Most Astonishing riff
« on: February 24, 2016, 12:10:56 PM »
What are your favourite riffs on the album?

My top 3, currently, would have to be:

My Last Farewell - 2:51
Ravenskill - 2:22
Heaven's Cove - 2:37

Ravenskill - 2:22

This!  Absolutely my favorite riff on the album.  I wish it went on longer or was reprised somewhere else.  But I guess the fact that it leaves me wanting more is a good thing, right?

Ravenskill - 2:22
This one's the obvious choice, apart from that one I'd say The Walking Shadow - 1:04

The Our New World riff is indeed very uplifting. Like the About to Crash (Reprise) riff.

Aside from that, my favorites are also the Ravenskill and The Path that Divides riffs. Not really just because the riffs by themselves are cool, but also because in the context of the songs, they were perfectly placed.

The Ravenskill one and A Better Life are instant "air drumming" cues for me.
Also, the beginning of A Savior In The Square is one that I instantly wanted to figure out for myself on guitar. Maybe because it sounded easy..  :)

Ravenskill, Our new world, The Path that divides, The Gift of music are just some that come to mind. The album is filled to the brim with incredible riffs.

2:22 in Ravenskill is one of the most "fun" moments on the entire record. Every time I hear it kick it I just get a huge smile on my face.  ;D

I love the riffing starting at about 0:45 in Three Days, which introduces the vocal melody and then continues to aligns perfectly. Lord Nafaryus also has a lot of riffing that compliment the theatrical feeling of that song perfectly.

The most badass riff for me is definitely that one in My Last Farewell. And the A New Beginning intro always gets my hyped.

That riff from The Walking Shadow is fucking evil  :metal
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

- Our New World / Savior in the Square (yes, the acoustic variant is also a riff ;))
- Heaven's Cove, intro and verse
- Three Days verse
- Lord Nafaryus ("I've heard the whispering of revolution...")
Always too soon, always too late, always in between.

- Heaven's Cove, intro and verse

This is a great catch. It's interesting because at first, I found myself wishing that they played the electric version of it more than just the one time in Dystopian Overture, but now that I think about it, I actually like that it only happens once. In general, I love how The Astonishing doesn't repeat every single great idea. The fact we only hear certain things once, like the electric Heaven's Cove melody or the insane "Ravenskill" riff, makes them more powerful to me.

Moment of Betrayal outro riff along with the 'Meet me tonight....' part after the second verse.

Also Ravenskill, Heaven's Cove and TPTD verse riff.

My last farewell at 2:52.  Sick riff.  Great groove and that distorted organ patch of JR.  Actually, I love that whole instrumental section from 2:36 - 3:20 - one of my favorite minutes of the record.

This isn't a very riffy album. Our New World is fun though.
