Sacul's controversial roulette v2. UNNECESSARY EPILOGUE
« on: January 10, 2016, 05:46:40 PM »
So... hi. It's been a bit more than a year since my last roulette, and it's time for more controversy :P

So I've been running a list with my favorite albums, but this one turned up before than expected - the roulette will officially start when the list is over, which should be in a few days. My tastes have changed since v1, and expanded a bit, yet I feel there's much to explore left, so I hope you folks help me fill some pretty big, obvious holes in my musical library (think of most of classic prog or rock/metal bands from the 60s to the 80s). Trying to explain my current tastes wouldn't be enough with just a list of 50 albums, therefore I've written a few pages of text trying to make sense of what I like or not. Will get to it later though, for I want to explain some fundamental part of this roulette, and the most delicate, but also the one likely to turn off some people - just read all first, please.

You may have noticed in my sig, besides the nice quotes, there's a link that says "The To-Listen List Project". Well, long story short, it's a little pet project I started first with the intention of having a list with all the albums I wanted to check out (a proto version of it can be found on my first roulette), but kept expanding it with lots of classic albums I needed to check out, and some that looked interesting. Thing is... this list is too fucking long, that I even had to put it as an online spreadsheet file. It has, as of date, a total of 1877 records, spanning most of the musical genres in existence. Yes, even power metal, country, grindcore, hip-hop, electropop, and the like  :lol  My goal here is to give every kind of music a fair chance, so don't be afraid to send whatever you want!

So I started listening to some random albums from it, and while there where lots of meh stuff, found some gold. A few even ended up in my top 50. But... there are still a fucking lot of them. No, I won't delete any. But thought... doing another roulette would fill me with, like 50 new albums or more, not counting those already included in the list. You can now see where this is going, right? But wait, before you go, let me explain exactly how this will go - I've given much thought as to how to handle this, trying to find a balance between the players and their choices, and my own sanity.

So, now...

Rules
  • A max of 15 players.
  • 10 rounds with no theme, one final EP round with top 5 players.
  • Scoring out of 5, and in case I need quarter of a point, a plus (+) will be added.
  • No bonus points for whatever arbitrary reason.
  • My scoring will be a bit harsh, but not as much as some other hosts ;)
  • Submissions for rounds shall be sent within 48 hours after results are posted - you'll be PM'd in case you don't send in the required time.
  • You must send, excluding the final round, at least 5 songs belonging to albums on the list (that aren't scored a 3.5 out of 5 or more - that means they're banned, and the artist too). Of course you can send songs from the list in all the rounds, but sending more than the required will not get you extra points, but a thank you from me.
  • You can send songs from the list in any of the 10 rounds.
  • The preferred way of sending songs is Spotify links. If your entry is not there, or you don't have Spotify, then YT links. Neither? Email me the file in a MEGA link.
  • PLEASE, when you send a song, let me know if it belongs to an album on the list or not - that way I can keep track of your list-only submissions.
  • Length limit: 10 mins, and up 30 extra seconds, but no more unless specified.
Useful links:Don't worry about the list, I've been adding most of DTF's favs, some of your typical submissions on roulettes, and even Coldplay and Winger :lol

Banned artists
As a rule of thumb, any artist with a rating of 3.5 or more in the list or on SputnikMusic, is banned. If it has a rating of 3 or below, you can send it, but NOT from the album that has such rating in the list. For example, you can send me a Coheed and Cambria song that doesn’t belong to Afterman: Ascension, but not one from that album.

It goes without saying, but the following list contains completely banned artists - the next one is more of a guide, as those bands are kinda allowed, yet not recommended (all in accordance to what was stated in the previous paragraph, ofc). All the songs I was sent in my previous roulette are banned too (you can find them at the end).

Happy zone (a.k.a. bands/artists I quite like - the ones I love are bolded)

Regarding roulette bans:
  • Every artist/band sent on the roulette whose song has received a 3.5 or more, is banned.
  • If, and only if such song received a lower score, then the band/artist can be submitted again, but only once, indifferent of the score it receives the second time.
  • Resubmissions can be from the same album or a different one, on the list or not.
  • In case you resubmit an artist/band from the same album, and such record is on the list, that entry will not be counted as one of the obligatory songs sent from the list.
  • Stating the obvious, but when a band/artist is banned, so are the albums by them on the list.

Can we send a song that is from a band on the list, but not the album stated, if we think a different album is better, or there is a song on a different album that is a better intro to the band?

Can we send a live version of a song from an album on the list?

If either if those is a no, it shouldn’t be a problem anyway, I think I saw enough stuff I know and like on the list that I could potentially try to stick to it for all ten rounds, just to help you hammer away at the list.  :lol

I'm probably doing just 5 of the list just because I have so much of my own stuff to send you, but there's some awesome albums on that list that I would send either way so we'll see.

That explains it, what a shame, for a second I thought you had developed good taste   :tdwn

Is it likely you don't know any of the songs on an album on the list if it has no rating yet? I mean, it would seem logical, but then you have these albums that I would not believe you don't know a single song from.

Well, if it is a pretty well-known song, it's probable. In any case, send it and if I'm familiar with it, I'll ask to resend and give ya my thought on that tune :P

I'd normally wait until I finish my top 50, but since you don't seem to have any strategy, yeah, go ahead.

Pelagial has missed the RNG bid thus far so I haven't gotten around to giving it a ton of listens yet (it's not in the set i just started today either) but i'll get around to it eventually

anyways there's only like 11 albums on the entire list i'd really want to send songs off of and i'm only gonna pick 5 (there was one artist i was surprised to see but you picked the wrong album so i'm sending them off the album i'm actually familiar with)

By the way, as a fellow insane listmaker, I can take one look at that list and tell you why it's overwhelming you: it's just one massive fucking list. You need to break it up, categorise the artists according to genre or something like that, to make it more manageable. That way, when you say to yourself, "I wanna check out some hip-hop", you don't have to sift through 1800 albums.

I don't expect to do well at all, but I think I've got a couple of things that may appeal to you. Having to send five things from your giant list will probably screw me but I don't have a shot of winning anyway so it won't matter. Joining for the fun of it and to see if I am capable of sending even one song that you don't hate (fingers crossed). :lol

Count me in.

Well, I think at this point is not possible without ending up in the psychiatrist :lol

I don't really check music based on my mood, so I just organize what I'll listen to in a weekly basis, and check those albums. I may ask a few friends to recommend me stuff from the list from time to time, but that's about it. I may encounter lots of crap, yeah, but I've found this has opened my tastes a lot.

Btw folks, all songs from albums on the list will make me check those records even if I thought your tunes sucked. Just so you know :P

:lol
That's how I approached your roulette  :rollin

There's a fair amount of hard rock and heavy metal on the list, it's just a matter of choosing wisely ;)

my goal is to send you:
5 artists on the list nobody else is very likely to send (i feel like 4 of the 5 are very unlikely to be sent by anyone else, with the 5th not very likely either)
5 artists that i've discovered through my personal searching this last year and that i doubt anyone else has heard of through any source other than myself

basically i'm gonna find you the good stuff
i'm also going to be sending mostly really heavy stuff apparently  :lol

is there any limit on track length btw? one of the albums i'm gonna send off of, the shortest song is almost 12 minutes and it's my least favorite anyways  :lol

I'm already seeing some electronic stuff on this list that I know, and I'm only up to C. If this trend continues I might be able to avoid sending rock and metal genres - I'm not too sure I could pick out stuff from those that would appeal to you to be honest. I've got some electronica and some dj0nt, I'm going to lead with that.

I'd say don't go for more than 10 mins unless it's really worth it. With 15 people participating, I want to finish this quick :lol

Added that rule to the OP.

Then how am I supposed to send Devil Doll - The Girl Who Was.. Death?
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Yeah do that. I've got a 14-minute song here and chances are it might be the only thing I send that you like.

inb4 I send it and you hate it

There's very, very little stuff I actually dislike and hate with passion (a bit of that explained in the My tastes link), so chances are you'd just get a 2.5/5 at worst, meaning I found it "meh"  :P .

Sent. I'm gonna burn through all 5 list picks for my first 5 rounds to give me more time to figure out what to send for the other 5 where I have more freedom  :lol
