Chaossystem's Favorite Musicians, Part 2: 30 Drummers Drumming
« on: December 16, 2015, 02:47:48 PM »
Again these are mostly my personal favorites, so there will probably be some controversy, both because of who got left out, and some of my choices that WERE included. But I'm ready to defend my choices, because I know that there will be people who won't think that some of them belong on a "best-of" list of drummers, and that I must be out of my mind for some of the ones that WEREN'T included.

1) Vinnie Appice-Black Sabbath, Dio, Heaven and Hell
2) Ginger Baker-Cream
3) Albert Bouchard-Blue Oyster Cult
4) Bill Bruford-Yes, Bruford, Earthworks, ABWH,etc.
5) Clive Burr-Iron Maiden
6) Jeff Campitelli-Joe Satriani
7) Phil Collins-Genesis
8) Stewart Copeland-The Police
9) John Densmore-The Doors
10) Graeme Edge-The Moody Blues
11) Phil Ehart-Kansas
12) Stuart Elliot-Alan Parsons Project
13) Dave Holland-Judas Priest
14) Mike Mangini-Dream Theater and many others
15) Nick Mason-Pink Floyd
16) Nicko McBrain-Iron Maiden
17) Keith Moon-The Who
18) Ian Paice-Deep Purple
19) Carl Palmer-ELP, Asia, etc.
20) Cozy Powell-Rainbow, ELP, etc.
21) Neil Peart-Rush
22) Mike Portnoy-Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, etc.
23) Scott Rockenfield-Queensryche
24) Phil Rudd-AC/DC
25) Chris Slade-AC/DC
26) Chester Thompson-Genesis
27) Lars Ulrich-Metallica
28) Bill Ward-Black Sabbath
29) Alan White-Yes
30) Simon Wright-AC/DC, Dio

Also want to give a strong honorable mention to:
Randy Castillo-Ozzy
John Panozzo-Styx
Ringo Starr-The Beatles, etc.

Chris Adler - Lamb of God would be my addition

For me Peart and Portnoy are my two faves.

For the current generation, Bobby Jarzombek and Chris Quiarte are both beasts.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

If drummers are doing their job well they rarely stand out to me - a bit like football umpires  :lol

Those that have managed to stand out in a good way:

Alex Van Halen
Mike Portnoy
Randy Castillo (RIP)
Aynsley Dunbar
Steve Smith
Scott Rockenfield
Jamie Borger
Mike Mangini
Marco Minnemann (although much of the music he is involved in doesn't do much for me)
Frankie Banali
Mark Zonder
Ed Warby
Virgil Donati
Darren Smith

While we're on the subject of Judas Priest (see CS other thread) I'm a huge fan of what Les Binks brought to the table for Stained Class and Killing Machine. I don't know if he'd make my list of the "greatest" but those two albums are fantastic for the drumming alone.

I like your list, CS. There are a few I'd replace. Terry Bozzio has to be on the list somewhere!  :)

I DID consider Terry Bozzio. I used to have the first BLS album. Good Stuff. But other than that and the first Explorer's Club disc, I don't know his work well enough to put him on my "best-of" list.

The reason I chose Dave Holland to represent Judas Priest is because I really like a lot of what he did in the 1980-'84 period, or from British Steel to DotF

Oh, well.

Not everyone hears everything in the same way.

I actually think that Nicko from Iron Maiden is somewhat overrated. But he has his moments

Which is ALSO the reason John Bonham didn't make my "cut." An overrated drummer from a VERY overrated BAND!

I don't know. John Bonham was pretty good, as is Nicko. I mean, I've honestly never heard anyone overrate Nicko. No one has ever called him the world's greatest drummer.

Holland would've been fine if he was in AC/DC, but one listen to Painkiller is all it should take to show what a weight he was on JP's music.

Folks need to listen to "The Wanton Song" more closely, me thinks.

When I first heard that song, I had no IDEA that it was Geddy singing...

I thought it was one of the Second City actresses, like maybe Andrea Martin...

Dave Holland was terrible and held Judas Priest back.

I disagree with that vehemently.   He came in and changed the sound for the better.   The "Holland" triumvirate (Point of Entry, Screaming..., and Defenders...) are head and shoulders above the rest of the catalogue for me (though I am also a huge fan of everything that came before as well; Sin After Sin is a great record).

I get that he is a pariah now, but I'm really really bummed that Iommi wiped his parts from the DEP Sessions with Hughes.  I would have loved a good copy of that (I've heard the boots).

My top three, and the three drummers I put on music to specifically listen to:

1. Mike Portnoy
2. Neal Peart
3. Phil Collins

Drummers I really dig:
- Matt Cameron
- John Bonham
- Ian Mosley
- Stewart Copeland
- Nicko McBrain
- Phil Rudd (sorry, AC/DC is NOT the same without him)
- Zack Starkey (he makes The Who the Who again)
- Ian Paice (no one does a drum roll like he does)
