I blew my perfect song for that theme on this preliminary round.. But I do have some more cool shit that fits the bill if I even make it that far.

With the violin theme: Does it count if the violin is part of a symphony, or does it need to be a solo instrument?

And does it have to be a main instrument throughout the song or can it just be a single section?

Oh, and in relation to the theme of the round........um, why?

OK, I gotta take a different approach to this shit if I'm ever gonna win another roulette. Seems my old standards are running dry, and with 500 artists in my library, I know I got some surprises hidden, just got to dig a bit. So....for this roulette I will try to send bands I've never sent before. Now, off to see what I got hidden.......

Looking forward to this. Back in your first roulette, I sent a lot of things that didn't make much sense for your tastes. This time I'm going to be much more focused, even if not as varied.

That's pretty much what Brent's roulette forced me to do, and it paid off and I surprised myself with the amount of gems I was able to come up with.

Oh, and in relation to the theme of the round........um, why?

I can't answer to all posts right now since I'm at work and it's annoying to type huge messages on my phone, but regarding this:

It can be either part of the symphony or a solo instrument - I prefer the latter. It can be in the whole song or a single section. Good example of what I want is Another Day by DT or Your Latest Trick by Dire Straits. But I don't want to be too restrictive with this theme, so anything will do. The only requirement it should be an actual instrument, and not, say, orchestral samples played on keyboard.

As to why, well, I wanted to have one difficult theme just like I did in previous roulette, and I like those instruments, so what the hell. However,  invited participants can find some salvation in the .doc file I linked in the PM with the invitation.

Glad to have you all aboard guys. I'll answer all questions when I get back from work. Great to see some trash talk up already. :P

:lol

Edited the second post. We've got ten contestants already, so it's definitely going to be two preliminary rounds. This shouldn't hold the things up much because there are only 8 main rounds, so 10 rounds overall seems reasonable.

Now, with such a competition in the qualifiers I recommend you guys to send some really great songs. 10 people for four spots, just "good" may turn out to be not enough.

So how's it going down? Like, the best 1 or 2 songs are in and the others still have to do another round to qualify? Or does it depend entirely on the songs (in which case, if 4 songs are THAT much better than the others what will you do?)

I like the preliminary round idea thing, but really, that's a massive disadvantage for as already locked in.  A lot of bands going to get cock blocked before we even start.  Good challenge really, I don't mind, just an observation.

I doubt I will cockblock a lot to be honest, but yeah, I see what you mean. That said, it's just as much a disadvantage to the people in the qualifiers.

Yeah, once round 1 commences, everyone's in the same boat I guess, just a few extra bands off the list.

Same for me, but I actually think it's more of a disadvantage for people in the qualifiers. Everyone has their "own" top roulette songs, and the people in the qualifiers basically have to send 2 songs out of these in order to even make the competition. For the others, there's still a chance they'll get cockblocked, but it's just a possibility, not guaranteed.

Speaking of that, I have no idea how I get such the high scores from you in the Championship Roulette. We are so not a match.

I don't think we're that far apart, actually. My tastes just seem to be a bit broader than yours, but there's actually a lot of overlap between you favourite bands and mine. Nightwish, Kamelot, Dream Theater, Steven Wilson, Pink Floyd... all bands that used to be my favourite bands during some parts of my life. I just chose not to delve too far into those genres and tried out something different instead. But it's not like I don't enjoy a good Power Metal / Prog Rock / Hard Rock song.

I think the intived players have the cockblocking advantage, because they can actually send something for preliminary rounds too. For example, if Kade is sure Tim is going to send Winger,  he can send it here just for the sake of blocking him. Granted, it's a dick move, but it's a valid strategy.

About how prelims will go, I can't say until I've heard the songs. In the unlikely turn of events that four songs will be great and the others will majorly suck, yes, it's possible second round won't be needed. I doubt it'll happen though.

I don't think I'd be putting much money on that one.  :rollin

I don't see any advantage of myself sending a song in these prelims at all really to be honest.

You can block someone's favourite artist (if I like the song enough) you wouldn't ever send in the main round.

I was just looking at songs to send and that banned artists list will screw me up big-time. If I even make it past the prelims, this roulette will be interesting for sure.

Alright, alright..

I just made a playlist of possible bands/artists to send and I do indeed have quite a lot. I better make it through the qualifiers first though, so this will probably be a gamble: send a strong song right now, or keep my stronger songs for the actual roulette and hope the other prelim people screw up?

Present and accounted for.

I always get a chuckle when people think they don't have much to chose from.  Unless one only has 100 or less artists, surely there are 10-15 songs in anyone's library that could appeal to any organizer??  Might be easy for me to say, since I've got 1500 or so artists in my iTunes library alone, and another couple hundred saved on Spotify.

And yes, my list was 56 deep before I even saw the banned list.  Had to scratch 4-5 off once the banned list was published - and that doesn't even include what I have on Spotify.  I'll save those bands for Kade.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

Oh man, with two preliminary rounds I definitely fear for my to-send list. Last time I was cockblocked twice  :sadpanda:

This time I'll make sure I have several options open for each round though, instead of having to go back to the drawing board because of people with good taste.
