Mike Portnoy was in the stadium when the Orioles beat the Yankees last Friday. Perhaps this is a good thing for the O's!

That's redundant.

I think the Red Sox exhaled when they made the playoffs and the Big Papa tributes has caused the team to lose focus.  I hope the playoffs change that.

I hope not.

I must admit, with JD on 2nd with no outs, I thought it was over for you.

Funny story. We saw the Jays a few years ago. They were announcing the lineups..Encarnacion, Bautista, and a couple more....and my 10 YO turns to me and says, "They don't sound Canadian, they sound Spanish.".

11th. This ends now! If you can't score with 1 out and a runner on 3rd you have no business being in the post season

Hell of a game....complete team loss for the O's. No way I put that all on Ubaldo.

Happy with the Orioles season in all. Hopefully they build on it.

Showalter is being skinned alive for not using Britton. Seems he was going with the out-moded approach of saving him for a save.

The game was still tied in the 8th, 9th and 10th though, so it wouldn't have made a difference anyway since both teams were playing shut out ball. It's not like Buck would've let Britton roll for 3 or 4 innings either. Non issue, in my opinion.

This is faulty logic.  Saying that he shouldn't have used Britton at the time because it wound up that the game went scoreless is hindsight bias and not a valid argument.  Regardless, Britton did not get into the game in extras in favor of Noobaldo fucking Jiminez.

It's ALL hindsight bias. If Ubaldo doesn't lose the game, if the Orioles manage a hit, let alone a run after the 6th, if Bourne catches that ball near the right field line, this is all moot.

Britton pitching the 11th over Jimenez was the right call... no doubt it. Best bullpen pitcher in the league instead of a sporadic starter. But Buck's good calls during his time in Baltimore FAR outweigh his bad calls.

From Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun"

For a postseason story that's yet to run, I asked Britton on Sept. 24 what would be his proverbial Oscar-reel -- if he wanted someone to see the highlights of his season ahead of the Cy Young voting, what would he pick?

https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/blog/bal-for-zach-britton-proudest-moment-in-perfect-season-was-same-one-orioles-didn-t-use-him-in-20161004-story.html

Britton mentioned a few saves in Boston -- a five-out save on June 14, plus his Sept. 13 and Sept. 14 saves at Fenway Park -- but singled out another as his proudest.

“One of the outings I was probably the most proud of was in Toronto," Britton said. "I think I did two innings in that extra-inning game that we had there that day. We got beat twice there, and it kind of was a big win for us, taking one of those games. It wasn’t even a save, it was more just an outing where getting two innings against that team right there, and maybe three or four innings later, we ended up winning. It was one of the ones I was most proud of.”
******

Ubaldo's last seven starts:  47 IP, 15 ER.  He was the Orioles' most reliable starter over the final five weeks.  He should never have been near the mound after the 6th inning.  He is not a relief pitcher.

Britton should have come out for the 11th.  The 12th if necessary.  And then...Tommy Hunter and/or Bundy and/or....

At that point, if you lose, you gave it your best, and then you blame the anemic offense.

One of the top five managerial blunders I have seen in the postseason.   As a Tiger fan, and Marylander who follows the O's, I like Buck.  He has been a miracle worker for the franchise.  I can't figure out how they made it to the postseason with the lack of starting pitching and zero bench, but that was a colossal brain fart.

So unlike Buck.... Collins marches out his stud closer in the 9th inning of a 0-0 ballgame. Closer gives up a 3 run home run.

Damned if you do... damned if you don't.

This is a big question mark for the Sox now. Kimbrell has been horrific in non save situations. Night and day from actual save situations.

I was actually questioning why Britton didn't come in for the 8th with Bautista and Encarnacion up. Brach did a great job there. But he has to pitch Britton there in the 11th.

I was hoping Collins could've gotten one more inning out of Syndergaard. He was looking like he was tiring a bit, but still had enough to get through another one, especially when his spot in the batting order ended up not coming up in the bottom of the 7th.

Both starters last night were ridiculous.
