I believe it was home I saw some months back pimping Syd Barrett, so I assume that album's his too.

FIRST ELIMINATION
« Reply #1242 on: April 02, 2016, 07:39:51 PM »
Ok folks, this is it: the Finals results. It's been quite a journey, hasn't it? Both frustrating and funny, but I don't regret having 15 players - each of you has shown me some great stuff, some more than others. I won't do another roulette in the next two years with all this music and some discoveries I'll make on my own. All in all, thanks for playing and being patient for results!

Now, to what you've been waiting for. I wanted to add some suspense so I'll only reveal each player's result in ascending order, one per post, so that means...

home - The Effervescing EP

1. Nothing More - Christ Copyright
This sounds like some generic alternative metal with djent and some electronics, nothing remarkable imo. Basically this - didn't find anything worth mentioning about this song, sorry. 2.5/5

2. Karnivool - Eidolon
So you wanted me to like this band? Well, to be honest, these roulette songs have convinced me they aren't for me. I mean, I enjoy these tracks, but I don't feel the urge to listen to any more of this band. I can't exactly pin out why, but their style ain't my cuppa tea. 3/5

3. Karnivool - Alpha Omega (Ghost City Sessions)
I swear this one flows so well from the previous one I thought they were a single track at first lol. Basically the same as the other, only a bit better. I enjoy how this song gets heavier at times tho. +3/5

4. Wrongkong - Radiohits for Idiots (Ghost City Sessions)
Ok this is a pretty unusual song, and a different track from the others. Starts a bit odd with those old organ sounds, but then build ups on atmosphere, adding layers of pads and guitars, resulting into something similar to 90s Porcupine Tree. And I quite enjoy it - great outro. 4/5

5. Philip Glass - Etude No.6 (played by Maki Namekawa)
Yup, another great piano piece. I think Nekov sent me the Opening of Glassworks, and although I enojy that recording, didn't prompt me to explore him further. Maybe this will chage it, for it's quite a great piece, despite being short and repetitive. 4/5

6. Syd Barrett - Octopus
I guess I can see why you love this stuff, but it's probably not for me. It's a matter of melodies - I don't dig them at all. Dunno if they sound "dated", but those chord progressions... do nothing to me. I wished I know more music theory so I explain myself better. So the song... is ok I guess? I struggled to tell the difference between this and the following two. 3/5

7. Syd Barrett - Effervescing Elephant
Certainly a goofy, short track, that didn't do anything for me. 2.5/5

8. Syd Barrett - Golden Hair
Mmmnnn... no. Really, dunno what to say about such short song, other than what I said about the other Barret ones. Meh. 2.5/5

Overall
Quite inconsistent EP, with some great tracks, a few good ones, and several duds. Maybe fitting 8 songs on it wasn't the best choice, for the flow suffers, and the transitions between some tunes are awkward. While not catastrophic, some tinkering would have improved this aspect a lot.

EP Average = 12.38/20
Flow = 3/5
RP = 1

Score
= 16.38

Final thoughts
You basically started rocking the roulette and then went downhill, only to return triumphant and secure a spot in the finals. And now last place on it lol. A bummmer, really, since you had sent me some awesome music before. Well, at least I have some new albums to spin! Thanks for playing!

Damn, 8 songs.

I've never listened to Syd Barrett's solo albums, but Piper at the Gates of Dawn is my favourite Floyd album and it's basically all him. Even most of the songs on that aren't brilliant as stand-alone tracks though, it's the kind of album where all the pieces come together to make a really neat whole.

I have a friend who has Piper at the Gates of Dawn and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea both very high in his favourites, and when he told me that, I suddenly clicked how similar those albums are despite being completely different. Both are very experimental sprawling whimsical albums evoking childhood with a lot of trippy imagery and such.

If I was going for a 1.5/5 from the music I actually like, I'd probably go with Bob Dylan - I Shall Be Free No. 10.

Elite - Tsilyalp s'Sacul

1. Valravn - Krummi
Yes, YES. This is pretty haunting on atmosphere, like a tribal version of bjork, but with better music ;) . I really dig the anger on her voice, and the epic ending. It could have done with a few more instrumental sections tho, for it's mostly sung. Sadly, your EP goes downhill after this, but excellent song! 4.5/5

2. Mr Bungle - The Air-Conditioned Nightmare
While I appreciate the mix of genres and styles here... I just don't dig this, really. I mean, while it's enjoyable, I find no strong connection between this and me. A friend even told me I shouldn't start listening to Mr Bungle through this track lol. I guess I'm just gonna prefer Faith No More :P +3/5

3. Agent Fresco - See Hell
I recall you sending me this artist in the previous roulette, and haven't checked that album, their debut, many times lel. So to the song, I'll be quick: I liked it, but didn't find it any special. No memorable melodies, nor standouts moments. Just a nice track. 3/5

4. The Fall of Troy - Chapter IV: Enter the Black Demon
Reminds me of post-hardcore? Mathcore? Something similar. Dunno if "generic" would be fair for this, but it mostly doesn't appeal to me. I don't connect with it in any sense - melodies don't grab me, the guitar playing is just ok, boring use of harsh vocals in the chorus, the calmer bits bored me, etc. Nice drumming tho. 2.5/5

5. Deafheaven - Come Back
Just... no. I don't dig black metal at all, and this is no exception - I just don't connect with most of the genre in any way, neither emotionally nor musically. The only bits I enjoy are the last ones, for they are acoustic and atmospheric, but nothing special in the end. This was a chore to get through, sorry. +2/5

Overall
After such great beginning, it's amazing how the other tracks pale to it. Despite that, it actually has a very good flow, and the transitions between different styles don't feel forced at all. Nice EP name btw.

EP average = 12.4/20
Flow = 4/5
RP = 1.25

Score = 17.65

Final thoughts
With a pretty good, consistent output and just a few duds, you did pretty well on this roulette, but your EP really disappointed me, mate - I guess our tastes are just quite different. Oh well. Thanks for playing and showing me some great stuff!

Lol, every subsequent track had a lower score :lol

Next time, I'll fill an EP of Valravn-like stuff.
By the way, I heavily disagree on See Hell not having any memorable melodies, that's just bullshit, but alright, you probably didn't like it as much as I did.

On the last two tracks, I really wanted you to like both, because I thought you would appreciate them with enough listens. Especially the Deafheaven track could be really rewarding.

Thanks for having me and hosting this roulette. I think I did quite well in the end ;)
