There are some funny moments but they're definitely trying too hard in a lot of places. This would have been fun as a 5 minute gag video but stretched out to 30 minutes there are long sections that aren't very funny at all.

With this kind of movie, I'm not sure what "trying too hard" really means.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Trying  too hard to be "cool" instead of just an eighties pastiche.

I don't get that feeling at all.

It's about excess (which was certainly typical of the 80's).

I think someone is trying too hard to find issues to complain about.

I think you're trying too hard to be correct.

You're succeeding, but you probably could have put like 10% effort into it.

It's hard to explain but parts of the movie felt legitimately "haha this is stupid because this could have been a 80s movie", like the idea of Adolf Hitler being a Kung Fu master, and the protagonist having to travel back in time to stop him. That is so dumb, but also something I could totally see a movie about. But then they throw in him going too far back in time, and it gets to that "trying a bit too hard" IMO.

Yes quite. It goes beyond 80s pastiche and into " dinosaurs with lasers and thor fighting hitler " over the top . It's like they thought people would like it because of how "freakin cool" it was rather than

an actually great 80s pastiche.

People like it because it succeeded at both.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

That's fine but other opinions are available.

Plus i'm not just posting in a thread about something I hate to say it sucks. I did enjoy it but thought it was trying a bit too hard in places.

It's an understatement to say this movie is "over the top" and "to much" because it's sooo "over the top" it's ridiculous which is the whole point of the movie, to be "over the top" and ridiculous.  :lol

You can be over the top and silly but still seem like you're trying too hard.

Over-the-top doesn't have to mean funny though. Some of it is funny and some of it is less funny, it's all in the execution. There are some scenes like the two swedish comedians talking about their moustaches (I think it is) which is just painfully cringeworthy to sit through, and I agree with Kotowboy on the dinosaurs being one of those elements that doesn't work for me. But everything involving the protagonist (which is the director right?) is mostly great because he has that deadpan Steven Seagal impression going for him. Some of the best scenes are him with a straight face and that raspy voice saying things like "I gotta travel back in time to stop Adolf Hitler" in the most serious tone ever.

I guess for me what works are the serious/straight face deliveries of silly ideas, and what doesn't work so good are the silly deliveries of silly ideas.

This. The whole film reeks of the writer saying, "OK, what next outrageous thing can we throw on screen?"  That is the point of the movie.  It's not just an 80's pastiche, it's just a movie about excess - how much can we get away with putting in this thing?  And since that is the obvious intent, I don't see how "trying too hard" makes any sense.

But whatever.
