Favorite Moment from Each band member
« on: December 05, 2015, 12:46:07 PM »
My first thread--I hope I can contribute something cool. What I want to know is what your favorite moments are from each member of the band past or present. It can be a riff, a melody, a rhythm--whatever your favorite thing that any given member has done in Dream theater. I'll give my list for examples:

JLB: Slow part in Scarred, from "do you feel you don't know me anymore?" to "30 years say we're in this together..."
Myung: that noodly little riff he pulls in the bridge on Blind faith. Right after the "take your time and look around..." lyric. I know it's little, but, man, that part is really incredible.
Rudess: Synth Solo in Octavarium. Hands down.
Mangini: The drum part right in illumination theory right before the "to really feel the joy in life..." lyric. His whole lead up right there might be one of my favorite moments in DT's catalogue.
Petrucci: Definitely the hardest one to pick. I think I have to go with the main riff in ITNOG. Really incredible.
Portnoy: Probably the drum part in the intro/first verse of Trial of Tears. Definitely my favorite part of his.
Moore: SDV
Sherinian: IDK. He was in the band for such a short period of time, and the album that he had the most influence on (FII) I am not a big fan of, so I really don't think I can pick one from him.

What do you guys think? What's your favorite moment from every member of DT?

Okay here's mine ;D

JLB: His whole performance in Blind Faith - really great performance there!
Myung: The bass solo In Metropolis Pt. 1 – first time I ever listened to that I was like “wooooaah”
Rudess: Have to agree with you there, nothing beats that Octavarium solo for me!
Mangini: That drum solo in Enigma Machine!
Petrucci: His solo on Goodnight Kiss, may not be his most flashy but is always the most emotional, at least for me!
Portnoy: The whole performance in The Dance of Eternity – amazing stuff!!!
Moore: This might be a shocker, but that keyboard solo in Light Fuse and Get Away. always loved that!!!
Sherinian: His Keyboard Solo in the middle of A Change of Seasons

***Bonus*** Charlie Dominici: I am the killing Haaaaaaand!!! :lol

JLB: Watch the sparrow falling. Give new meaning to it all. If not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day.
JP: Peruvian Skies Solo
JR: Bridges in the Sky solo
MM: The long drum fill that leads into Live, Die, Kill in Illumination Theory
JMX: Bass riffs during the instrumental section of In the Name of God
MP: Hell's Kitchen
KM: ?
DS: ?
CD: ?

I'll have to think about it a bit more because they each have multiple great parts.

JLB: Hard to choose, probably the TCOT acoustic ending, 2nd choice would be In the Name of God or Metropolis. Though RoeDent made a good point with Another World aswell.

JP: BAI solo, or Illumination Theory (basically everything in this song, from riffs to solo's)

JR: Ragtime-solo in TDOE, Constant Motion + Honor Thy Father solo's

JMX: Metropolis solo/Octavarium interlude to Medicate.

MM: Illumination Theory intro (whole first chapter)

MP: Constant Motion instrumental section.

KM: Space-Dye Vest, not just the creating of it but his performance on it aswell.

DS: Didn't think too much of the FII keyboards, probably the LitS solo aswell
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Haha, CD is kind of like Sherinian for me except worse. I actually liked some stuff the band did with Derek (obviously ACOS, TOT, TAMP), but I'm really not into WDADU at all. So I couldn't really come up with one for CD

Great choices. All of Myung's bass solos are pretty intense. The metropolis one is probably my favorite among his solos as well. I love Blind faith, too. I think that's a really underrated song that JLB doesn't get enough credit for.

JLB: The completely unnecessary added live vocal part in The Killing Hand here.

MM: The part in the intro of On The Backs of Angels were his mirrors Jordan's keyboard part with splash hits while following the guitar rhythm with snare and kick parts.

JR: piano in Solitary Shell during the instrumental section

JP: when he improvises the acoustic-sounding guitar part in Solitary Shell, usually right during my aforementioned favorite JR moment.

JMX: Metropolis bass solo

Poor Charlie is getting left out quite a bit here. :lol :lol

Dominici: "Even when plans fall to pieces..." in Only a Matter of Time
Petrucci: Voices solo (and about 100 other riffs and solos :lol)
Portnoy: drum fills around the 4-minute mark or so in Metropolis (first section or two of the instrumental section)
Moore: outro of Scarred (best ending to the best DT song)
Myung: fretless work in Through Her Eyes
LaBrie: Take the Time ('nuff said)
Sherinian - intro to Lines in the Sand
Rudess: Home solo
Mangini: post-orchestra section of Illumination Theory

JP:  too hard to pick, there's a million of them.  but maybe the Razor's Edge solo (when the beginning of the theme comes in), also maybe the playing under the final verse of Lines in the Sand (under "and the mysteries we nurture" and the lines around that)

JMX:  the dropout in the end instrumental of Peruvian Skies

MP:  pretty much any cool part on Awake or FII, Hells Kitchen stands out I guess

JLB: geez, probably the moments from I&W people have already mentioned.

JR: yeah the piano in Solitary Shell is good, Honor Thy Father solo as well.

KM: the manic stuff in The Mirror

DS:  little flourish before that last verse in LitS

MM:  honestly nothing comes to mind.  if I had to pick, maybe killing the bass at the very end of Bridges in the Sky.

James: Impossible to choose. Off the top of my head...the ending scream of Intervals on Score.
JP: TBOT solo
JM: It's a super small thing, but the bass fill in the quiet section of ITPOE, right after "Angels fall, all for you, heretic..." is so perfect. The Metropolis solo is right behind it.
JR: This one is tough. A lot of candidates, but the first BTL solo is one I always remember as a big moment. Most of his piano, continuum and Zen Riffer moments are contenders here.
MP: Finally Free ending, LSFNY
MM: The big fill down the kit in TSF on BTFW, leading into the Repentance section
Sherinian: Good piano work in Anna Lee, I guess?
Moore: The last keyboard solo in LTL
Dominici: Chorus of Afterlife, I suppose.
Collins: The gift we bring Your Majesty, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

JLB - Learning to live F#5
JP - Voices solo, but there is so much good stuff
JMX - Lifting shadows of a dream intro
JR - Octavarium
MP - Dance of Eternity and this dance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHgDLsSY5-Y
MM - Illumination theory, porno fills
KM - SDV  :hefdaddy  :hefdaddy
DS - ACOS
CD - Well, Afterlife
It seems that they're entering an area of extreme hazard. A zone of some sort. A dangerous one.

I couldn't pick just one for each band member, so I think I'll do each one separately. I also can't believe some of the ones that were missed.

Starting with Charlie:

Yes, I dare to include him!
I know a lot of people would probably say something like "his best vocal contribution to WDaDU is on YtseJam!"
But I thought he sounded fine.

He was a little-or maybe even a LOT-weak on AFiL and The Killing Hand, and I thought James did a MUCH better job on the later versions of both of those songs, but Charlie sounded good on the rest of the debut songs that he DID sing.
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...

Yeah I was mainly just joking about my Charlie pick . . . I actually am fond of his work and think he's a good vocalist (minus a few parts) :)

It's okay. Not everybody gets everybody's jokes. I actually thought it was funny when ProgSnob said that Charlie's best moment was "leaving!"

I think when Portnoy said they were "starting to feel the limitations of Charlie's voice" he was mostly talking about his LIVE performances. James is/was a big improvement in that area. But Dominici still sounded pretty good on the record.

First of all, my favourite DT moment of all time: ITPOE pt 2, The Reckoning part. Did we have a thread on best DT moment in general?

JLB - Under a Glass Moon first verse and chorus
JP - A Change of Seasons solo in Another World
JR - Octavarium keyboard solo (beginning of Full Circle)
JM - not sure
MP - whole Systematic Chaos
MM - maybe the polyrhythm in Illumination Theory (somewhere in the first few minutes, before JLB enters the first time, two measures, 25/16 and 23/16 over 6/16)
DS - A Change of Seasons solo around 18 min
KM - Metropolis pt. 1 solos

JLB: Surrounded, specially the outro in the Live in Tokyo version. Emotional when needed, powerful when needed. Amazing.
Myung: Panic Attack intro.
Rudess: About to Crash intro. Not really long, but it shows everything you need to know about JR.
Mangini: Fills on Illumination Theory
Petrucci: Now this is a hard one. The guy has several moments per album! I'd go with Hollow Years solo in Live at Budokan.
Portnoy: Honor Thy Father in general, specially the verses.
Moore: Space-Dye Vest
Sherinian: Intro of Lines in the Sand
Dominici: Only a Matter of Time
