Improve your favorite live albums by changing the setlist
« on: April 10, 2016, 08:31:20 AM »
Thought of this as a fun little game yesterday when I was driving half across the country and was listening to Coma Divine by Porcupine Tree. It's my favorite live album by them, and I enjoy it a lot, but I thought about the idea of what if the setlist was just slightly different. Maybe it could even be better?

The only two rules as I see it would be: 1. Only songs available at the point the live album was recorded (makes sense) and perhaps a bit more nit picky, but 2. If you're gonna throw a new song in, you gotta take a song out. No cheating and just adding another 5 songs to an already great album. :P

I'll give my example first, and post the tracklist to Coma Divine by Porcupine Tree: (Changes I would make are in bold)

1. Bornlivedie (Intro)
2. Signify
3. Waiting Phase 1
4. Waiting Phase 2
5. The Sky Moves Sideways
6. Dislocated Day (Stars Die)
7. The Sleep of No Dreaming
8. Moonloop
9. Up the Downstair (Burning Sky)
10. The Moon Touches Your Shoulder
11. Always Never
15. Is Not
16. Radioactive Toy
17. Not Beautiful Anymore (Dark Matter)

I would:
Switch out Not Beautiful Anymore for Dark Matter
Switch out Dislocated Day for Stars Die
And as much as I like it, I might change Up the Downstair for Burning Sky since I think the latter is just slightly better.

Your turn!

That's one of the few live albums I will still listen to on occasion, so it is fine as is by me, but I guess it is kind of strange that Dark Matter isn't on it considering that was taken from the Signify tour.

I'm with you that I think it's pretty much perfect, but again, the fun of the "game" is to make it even better! :P

Any of you see the Rome setlists from which Coma Divine is culled? If they're legit on Setlist.fm, there's a whole other (amazing) disc worth – V34 1&2, Dark Matters, Sever, even the much-sought Cryogenics.

If I'd replace anything on it, it'd just be DM for IS...NOT. The rest is just too great.

I really like Is Not. Probably the best part of TSMS Part 2.

I wouldn't change a thing about that album either.  Enough so that I'd say change the set list for Alive II and make it the same as Alive.

Oh it was a joke that i'd remove all the songs. :lol

That album is rumoured to be more of a studio effort anyways.

I should've posted mine in green.  I figured that was what you were saying.

And while there was a lot of work done in the studio, I still love it.  It's one of those pivotal albums that got me to where I am today, in many respects.

Hmmm, if I were to replace songs from my favorite live albums?

In the case of Alter Bridge, as much as we AB fans gripe about songs like Before Tomorrow Comes and Brand New Start sticking around in their live sets even though they have plenty of new songs that could fit their sets, that set in Live From Amsterdam was really a strong set for its time (and they only have two albums to work with).  However, if it was me, I would have probably replaced Before Tomorrow Comes for One By One or Down to My Last or Wayward One.

For Rush, the thing is Rush really switches their sets a lot in their live albums to the point where it is a matter of what haven't they played live that we want in the 2000s.  I guess the only thing maybe would be to replace that small solo spot that Alex Lifeson had before playing Halo Effect in the Clockwork Angels Tour for BU2B2.
