This, except that the gap between Leviathan and Blood mountain is pretty big, and the gap between BM and Remission is even bigger

Okay I see a lot of people saying that they like the newer stuff, but going backwards in the discography, they are not too keen on it.

As the only album I own is Leviathan, which I absolutely adore, how much different from this sound is the newer material. I know from reading around, they got more progressive, but did they move completely away from their Metal roots

I think Crack the Skye is pretty damn metal.

I was listening to The Last Baron and I think I love the vocals on that song  :blush(Vocals are my main problem with mastodon, but the vocals fit the song)
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

They're certainly heavy, but that's where the agreements end. A lot of bands have heavy riffs, doesn't stop them from sucking (Just ask Pantera :p ).

Wow, that's a pretty solid top 5.  I'm shocked that someone else appreciates Sleeping Giant as much as me.  I consider it one of the most ingenious songs I have ever heard.  I mean seriously, how the fuck did they come up with that song?  It's BRILLIANT.

Crack the Skye got me into Mastodon.  Blood Mountain made me a bit iffy, but Sleeping Giant, Wolf, and Colony were the songs that told me to keep trying.  So I did.  But Sleeping Giant is still amazing.

Damn, I want this album. I listened to a bit of it on my friend's iPod back when it came out, and I've been dying to get it since.

I might buy it along with a physical copy of Tool's Lateralus with my first paycheck. ;D

I had gotten this album some time before seeing them open up for Metallica back in March. It didn't really click with me... until I saw them live! Fucking amazing album!!

I decided to just post on this thread rather then start a new one.

I'v been listening the the Crack The Skye album. I like it a lot. I'v heard of them a lot before, but don't know much about them. It sounds like there are 2 vocalists in the band. I'v heard Mastodon referred to as stuff like 'the new Metallica' and the future of metal.

This made me wonder, what style of metal is Mastodon? I know subgenre grouping is annoying, but it's done, and done a lot. They seem to mostly have elements of Thrash and Speed metal. What would you say Mastodon is?

I recently just listened to this album properly, while mowing the lawns, and I must say, it is absolutely stellar.  Notepad, I've always considered them Sludge Metal, but I don't even know if thats a thing :lol

I've always considered sludge to be a more metal version of grunge. I don't know if that's even remotely accurate, though. :lol

I never hear the term Sludge Metal. Sounds like it would mean Grunge. The genre known as Grunge doesn't sound like what I image when I hear the term Grunge.

Mastodon clearly has elements of a lot of different styles.

Grunge and sludge are clearly two different styles, I just feel like they have some elements in common. Sludge, or at least the way I've always defined it (which may or may not be right, I don't really know a whole lot about the exact definition), is heavy, aggressive, somewhat "messy" riffs, harsh vocals, but not full on growls, and generally not a whole lot of solos and stuff.

I've always seen sludge metal described as metal mixed with heavy elements of punk music.  But, as with all subgenres of metal, this becomes a rather useless description under any degree of scrutiny.
