I can burn it to the car, but if you want to send me a youtube link or something, I can usually find a copy of the song.  If something you send you know will be hard to get, a copy of the song would be better.  Either send me a PM with the song or you can email me at kadejordan@hotmail.com

Timeframe

I won't be listening to any submissions until I get every single one to make things fair on the others.  When the round starts, if you could get your song to me by 24 hours or so that would be great.  I will take just a few days to listen and will post results in a timely fashion.  I should be able to get through the songs pretty well and keep things moving.

Let the games begin.

Ya'll are playing for second place bitches.

P.S.  Guess I should read the OP.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

P.S.  Guess I should read the OP.

Even though it's long, it's not that important.  :lol

I'll just add this here;

Scoring System

Appeal of style - Everyone can see from my list on my preferred styles.  This will be a mark out of 10, where shouldn't really be a great variety in scores unless something goes really wrong.  A 1-4 would be someone sending me Celine Dion or Toby Keith.  5-6 would be something out of my style but had elements I would find interesting enough.  7-10 would obviously be bands that are like on my list.

Instrumentation and vox - Being a guitarist, this is one area I look at closely.  This is a general score of the appeal of the music, it's execution and style of vox.  What I think of the vox would probably have a big part of the score and of course the ability and musicianship also.

Songwriting and structure - This basically means if it holds my interest.  The length, how each section flows and the score would be affected if some sections worked better than others, or if sections were repeated too much, or sections or the song itself overstaying its welcome.  Melodies may come into it.

Replay value - Does this song get stuck in my head?  Do I want to go back and listen to this song again or check out more from the band?  I think this is a big thing.  Does this song have enough depth, chops and the songwriting to make me want to play it again?  Melodies obviously would have a big part of this.

Would I purchase the album based on the song - This has become a big thing over the last couple of year.  I use to buy everything and anything I could get my hands on, but as you get older times change and priorities change.  So these days, I'm pretty picky and have resorted to online listening before purchasing.  I still purchase a bit but nothing like I use to.   So that's something I want to rate on.  1-3 means I wouldn't bother wasting money on it, 4-6 would probably mean it's not on my radar but if I saw it in the clearance bin, I'd give it a go. 7-9 would mean I would probably put it on the list and purchase it.  A 7 would mean if I saw it instore I'd pick it up, whereas a 9 would probably have me ordering it.  A 10 would mean I have already ordered the album before posting.

That gives a score out of 50, where then I can divide by 5 and get a score out of ten.  So scores, could go betwee the full and half marks.  for example;

Style - 7
Instrumentation and vox - 8
Songwriting and Structure - 6.5
Replay value - 7
Would I purchase - 7

35.5/50 which equates to 7.1/10.

Finals and bonus system

Alright, I'm changing things up right here, right now.  There's a new twist in this game.

We are heading into the last round before the final series, and for a few of you, unfortunately it look inevitable that you are on the chopping block.  There have been a lot of bands I have never heard of been submitted, more than what I thought.  It seems you guys are finding good holes to fill in my discography and even though it's tough for some, I've been super impressed so far.

There are however, a few bands I thought would have been submitted by now.  I don't know if people are saving them for the finals or whatever, but I'm spicing things up now.

This little bonus feature will only last for the next 3 rounds.  So, that's round 6, then the first two final rounds 7 and 8.  I have put together a list of 10 bands, some of which I thought would have been submitted, others not so much, they might just be a band I've wanted to look into.  I will post really vague clues on to what these bands are later once I fully get it together.  If anyone knows what one of the bands might be and wishes to take a punt and send a song from them in one of these three rounds, I will confirm if they are one of the bands right away and you then have the option to send a second song from any artist you wish, or perhaps what you were originally going to send anyway.  I will then of course listen to both and your score will obviously be the higher out of the two songs, making your chances of a high score even higher.

So, it may seem unfair to the guys that look like they are out of contention, but I only am adding this now as I wanted 5 rounds of stuff from you, without looking for bands you might not normally send.  The point of the roulette's IMO is to send bands that YOU hold dear and want to share with someone else, not sending songs that you think I might like or artists that have been introduced from others.

So, this is also a little bonus for the contestants that are in finals contention to give them a boost for doing so well so far.  Once the top 4 hits for round 9, this feature is off.  It's an advantage for the first two weeks of finals too as you can potentially get 2 cracks at a bonus point over your opponent if you get one of the bands.  I've also changed the rules for round 9, where I want two songs from the same artist!  The final EP round will be 25-30 minutes in length with no restrictions on how many artists you use.  You just have 25-30 minutes.  So;

Round 5 - Normal proceedings
Round 6 - Normal proceedings - Open - Max song length 20 minutes (13 participants) (bonus band feature in play)

Round 7 (Round 1 Finals) - Open - Max song length - 20 minutes (8 participants) (Head to Head bonus point and bonus band feature in play)
Round 8 (Semi Finals) - Open - Max song length - 15 minutes (6 participants) (Head to Head bonus point and bonus band feature in play)
Round 9 (Prelim Finals) - Open - 2 songs from the same artist - Max song length - 10 minutes each (4 participants) (Head to Head Bonus point in play)
Round 10 (Grand Final) - Open - EP round - 25 - 30 minutes - However many artists you want (2 participants)

Bonus hidden song hints

1. A band thats discussed on DTF a little bit, well more than a little bit actually.

2. Band/s from Canada.  One member is in another popular band from Canada.  There is actually 2 bands this could be, and I'll accept either!

3. They have a cool name with two words in the title which has one of the words the same as a DTFer has in their name who actually are involved in this roulette, and this band wear makeup

4. Straight forward metal band with a Halford like singer from America

5. Swedish band formed in 1991, has been discussed briefly here before.  The guitarist is the driving force behind the band

6. Another band that gets discussed on DTF a little bit, actually more than a little bit

7. Popular swedish extreme metal band, not sure if I would like them or not, oh and did I say they were popular, cause they are, very.

8. Progressive metal band from Denmark, cool name with 2 words in the title and 6 albums

9. Three piece that released their debut last year, they are from America

10. Power metal from Finland.  Has 6 albums, formed in 1997, first album in 2001.

You sure?

Hmmm....... well, do you want to play?  If not, it's all good.

EDIT:  Sorry Dave, I was going by your post in teh roulette tracker thread, but I actually see now you were replying to splent, not me, so that's my mistake.  Again, if you are too busy, no problems, I can fill that spot.

Yeah I was probably going to join anyway, I wanted to check out the banned list before I made my decision so I never said anything. But I've already found a couple of holes in that list just thinking of stuff off the top of my head, so I'm in.

Hmmm....... well, do you want to play?  If not, it's all good.
Yeah I was probably going to join anyway, I wanted to check out the banned list before I made my decision so I never said anything. But I've already found a couple of holes in that list just thinking of stuff off the top of my head, so I'm in.

Yeah, I knew you'd be able to have some good stuff anyway.  As I said it was the thread I thought you were replying to me, but probably just assumed in my own head that you'd be in too. :lol

I was pretty unofficial with the invites too to be fair.   :lol

Well Chad has it won already , so I have given up  ;D  Or not  :hat

One thing I do need to do is get some mp3s onto a flash drive as I am on the road for 3 weeks starting this coming weekend and need to come up with enough material to take with me for Bolsters , Jay and this one  :lol

I will be in Brissie for 2 or 3 days too Kade -  might play you some samples and see what you like before submitting

Yeah, let's do this.

I'll be glad if I make it past the first six rounds to be honest. The list of participants is impressive as hell.

Will read the OP this evening.

Really dude?!?!?  Shit.  Was hoping that you hadn't checked them out.  I was also hoping to slip Empires of Eden past you, but that's off the table.  Those are the only two in my initial list of 30-ish that are now off the table.

Phew.

Also ... I'm gonna play nice.  Any bands that fellow participants have given me through Roulette's, I won't use.  However, RJ's list of shared bands is fair game - since a lot of my "discoveries" over the past few years are because of him.

Kade... how 'bout Spotify if I don't own the .mp3?

I have one of their albums and it's good.  They have been on my list to check out more, so that's why they are a no go.  Good to hear you still have 30 odd bands dude.

Yeah, spotify is fine Chad, I'll work with it.

If I get no response in about 24 hours of another participant, I'll just run with the 11.  It's just 3 will get the boot after round 6 instead of 4, no biggie.

I'm not going to play nice. I'm giving you guys one round to send some of your favourite bands and then every band is fair game.

I haven't looked at the banned list yet though.

You might not have one round to wait  :lol  Given how I got the boots in yours, I'm not so concerned that you'll be wanting to use my stuff.    ;) :-*

I'm sure I cock-blocked someone with mine, but I have a feeling I'm about to get cock-blocked myself this round, probably more than once. There's some tasty things not in this banned list dude, hope I get a chance to send some of them myself.

^ I really hope so, be careful with the black metal though

I considered this one for a brief moment at times, sometimes I see a lot of similarities between our music, but I imagine I would end up sending a lot of growls and that appears to be riskier than I thought. Def. following though, love following these things.

I'd probably be up for it if you'll have me, but it seems a bit unfair since I'm so late, just came back from work so I missed the thread :-\

Sent! I think Kade has grown soft over these years actually, all the AOR and melodic rock. 'Twas about time someone sent him some heavy / power metal.

Tim will certainly approve of this tune, used this one in his roulette. Come to think of it, I'm going to send the same song in Jason's too, because why the hell not, it's a great song.

Param and Train of Naught, I'll take both of you.  :hat

Makes the list 13 adn then 5 will get eliminated after 6 rounds.  A lot of songs to listen to, but I'm up for the challenge.

What do you both say?  In?

is there a spot still open bcuz if so i want it  :lol

Not really a big fan but saying that, I haven't really checked out any 'djent' bands.  Seems cool, but seems a style that doesn't really seem it would have me coming back to it much.

Be careful with black metal and straightforward death metal as I said.  I like growls, but definitely more in the melodic sense i.e. Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, Solution .45, In Flames etc.

No big rush for round 1 mate.  Won't be listening for a couple of days still for round 1.

You are actually right, I have gone a little soft and found myself drawn back to a heavier style of music lately.  Hence me listening to stuff like the new Anthrax and Metal Church and digging them, so my tatses seem to be shifting back.

I'll take the challenge :tup gotta collect some shit for the competition then, I usually send pretty quick but I have to make a selection of bands first and read the tastes section a bit more carefully, I think tomorrow will be more likely for me to send, that's gonna be like 15 hrs from now.

Have you checked out any of the songs sent in Evermind's roulette btw, need to know if some of it is still usable
