The first Independence Day is probably Roland Emmerich's only decent all around movie.

I always actually liked Day After Tomorrow, so that's probably my favorite.

I think this movie is going to suck and I couldn't be more excited to see it.

I think that second statement is a bit of a straw man, but even if it were true, TFA was a good movie in its own right, regardless of the references. Most other Roland Emmerich movies haven't been good, so... We'll see when it comes out, but I'm not going to have high expectations.

I enjoyed that one more than Independence Day, which isn't saying much but it's still good.

I was wondering, since nobody mentioned the music in this film... Any fans of film music here, aside from the obvious?

Because I think that not going with the original composer David Arnold (who wrote a nonstop fun and heroic masterpiece) is possibly the biggest mistake Emmerich and Devlin could make for the sequel.

I always enjoy disaster films. I might need to get that checked out. It's also no more lame than Bill Pullman's speech in Independence Day.  :lol  After seeing that, I understood why my ex-wife thinks he's a terrible actor. Aragorn should have given that speech.

I think so too. I was very disappointed when I saw he wasn't doing it. I really enjoy the music in the first movie and was hoping for Arnold to come back to this one.

I'm more concerned about how they're going to convince me that we rebuilt society and an effective global military in just 20 years.

I don't remember one note of music from the original, and I've seen it a lot.  So I think this is relatively unimportant.

This. Outside of the main theme song, I don't really remember anything from it.

I like good film score music.  But it has to work as a film score, and not independently of the film.

The score for this film apparently didn't resonate with me at all.  It's not a feature of this film.  The effects, destruction, and barely-acceptable acting are what remain with me.

Loved the first movie.

I have no idea what this 2nd movie will be. The trailer is just a lot of visual noise. I'll see the movie just to see what in gods name is happening in half of those scenes of fire and boom and explosion and chaos. As of now it looks like a ship the size of the planet comes and is always on fire and crashes into earth.

Since I doubt that's actually what happens, I'm curious what is really happening.

The new trailer thing they released yesterday is pretty cool. My only gripe with this is that it's only 20 years in the future. Redesigning and building a 4 mile stretch of highway in CT is taking over a decade. I can't believe that after losing a massive chunk of the world's population, we were able to rebuild all of our communications and cities, create hybrid alien and human fighting machines, and built a space defense field all around the planet all in the span of 20 years. I get that they wanted to keep the original cast, but I feel like this movie really should have taken place at least 50 years in the future.

Other than some cool Goldblum moments, this looks pretty awful. I feel like the destruction is at such a huge level that I can't take it remotely seriously or find much entertaining about it. Another reason I'm not terribly excited about the new X-Men.

They can't defeat it with a virus this time. Gonna have to dock and install Windows Vista. Or OSX Mavericks.

:lol

I'm still on page one of this thread but I probably already saw all I already need to in order to respond. I loved the original, it's one of the only action films I actually enjoy. I still consider it one of the best movies to show someone who hasn't ever watched a movie on a big screen HD tv. I made my daughter watch it not too long ago because she's never seen it - I've only ever done that before with The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, and ET. This is number four "must see" movie for someone her age (13). When she gets a little older I will add Shawshank Redemption to that list.

As for the sequel, well Will Smith isn't in it which is fine considering what you all said about the money and especially the kid. This isn't baseball, and even THERE this crap didn't fly. And it's not like he just wanted to bring his kid on set every single day - he wanted the kid to get a role. A paid role. A STARRING role. forget that.

I haven't watched the trailer yet but based on all of this alone I will not write off the possibility of seeing this movie. It won't be in a theater though - I don't do theaters.

Caught the latest trailer (hadn't seen it yet) yesterday.

Agree completely... though I am excited about the new x-men.

Still, ID2 is something that is just total sci-fi porn/screen candy, and I might go and watch it in theater because of that.  Hell, I enjoyed Battleship for that exact reason, so I might entertain the idea of seeing this on the big screen.

I like the first one, as silly as it is. It's still fun.

Hopefully Jeff Goldblum and Not-Will-Smith have good chemistry.

I enjoyed it.

The first hour was great I thought. Nice long build up. It was only the very ending that felt a bit tacked on.

I'd give it a 6.5/10

Took my grandson to see it yesterday.  While it's about what I expected, and entertaining...it was really crazy far fetched.  I mean seriously....  A ship 1/3rd the size of the moon, just clamps on to the earth....... :lol

***SPOILERS***

I was disappointed in this movie. The original is one of my all time favorites, and I only enjoyed about 20 minutes of the movie (near the middle-end, when the Earth crew was inside the mothership on the ground). I had many problems with it, including not enjoying most of the new characters/actors (other than Thor's brother's friend, he was entertaining). I also did not like the fact that they re-cast Mae Whitman for someone "who is hotter." Although Maika Monroe is very attractive, I would have rather the same actress play the president's daughter considering they got almost all of the rest of the original cast to be in it. And I happen to really like Mae Whitman. The first hour was way too boring, I thought, and the false ending was pretty terrible considering President Whitmore sacrifices himself for nothing. Yeah, so color me disappointed. Best parts about the movie were the aforementioned friend of the main pilot, Goldblum, and Judd Hirsch. Spiner was pretty good, but he shouldn't have been in the movie anyway (re-writing history, as they say... the dude definitely died in the first one).

Another thing I didn't like was that it wasn't realistic, which was why the first one was so good. I watch the first one and get goosebumps, because it feels like I'm watching something that COULD actually happen. If a HUGE alien craft comes down to Earth, lands on close to half of the surface, and then proceeds to drill in the Atlantic Ocean and gets ONE MINUTE away from the EARTH'S CORE, we're all fucking dead. I don't care how quickly you can kill the queen alien at that point. There's no coming back from it.

Other than all that, though, it was great. :\
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

Went last night to kill time while the power was out at our house. Perfectly harmless way to spend 2 hours, but definitely inferior to the original.  The destruction was hilariously over the top.
