Steve Morse Appreciation Thread

The recent Flying Colors record and the (commendably well done) "Odyssey" cover Dream Theater did back in 2009 have got me thinking that (strangely) an alarmingly high number of DT fans has never paid much attention to Steve's wide body of work (many people seem to know very little about him and his music). I always thought that was kind of odd/unsettling considering he was once with Kansas (which is a well-liked and revered band amongst prog fans). Plus, there's no denying that the Dregs' (Steve's original rock meets fusion meets funk meets baroque classical music meets bluegrass/country ensemble and the one that is closest to his heart) music has all the right ingredients that appeal to a DT fan. Heck, DT themselves have sung their praises numerous times in the past (particularly JP who has cited Morse as his favorite guitar player on many, many occasions) and the band even recorded a mean rendition (well, partial rendition... but still!) of "Cruise Control" on the "A Change Of Seasons" EP.

Not a big Kansas fan but I love the Flying Colors album and the Dregs stuff. What If is a great album.

The two records ("Power" and "In The Spirit Of Things") Steve did with them are kind of an acquired taste and are also often overlooked (even amongst die-hard Kansas fans). They're okay but most absolutely pale in comparison with the band's heyday output.

"What If" is excellent (and features my absolute favorite Dregs/Morse tune, "Night Meets Light") but my favorite Dregs record is actually "Dregs Of The Earth" (T Lavitz' debut with the band). It embodies everything the band stood for musically (electronic chamber music, as Steve aptly described the music back then) and is a veritable sonic feast for any given fusion freak.

Power is the only Kansas album that I like.
I used to buy alot of the American guitar mags in the early 80 (Guitar World, Guitar For the Practicing Musician) and he was always in there with everyone saying how great he was. It was years before I heard anything by him- Tumeni Notes on a compilation- and when I did he was as good as everyone said.
Some of his stuff doesn't do anything for me but he can play.

Saw the Power Tour Steve was fantastic.  If you like Morse you need to get his solo album The Introduction.    Saw this band open up for Rush on the Power Windows tour and was blown away watching them play Cruise Missile.

I love the Dregs. Free Fall and What If are both 5 star albums. The Steve Morse Band also has some very good stuff.

I also dig the two Kansas albums with Morse, with Power being better.

Kind of amazes me that it tends to slip under a LOT of people's radar that Steve Morse has been the guitarist in Deep Purple for nearly twenty years, and for a longer time, I believe, than Ritchie Blackmore was their guitarist.  :lol

Yes, he has been with them since 1994 and was instrumental in getting them back on their feet music-wise. "Purpendicular" ranks as one of DP's best albums (and it's arguably one of their most diverse, genre-hopping records).

One of the things I love about the Dixie Dregs are the in-your-face country-flavored jams they put at least one of on every album. The Bash for instance is a lot of fun and a great show of skill. Also, I enjoy the band's use of violin. I'm a sucker for violin in a rock context.

I still need Dregs of the Earth. I've heard good things about it.

I have the 2 Kansas albums, Free Fall & What If by The Dixie Dregs, Flying Colors, Bananas by Deep Purple, and Structural Damage by The Steve Morse Band. I love them all except for In The Spirit of Things. I like half the album but most of the songs written with co-writers are pretty bad.

Wouldn't surpise me if I had 25 albums with Steve Morse playing on them.  I don't think I've got any with Purple though.

I've only ever seen him live when the Dregs opened for Dream Theater. I've seen Dave LaRue and his band more.

To me, "Dregs Of The Earth" is the quissential Dregs record. Everything's perfectly streamlined, the tunes are killer and (then newcomer) T Lavitz makes a splash with his highly energetic, jazz-influenced playing (particularly on "I'm Freaking Out" with its outlandish combination of jazzy and funky elements). I strongly recommend giving it a listen.

I saw him live twice with Deep Purple and during the last G3 tour and I must say I was really impressed with his ability. I find his style of playing very interesting as I think he can mix a couple of styles and come out iwth simething quite interesting. I have yet to listen to his solo band but the Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple and Flying Colors are all great and his work in those bands is very very good

That has always been his (most recognizable and praised) trademark. Steve has always been an extremely versatile player who built his style upon a number of different (and oftentimes disparate) musical influences. Plus, he has always been a great composer too (which always set him apart from the guitar virtuoso crowd to me).

I too saw him twice last year. Once with the SMB and another time with Flying Colors. Both shows were great and had me giggling like a little, wide-eyed schoolboy.

If you've never checked the Steve Morse Band (or his actual solo records), you owe it to yourself to listen to "High Tension Wires" as soon as possible. That's Steve Morse at his purest. And the songs themselves are just wonderfully written (and, of course, performed).
